Viene’s POV

The backlash hit an hour after I left the study, and it hit harder than anything the sessions had ever left behind.

It started as a ringing behind my eyes, thin and high, the kind of sound that isn’t really a sound at all. By the time I made it back to my room, my hands wouldn’t stop shaking, and my skin felt too tight for my body, like something under it wanted more room than I had to give.

I made it as far as the edge of the bed before my knees gave out.

I didn’t call for any

Viene’s POV I woke up to an empty house. Not literally. Staff moved through the halls the way they always did, quiet and efficient. But Neil’s door stood open with the room dark behind it, untouched since the night before, and Nolan wasn’t at breakfast, and the coffee in the kitchen had gone cold in the pot like nobody had bothered to drink it before rushing off somewhere else. I checked the study first. Empty, the packet from last night gone from the desk. I checked the records room next. Also empty. Whatever had pulled all three of them out of bed before sunrise had pulled them somewhere I hadn’t been invited. I found all three of them behind the closed door of Nathan’s office, voices low enough that I couldn’t make out words through the wood, just the rhythm of an argument in progress, one voice cutting off another, then another cutting that one off in turn. I knocked. Nobody answered fast enough. I went in anyway. Three heads turned. The proximity log sat open on Nathan’s

Viene’s POV The surge passed in under ten seconds. Nathan had me by the shoulders before I hit the floor. Nolan’s hand found my collarbone, pressing hard, and the pressure under my skin folded back down to almost nothing, like something had tested the lock, felt it give, and pulled back to think about what came next. “Gone,” I said. “It’s gone. For now.” “For now isn’t good enough,” Nathan said. “It’s what we have.” Neil didn’t say anything. He was already at the door, already gone, folder under his arm, moving like a man who’d just been handed one more reason not to sleep. Nathan crouched down and checked my pulse himself, two fingers against my wrist, counting under his breath. When he finished he didn’t say whether the number satisfied him. He just helped me up and told me to eat something, which from Nathan counted as an order dressed up as concern. By evening the house had gone still in the specific way it always did before something. Curtains drawn early. Staff sent hom

Viene’s POV The ache started small. A pull under my collarbone, right after I woke up. I blamed it on a bad night’s sleep and got dressed anyway. By midmorning it hadn’t faded. It had sharpened, aimed, like something on the other end had started paying attention to me specifically instead of just existing somewhere out in the world. I didn’t say anything. Not at breakfast. Not when Nolan caught me pressing my hand to my chest over coffee and asked if I was all right. I told him I was fine. He didn’t believe me — I could tell by the way his eyes stayed on me a beat too long — but he let it go, which was its own kind of trust I didn’t examine too closely. “You’d tell me,” he said, not quite a question, “if it got worse.” “I’d tell you.” “That’s not the same as yes.” “It’s the best you’re getting before I’ve figured out what it even is.” He didn’t push further. That was Nolan — patient in a way that never quite felt like giving up. By noon the ache had a shape. Not pain exactl

Viene’s POV I told myself I’d stay away from Neil for a while. A day, maybe two. Long enough to remember what it felt like to trust him again before I let myself stand close enough to be disappointed by him a second time. It lasted six hours. I spent most of those six hours in my room, telling myself the distance was working. It wasn’t. It was just quiet in the specific way a held breath is quiet, and I knew it the second Nathan mentioned the archive needed sorting and my first thought was whether Neil would be the one helping. He found me in the archive annex where I’d gone to avoid him, sorting through a stack of unrelated records Nathan had asked me to catalog, mindless work that at least gave my hands something to do besides shake. Dust from the older files had settled into everything down here, the shelves, the table, the light itself, so that the whole room smelled faintly of paper going slowly to dust. Neil set a second stack down across the table without asking if I wante

Viene’s POV I waited until Nathan was in the east wing and Nolan had gone to check the perimeter before I went looking for Neil. Not because I wanted to hide it from either of them. Because I needed him without an audience, and I think some part of him needed the same thing, because he didn’t ask why I’d waited until the house had gone quiet around us. The corridor outside the study was dark except for the strip of light under his door. I stood there a moment before I went in, listening to my own pulse instead of knocking, trying to decide whether I actually wanted the answer badly enough to hear it. I went in anyway. I found him in the study again, the same desk, the same drawer he’d opened four nights ago. He looked up when I came in and didn’t reach for anything this time. He just watched me cross the room and sit down across from him, like he already knew what I’d come to ask. “You know more than one recovered line,” I said. “Viene—” “Don’t. Don’t start with my name like t

Nolan was already at my door before I’d finished sliding to the floor, like some part of him had felt it happening before I did. “Viene.” He was down beside me in a second, his hands finding my shoulders without hesitation, without asking permission first the way he usually did. “Look at me. Not the floor. Me.” I tried. The room kept tilting at the edges no matter where I aimed my eyes. “It’s the redacted line,” I managed. “The carrier. It’s — I don’t know what it’s doi
