I whirl around. “What? You want to lecture me again?”

Rowan steps closer. His strides are calm, deliberate, like he’s walking through battlefields with no fear of getting burned. I hate that about him. I hate how calm he always is while I’m cracking at the edges.

“I didn’t come to lecture you.”

“No? Then what is this? Another round? You didn’t beat me hard enough?”

His jaw clenches. “You needed to be reminded of what's at stake.”

“Oh, right. Because I’m so weak. Because I don’t have a wolf. I forgot I needed you to put me in my place.”

“You needed to fight harder.”

“And you need to stop treating me like I’m glass,” I snap.

I turn, about to walk away again, but he’s faster. His hand catches my wrist, spinning me back into him. I stumble, and before I can find my footing, my back hits a tree trunk. His palm lands against the tree beside my head. The other hand comes to rest gently, but firmly, at my throat.

I freeze.

“Get out of my way,” I whisper.

“No.”

His eyes are locked on mine.

VENUSHe smirks and walks ahead, stepping into the other room. Against my better judgment, I follow. The waiting room is modest, a soft couch and a few chairs near a low table. Behind one of the couches is a shelf filled with several books. Nile walks over to a cabinet and begins preparing something in silence. The scent of herbs floats in the air. “You’re really making tea?” I ask warily.“Unless you prefer to keep pacing like your ass is on fire.”I realize that I have been just doing that. So I sit on the couch in front of the shelf. The tension in my chest still coils like a spring, but my fingers twitch with nerves. He brings over a steaming blue mug and sits across from me. “The herbs are from my homeland pack. Only grow in high-altitude forests.”I sip it. A strange taste floods my tongue, earthy, minty and oddly calming. “This is… good.” I compliment it, the tea reminding me of Grandma Maria. She always makes dishes or drinks that have a calming effect. He nods. “It helps

VENUSI shoot to my feet. What… the hell?My hands tremble slightly as I reread the words. The air feels tight around me now, too quiet, too still. I rush to lock the door, check the windows, then scan the hallway from the peephole. No one’s there.I try calling the number, but it’s already disconnected. Is this a prank? But who’ll dare to prank me like this? Why would this person even text me to leave? My eyes grow wide as realization hits me. My jaw clenches as I grip my phone tightly. There’s only one person I know who wants me to leave this camp.I storm through the hallways of the packhouse towards Rowan’s office, my fists clenched and my heart thudding loudly in my chest. I shouldn’t be doing this. I should be thinking rationally, but after that message, after everything, I can’t keep calm. I can’t shake the feeling that he sent it, that after failing to talk me into leaving, he’s now resorted to threats. If he thinks I’ll be scared into running, he doesn't know me at all.

VENUSI frown. “Then stop them.”“I can’t.” His voice breaks on the edge of frustration. “Not when Mallory’s always backing them up. She’s in every meeting now. She’s... aligning with them. I’m outnumbered.”My chest tightens.“And that’s my problem, how?” I ask, sharper than intended. “You’re the one who invited Mallory into those meetings. You let her in.”He winces because of the harshness in my words, then exhales. “I know. And maybe that was a mistake. But she’s contributing a lot to the camp right now. She’s got allies. She’s resourceful. If I remove her, things in the pack might crumble.”“So you’re saying you can’t say no to her?” I ask, a bitter note curling around my words. This does not feel like him. He doesn't answer right away. His gaze falls to the floor. “I’m saying... I don’t know who I am in those rooms without you anymore.”The words hit me like a cold wind. Then he reaches for my hand.I get tense. His fingers brush mine gently, tentatively, like he’s afraid I’ll

VENUSI slam the door behind me and lean against it, pressing the heel of my hand to my chest. My heart is still pounding, not from the fight. Not even from his hand around my throat. From how close his mouth got to mine. From how much I wanted him to close that distance. But he didn’t.Why did I want more from him? It's so wrong to feel that. I exhale shakily and push myself away from the door. My room feels colder than usual, like it knows I’m spiraling.Goddess. I was so quick to snap at him.I throw myself onto the bed, burying my face into the pillow. Rowan didn’t accuse me of anything. He never said I was Bronze’s mistress. He just asked a question. He even said he noticed I looked distressed. And I, like a damn idiot, lashed out, thinking the worst of him. Thinking that he’s the same as Trent. Just like I always do when someone brings up that kind of thing. I experienced something like this before. People blaming me and ganging up against me for a false accusation. The memo

VENUSHe doesn’t look at me. “I need space to push you properly. You’ll be using your full strength today.”I bite back a bitter laugh. “What strength?”He turns to face me at last, expression unreadable. “That’s what we’re going to find out.”I cross my arms, pulse already racing. “Why are you doing this?”“To train you.”“No. I mean this.” I motion between us. “You could’ve paired me with anyone. You didn’t have to do this yourself.”His eyes lock on mine, quiet and cold.“I don’t trust anyone else to handle it right.”I open my mouth to argue, but the words catch in my throat.Handle it right? Or handle me?“Let’s start,” he says, already circling.I fall into stance, knees bent, fists up. My whole body is tense, not from fear, okay, maybe a little, but from the storm of questions in my chest. His actions don’t make sense to me. He makes the first move, a quick jab toward my shoulder. I dodge, just barely, but not fast enough. His fingers graze me, and it’s enough to throw me off
