Chapter 5: The Final Breaking

Mirael’s POV:

“Vesper?” Riven dropped his blade completely. It clattered on the ground near my knees. “You are alive.”

The woman with cold eyes stepped closer. Her silver-streaked hair matched the moonlight. She looked at Riven like she had never left. “I survived the attack your family caused Blackthorn. I came back for what belongs to me.”

I stayed on my knees in the blood-soaked dirt. Pain pulsed through my body from the loss earlier tonight. “This can’t be real. Five years of you haunting us and now you stand here alive.”

Vesper laughed softly. “Haunting you? I was surviving while you played house in my position Mirael Lockwood.”

Elias protectively closer to me. “Vesper Kane. I knew your family had ties to the Blackthorns. This changes nothing. Mirael is coming with us.”

Riven ignored everyone else. He walked straight to Vesper. “I mourned you. I rejected Mirael because of your memory.”

Vesper touched his arm. “I know. I heard the rejection tonight. Beautiful work. She bled for it literally.”

Liora clapped her hands. “Perfect. Now the real Luna returns. Mirael can crawl away finally.”

I pushed myself up slowly. My voice came out raw. “You all planned this? The rejection. The public shame. My child dead because of it.”

Riven glanced back at me. “The child was never part of the plan. But it happened.”

Elias helped steady me. “Mirael your mother protected you from this exact web. The Blackthorns and Kanes have been allied against our bloodline for years.”

Vesper turned her cold gaze on me. “Bloodline? Please. You are a weak substitute. I was meant to stand beside Riven. Not you.”

I clutched the letter tighter. “Then why did he marry me? Why five years of hell if you were alive?”

Riven answered before Vesper could. “Politics. The elders forced the alliance after they thought Vesper died. I never wanted you Mirael. I never loved you.”

Those words hit fresh. I staggered. “I know that. I lived it every single day. The cold bed. The public dismissals. The way you looked at Liora while I waited at home.”

Liora smirked. “And now the real queen is back. The pack will celebrate.”

One of the older warriors who had always been kind spoke up. “This is wrong Alpha. She lost a child tonight. Show some mercy.”

Riven turned on him. “Mercy? She brought rogues and lies to our border. She hid her bloodline.”

Elias growled. “The bloodline you feared. The power that could challenge your control.”

Vesper walked over to me. She looked me up and down. “Look at you. Bleeding. Broken. Still clinging to him even now. Pathetic.”

I met her eyes. “I clung because I had nothing else. No family. No real place. Only the hope that one day he might see me.”

Riven stepped between us. “Enough. Vesper you will stay. Mirael you leave at sunrise as planned.”

Elias refused. “She leaves with us now. She needs healing.”

The fighting started again. Rogues against pack warriors. Vesper shifted into a sleek grey wolf and joined Riven’s side. They fought together like they had never been apart. I watched from the sidelines held by two betas.

One beta whispered “I’m sorry about the baby Mirael. This is too cruel.”

I nodded weakly. “Just let me go. I want to disappear.”

Elias broke through and reached me again. “Mirael read the letter. It has the truth.”

I opened it with shaking fingers. The words blurred through tears. My mother wrote about the arranged marriage as protection. About my true father Elias. About the power that awakened in Lockwood women after loss. After pain.

The letter said the child I lost would have been the key. But I could still awaken it. Through more pain.

I read the last line out loud. “When they break you completely Mirael, the wolf will rise.”

Riven appeared suddenly. He snatched the letter and read it. His face changed. “Power? You hid this from me?”

I laughed through the tears. “Would it have mattered? You hated me anyway.”

Vesper shifted back to human form. She stood beside Riven. “She is dangerous now. Kill her before she becomes a threat.”

Liora agreed loudly. “Yes. End this tonight.” Elias roared. “Touch her and die.”

The pain inside me peaked. I screamed as my wolf surged forward stronger than ever. Heat spread through my body. The bleeding slowed. Something shifted deep inside.

Riven stared at me. “Mirael what is happening?”

I looked at him one last time. All the love I had wasted. All the nights I cried alone. All the public humiliations. “I loved you Riven Blackthorn. Even when you destroyed me.”

Vesper raised a blade. “Then die loving him.”

Elias lunged to protect me. Warriors clashed. I felt my wolf fully awaken. Power flooded me. But the blood loss was too much. The world tilted.

As I fell, I heard Riven shout my name for the first time with something like fear. “Mirael!” Darkness took me. The last thing I saw was Vesper smiling and Liora laughing.

When I woke, I was in a moving cart. Elias sat beside me. “We got you out Mirael. But the pack is coming for us. Riven is leading them. He wants you back now that he knows about the power.”

I tried to sit up. “He rejected me. He does not get to change his mind.”

Elias shook his head. “He is not the only one. Vesper wants you dead. And there is more. The child you lost. Its death awakened something bigger. Hunters from the human world are coming too. They sensed the power shift.”

I touched my empty stomach. Fresh tears fell. “I have nothing left.”

Elias took my hand. “You have family now. And power. But Riven Blackthorn is chasing us with his full force. He swears he will drag you back to the Eclipse Pack even if he has to chain you.”

The cart hit a bump. Pain flared. In the distance I heard howls. Riven’s howl. Elias looked back. “He’s close. And he sounds desperate.”

I whispered the words that broke me completely. “After everything he still thinks he owns me.”

The cart suddenly stopped. Warriors surrounded us. Riven stepped forward from the trees. His eyes locked on mine. “You are not leaving Mirael.”

Vesper stood beside him with a triumphant smile. “Time to come home substitute. Or die here.
