Chapter 82: Her Regret

(Damon's POV)

The moment the door groaned open, my head snapped toward it, my brows knitting as I saw her standing there—Cara.

I hadn't expected her to show up here. Not after all of this. Not after I had made it so clear that I had picked Sophia.

But there she was, standing in my doorway, eyes dark and inscrutable, lips twisted into a small, knowing smile. A dangerous smile.

I stood up, pushing away from my desk where I had sat with my mind off in space. "What are you doing here?" My voice was sharper than I intended, but I didn't care.

Cara took a slow step forward, her hips angling ever so slightly, her eyes locked on mine. There was something unnerving about the way she walked—like an animal stalking its victim.

"I came to see you," she said simply, her tone as smooth as honey.

I clamped my jaw. "You shouldn't have come here, Cara. You know why."

She let out a soft laugh, tilting her head and smiling. "Why? Because of Sophia?"

My heart ached to hear Sophia's

Chapter Eighty-One: A Dangerous Game Cara's POV The air was heavy with heat and the scent of sweat. My body still vibrated, my skin warm from Damon's touch. I lay next to him, feeling his heartbeat return to normal as he stared at the ceiling. He had been silent for some time now, and I knew why. He was thinking about Sophia. That name made my stomach curl with anger. I hated her. I resented how she had Damon's heart, how he looked at her with so much love and adoration. But tonight, I changed that. Tonight, Damon was mine. I rolled onto my side, resting my head on my hand as I looked at him. His jaw was clenched, his lips folded into a thin line. I could see the guilt fighting inside of him. Too bad for him—I wasn't going to let him regret this. I leaned in and traced my fingers over his chest, my caress soft, taunting. "Promise me something, Damon," I breathed low. His gaze snapped to mine, dark and unfathomable. "What?" I smiled sweetly. "On the day of the mating ceremony,

The night was charged with happiness, the celebratory cheer already present in the air.I smiled to myself, quietly. How ridiculous she was.Sophia had truly believed she would be Luna, his own. She had been switching dresses, trying on the one that would be perfect for her, having her gown altered while she dreamed about the moment when Damon would exclaim her name. She knew nothing.Damon had pledged to me.It didn't matter that everyone in the whole pack was convinced Sophia was his mate. It didn't matter that everyone was there for her. When the moment came, Damon would use my name instead. And I would proceed smiling on my lips, watching Sophia's universe disintegrate.I could already picture the look on her face—the confusion, the shock, the pain of humiliation.Would she weep? Chapter Eighty Five: The Calm (Cara's POV)The dim light of a candle cast long shadows on the walls of my room. I brushed my hair in front of my mirror, my lips curved into a slow smile. It was mating ceremony night.A night Sophia believed was hers. How naive.I grasped for a silver chain, tracing the delicate string with my fingers. It was little, but it would have to do. My gown, the one I would wear when Damon said my name and not hers, folded neatly on my bed. It was nowhere as fancy as Sophia's—no one expected that I would need one. But I had arranged things for myself, quietly, in the darkness.Sophia had spent days selecting her dress, staring into the mirror, dreaming about tonight. She actually believed she'd be Luna. But I was aware of better.I softly hummed, getting up and running my hands over my dress. The music was blaring with the beat of footsteps and the laughter of people as Sophia, Liam, and Vanessa finished their last touches to walk away. It was less elegant than Sophia's or Vanessa's, but it was neat. I didn't anticipate overshadowing them—I just wanted to be there.Deep within me, I believed that I would get to go. That even though I wasn't one of them, that even though I wasn't Luna's favorite, that somehow I would still get this chance.I was wrong."You're not going."Luna's voice was cutting, unrelenting, leaving no space for argument. For a moment, I believed I had misheard. I had spent so much time preparing for this moment, making sure everything was just right. But none of that mattered now.I needed to see Damon.I bit my lip, my eyes scanning the room for him. My heart beat fast, my hands were cold, and my stomach was tight with nervousness. This was it.The evening Damon would come and get me.I had waited that long. I had dreamt of this. Imagined it, how it would come about. I understood there were impediments—Sophia, the elders, expectations of the pack—but that all didn't count. For he vowed it to me.Damon had told me that I was the one. He had told me that no matter what would come, he would never release me. I held on to those words as if they were the only thing that could make me breathe. So why was I so scared?I swallowed hard, taking it in. The great hall was festively dressed, with red and silver banners hanging overhead, and golden candlelight shining off of the gleaming floors. Wolves made quiet excited exchanges back and forth, the excitement apparent in their gentle spoken words.I tried to stay calm. I didn't need to go crazy.
