Selina's POV.

The first thing I noticed was the cold.

Not the kind of cold that prickles your skin or makes you shiver, but the kind that wraps around your bones, like it had seeped into me while I was unconscious.

My head throbbed heavily, my limbs wouldn’t move, and when I finally tried to shift, pain bloomed in my wrists.

Chains.

And not just any chain, wolvesbane laced, I could feel it.

A sharp gasp escaped my lips as my senses finally returned. My throat was dry, my mouth tasted like dirt, and my body ached terribly.

Then I heard it, faint at first,

“Selina…”

There it was again.

“Selina…”

A voice, deep, ragged with concern. Familiar.

“Malik?” I croaked, my voice barely above a whisper.

My eyes fluttered open fully this time, and the shadows around me took shape, damp stone walls, rusted iron bars, darkness.

A dungeon.

A real dungeon.

And across from me, slumped against the wall, chained by his neck and wrists like a caged beast, was Malik.

He looked like hell. Sweat clung to

Eva's POV.The door creaked open at last. My heart thudded as I stepped away from the shadows.Selene appeared, her arms still steadying the heavy tray though it was empty now, only crumbs and a few smears of sauce left. Her face was pale, her lips pressed tightly together and her eyes watery with something she was clearly trying to suppress. Before she could fully notice me, I pushed away from the wall and stood directly in her path. Her entire body jolted. The tray nearly slipped from her fingers."M... My lady,” she stammered, her eyes widening, “what are you doing here?”I folded my arms across my chest, keeping my voice calm, though my pulse hammered against my ribs. “I think the better question, Selene, is what you are doing here.”She froze, her lips parting and closing again like a fish out of water.“I... I was just… delivering food,” she whispered.I took a deliberate step closer, my eyes narrowing. “Food to who?”Her throat bobbed. She looked left, then right, her body angl

Eva's POV.I stood at the doorway, my arms folded tightly across my chest as I watched them drive away.Only then did I allow myself to breathe.“They’re gone,” I whispered to myself, pressing a palm against the wooden frame. A small, bitter smile tugged at my lips. For the first time in days, I was free of their presence. I could almost feel their absence in the very air of the estate.I straightened my gown, pulled my shoulders back, and marched quickly into the house. This was my chance.I didn’t intend to waste it.I hastened my steps, intending to get to Selene before she disappears through my fingers.I couldn't help but smile as I remembered how Aragorn defended me against everyone, including his wife, how did I get such hold on him? He probably thinks I’m some delicate lamb, grateful to be shepherded around, wagging her tail at every crumb of trust he pretends to throw my way, hence his strong belief in me. He doesn’t know me at all. He doesn’t even know what I’m capable of.

Eva's POV.I tried to hold control my breathing as I walked alongside Aragorn, Lady Tory, Nuela, and Elder Magnus, the people I despise the most, it was taking everything in me to keep my look straight and not make an irritated face, my irritation had grown after what I have heard about the head chef. I followed silently as we approached the path that led down toward the estate’s wide gates, where a carriage waited patiently for us.I kept my eyes lowered, hands folded in front of me as though I was merely a submissive follower among them, but in truth my mind was running wild. Every step I took felt heavy. This meeting outside the border would certainly hold more information, allies, and truths that I could use, but I couldn’t afford to follow them this time. Not when I had plans that could only be executed if I stayed behind.I had to act. And act well.Just as we drew closer to the carriage, I let my foot deliberately twist against the floor , my body leaned forward with just the

Eva's POV. The further I walked, the heavier my chest became, my heart pounded so loudly that I feared it would betray me. Each step I took behind Selene and Aragorn, I made certain it was careful. My breath came in slow streams through parted lips, my ears straining for every creak of the floor, every echo of a footstep.I wasn’t supposed to be here. If anyone knew what I was doing, then everything I had been building could come crashing down. They walked quickly, Aragorn leading with powerfully long strides, and Selene scurrying after him like a shadow that had no choice but to follow. I kept my distance but never let them slip out of my sight. Each turn they made through the estate’s long corridors twisted me deeper into places I had never been before. The atmosphere had grown colder, as though I were being led into the underbelly of the estate where secrets festered. Finally, they stopped at a door. I froze behind a wide pillar, pressing my body flat against the wall, peering jus

Eva's POV.I lingered in the shadow of the kitchen corridor, my back lightly pressed against the cold stone wall as I tried to steady my breathing. My palms were beginning to get sweaty, and my heart an uneven drum inside my chest, it was as a result of the plan brewing inside me, a risky one it is, but I have to speak to Selene. My pulse quickened whenever I thought of the consequences of her ratting me out to Aragorn, because what if her loyalty lies heavily with him since he has leverage over her? But everytime I felt that way, I reminded myself of the reason I was here: Nicklaus, our marriage, our peace, how do I achieve that without taking risks to that effect? Marisol had signaled me earlier, a quick flick of her eyes as she carried water jugs past my room. It was her subtle way of saying now’s the time. She had seen something, and I trusted her judgment. That was why I found myself here, pretending to be nothing more than a bored guest hovering around the kitchen door.I adju

Eva's POV.I adjusted my robe my shoulders, my eyes darting left and right as I moved down the shadowed passageway leading toward the estate’s outer gate. I pulled my cloak tighter, steadying my breath as I reached the gate, looking around again to make no one was watching from any corner.Thankfully, it was the gate guard, Hayden, the same one I had struck a deal with that was at the gate post, I have been more careful about coming to see him after I noticed there were others at the post too, and they all hustled between shifts; and I haven't spoken to any of them yet, none has ticked my fancy for loyalty. He sat hunched on the small wooden stool by the post. “Evening, Hayden,” I greeted in a low voice and he straightened, though not without looking startled first.“Lady Eva,” he called sternly as he panted, although respectfully. “I didn’t hear your steps, you scared me." I allowed flashed him a warm smile. "I'm sorry about that, I was being careful not to raise my voice too loud
