Audrey’s POV

Logan barely let go of me after that.

Even while checking the house again, he kept glancing back at me like he was afraid I would disappear if he looked away for too long.

I sat curled on the couch with a blanket wrapped around me while Nia slept against my chest again, thankfully unaware of how bad things truly were.

My whole body hurt, my throat burned every time I swallowed and the image of that masked man kept replaying in my head over and over again. Logan returned from upstai

Logan’s POVI really wished John had never made that call. For a long moment after I ended it, neither Audrey nor I spoke. She was just staring at me. She was waiting, looking confused and anxious. I hated that I was the reason for it."What DNA results?" she asked again.I rubbed a hand over my face. My head was pounding. John had promised he wouldn't push things this far without speaking to me first.Apparently, he had changed his mind, or perhaps he had become too desperate to wait."Logan,” Audrey called. Her voice was softer now. She was looking more worried. I looked at her.I prayed within me that God would help me, ‘cause, I didn't know what to say, because none of this belonged to me.It wasn't my secret, it wasn't my revelation, and yet I was standing in the middle of it."I need to talk to John first," I finally said and her expression immediately fell."Why?" She asked. The answers ran through my mind…Because he thinks you might be his granddaughter, because he secretly ra

Audrey’s POVI stared at Logan. For a moment, I genuinely thought I had misheard him."My birth certificate?" I asked and Logan nodded. The car continued moving through downtown Los Angeles, but suddenly everything felt distant. It felt muted and unreal."Why would you ask me that?" I asked."I just want an answer,” he said, as his jaw tightened.I frowned. The question seemed ridiculous. Who thought about their birth certificate? Who randomly checked things like that?"I don't know," I admitted."I've never really looked at it,” I added.Logan's expression didn't change. Neither did the uneasy feeling growing in my stomach."Have your parents ever shown it to you?" He asked."No,” I replied. The answer came faster this time, because the more I thought about it, the stranger it seemed. The people who raised me, never showed me.They had never talked about things like that. Not birthdays, not childhood stories, not family history…Nothing.Growing up, I had always assumed they simply w

Audrey’s POVThe room went silent. I stared at Ryan, then at Logan, then back at Ryan again. For a second, I wasn't sure I had heard him correctly. The man who attacked me, the man who had broken into my house, the man who had nearly choked me unconscious, the man who still appeared in my nightmares. They found him? My heartbeat accelerated immediately."Where?"Logan said, already standing."Police station downtown,” Ryan said, looking uncomfortable."Alive?"Logan asked."Yes,” Ryan replied. That answer seemed to surprise Logan too. The attacker had escaped through the window that night. Nobody had expected him to be caught this quickly."What did he say?"I asked, as I slowly stood from my chair."The detective refused to discuss details over the phone,” Ryan said, as he shook his head."We're going,” Logan said as he grabbed his suit, ‘cause that wasn't a good sign."I'm coming too,” I said, as I immediately nodded."No,” he said, as his eyes snapped toward me."Logan,” I called a

Logan’s POVI knew something was wrong the second I walked into the room.Audrey was pale, Ryan looked furious and neither of them were speaking. That combination never led to anything good."What happened?"I asked, as I closed the office door behind me.Neither answered immediately and my stomach tightened, then Audrey silently handed me her phone.I looked down to see one message and a photograph. Just like that, my mood disappeared.A cold anger settled inside me…The kind that never ended well for anyone. The photo showed Nia leaving school yesterday. There was nothing technically threatening about it.There was no weapon, no demand, no obvious danger. Just a picture and a sentence that said “Our daughter is getting so big.”I stared at it for several long seconds, then again, then a third time because I wanted to make sure I wasn't imagining the fury building inside me."What time did this arrive?" I asked. My voice sounded dangerously calm and Ryan answered first."About two minu

Audrey’s POVI barely slept through the night. That should have surprised me after everything that happened yesterday, but it didn’t.My mind kept replaying Logan’s answer, yes. It was one simple word, one devastating word.I asked if he would have chosen me if none of this had happened, and he said yes.The certainty in his voice haunted me all night. I lay awake staring at the ceiling long after he had gone to bed, wondering how a single word could make my chest feel both lighter and heavier at the same time.Because I wanted to believe him. The problem was that I did and that was very dangerous. When my alarm finally went off the next morning, I was already awake. I just groaned and buried my face in the pillow."Mommy!" Nia's voice called, as a knock immediately followed. Then another, then another. I laughed despite myself."Come in,” I said, and the door burst open without a moment's delay.Nia rushed into my room wearing pajamas covered in tiny stars. Her hair looked like she h

Logan’s POVI did not answer her immediately. The question lingered heavily between us while the kitchen lights reflected softly against the marble counters. What happens when this year ends? I should have had an answer by now.The contract had been my idea from the start. Three hundred and sixty-five days that would be clean, simple, and controlled. At least that was what I thought back then. Now? Nothing about Audrey felt controlled anymore.I looked at her carefully. She stood across from me wearing one of my shirts, her makeup washed off after the party, her hair slightly messy from exhaustion. There was frosting on the sleeve she had somehow missed cleaning and somehow, she had never looked more beautiful.“Audrey, we still have time,” I started carefully and her expression shifted instantly.“That’s not really an answer,” she muttered. It wasn’t an answer, but the truth was worse, because lately, every time I imagined the contract ending, I felt something ugly inside my chest.
