The first scream tore out of her before she could swallow it.

Elara doubled over, fingers clawing into the stone floor as pain ripped through her lower body, sharp and unforgiving. The room spun, torchlight smearing into fire-bright streaks as another wave followed fast, harder than the last.

“No,” she gasped. “Not yet.”

Her body did not listen.

The ache she had carried for months shifted suddenly, violently, into something final. Something that would not wait for permission or comfort or help.
