Zara closed the book abruptly when she couldn't take it any more. She struggled to keep her emotions in check but her frail heart betrayed her. She kept the book back in place, knowing it was fate that had made her to come across the book.

She stormed back into the chamber beneath the Moonstone Pack’s temple, her mind reeling. The icy morning air did little to cool the fire burning inside her.

She couldn't get rid of the feeling that Draven had known something—something asides her curse and that was why he had refused to mark her, and it wasn't because neither of them would die if he marked or rejected her. Had he been trying to protect her, or himself?

There was an uproar coming from outside of the chamber that those in the temple couldn't ignore.

"Where is that noise coming from?!" Zara said to herself. Every thought concerning the prophecy evacuated into thin air, her attention drawing to what was going on outside of the temple.

She rushed out to investigate the source of the noise and was dumbstruck to realise that a war had broken out.

A shout rang through the pack grounds, breaking through her thoughts.

“Attack!”

The ground trembled beneath Zara’s feet as wolves rushed through the village, their howls of alarm cutting through the air. Zara sprinted toward the pack house, her instincts screaming that something was wrong; and no, it wasn't because a war had broken out between neighbouring packs, or rather, men from the same pack who were at war with themselves.

She smelled something in the air, something that made her throat run dry. There was the smell of blood in the air—royal Lycan blood.

It didn't take a moment for her to discern that it was Alpha Draven's blood.

She rounded the corner and skidded to a halt. She found The Lycan King lying crumpled on the stone steps, his powerful body broken and still.

“No—”

Zara mouthed in shock and dropped to her knees beside him, pressing her hands against the gaping wound in his side. His breaths were ragged, his obsidian eyes flickering open just enough to meet hers.

“Ambush,” he rasped, blood trickling from his lips.

Her stomach twisted as she took in the scene—Draven had been attacked from behind, by someone he had trusted the most.

And then she saw him, the one who had attacked Alpha Draven. It was Dorian, his trusted beta.

Zara's blood immediately began to boil.

Kael’s own Beta stood a few feet away, his silver eyes were cold and unrepentant, his sword still dripping with the king’s blood.

“You did this?” Zara whispered, rage boiling under her skin.

Dorian smirked. “You should be thanking me. I saved you the trouble of choosing.”

Her hands clenched into fists. “You betrayed your king.” she went on to say.

Dorian’s smirk only widened. "Everyone in the pack is aware of the prophecy, Zara, we just chose to keep silent over itb we knew you were the king's mate all along."

“but you know one thing, he was never meant to rule. Neither were you.”

A chorus of growls echoed around them as warriors began to gather, torn between loyalty and the shocking betrayal unfolding before them.

Zara stood, her chest heaving with fury. “Stand down, or I will rip your throat out myself.”

Dorian chuckled. “You really think they’ll follow you? A Beta with a cursed bond?”

Zara’s wolf surged inside her. Enough.

She lunged forward.

Their bodies collided in a blur of claws and fangs. Dorian was fast, but Zara was faster. She dodged his blade, twisted behind him, and sank her claws into his chest, the fight ended before it even started.

Dorian gasped, his eyes wide with shock as Zara whispered in his ear, “Long live the king.”

With one final twist, she ripped the life from him, letting his body collapse at her feet.

Silence fell over the pack.

Zara turned to the warriors still watching, her gaze blazing. “Your Alpha is down. That means I’m in charge.”

A murmur rippled through the wolves. Then, slowly, they lowered their heads in submission. She was their leader now and it would stay like that until Lycan King had recovered.

She lashed out commands Immediately to lead him back into his chambers and they did so without any further questions. It was a rare incidence to see a wolf, especially a female, giving orders to lycans. She was lower than them in rank but with how the lycans had witnessed Dorian's death by her hands, they thought it wise to obey her commands.

Draven laid unconscious in his quarters as the healer made his way through the door, Draven's breathing shallow, he was barely breathing by the time the healer arrived.

Zara sat beside him, gripping his hand as the weight of what she had learned pressed down on her.

The curse. The prophecy. The choice she had to make.

“By her blood, the curse shall be undone.”

Her blood though not his. All the events were unravelling too fast for her to take in.

Just a few days ago, she would have given up anything just to be with Alpha Kieran but his rejection hit, shattering everything inside her, but a few hours later, she sensed the mating bond on another mate, not just any wolf but the Lycan King who was also as cursed as herself, not only was he cursed, but his entire pack.

A rustle at the door made her lift her head. The Elder of the pack, a frail woman with piercing silver eyes, stepped inside.

“You’ve read the prophecy, Zara Grey.” It wasn’t a question.

Zara swallowed before nodding. “Tell me everything I need to know.”

The room became silent. Those words ranged in their heads.*Send Zara Grey and come alone.*Zara stared at the parchment lying on the table. For a moment, she could only hear the sounds of the wind in the air, nobody spoke, there were no voices, no jokes, no arguments, no bells ringing... Just pure silence. Then Rynese broke the silence."Well....." He said Everyone looked at him."That's definitely a no."The tension in the room became lesser.Selene folded her arms."It wasn't a request.""No, it was a demand," Valkyrie said. "Which is why it's definitely a no."Kael didn't say anything, Zara looked at him. Immediately, she regretted it. The expression on his face was a bit terrifying because he looked too calm for what was going on. His silver eyes remained fixed on the note."Kael." Zara called out.He didn't answer."Kael." She called out again.Slowly, his gaze shifted to hers."What?"That single word came out as though he had not intended it at her but for the situation. Zara

Zara didn't sleep after everything that had happened, she could still see the figure on the ridge. Every time she closed her eyes, she saw it again standing and staring directly at her then lifting a hand and waving it at her as though it knew her.The worst part wasn't the fact that she was scared but how it chooses to wave at only her.Something about the figure felt wrong in a way she couldn't explain and it terrified her more than anything. The morning was cold and gray, the city looked exhausted. People moved through the streets with dark circles under their eyes, nobody was smiling. It was like they waited for something to happen or they hoped it didn't.Zara was drinking a cup of bitter tea when she heard a loud knock on the door. Kael opened it.A young vampire messenger stood outside breathing hard, his face was pale."Lady Selene needs you."Kael immediately straightened up."Why?"The messenger swallowed."They found something."* * * * * An hour later, they were standing

The last barrier just fell. Those words sounded like a death sentence. For a moment, Zara simply stared at Kael praying he would explain something somehow instead, he kept looking north toward something only him seemed to understand. The horn sounded again. The sound was like it was rolled across the city and went directly into Zara's ears. Where they stood, the guards exchanged nervous glances and didn't say anything to each other."What barrier?" Zara finally asked.Kael looked at her, his expression didn't look frightening, he looked like he had resigned like he was expecting it."The barriers were never just protecting the Belmar territory." His voice was quiet."The north was built around them." Zara frowned."What does that mean?"Before Kael could answer her, footsteps approached them. Selene appeared moments later, she looked really exhausted that you could literally see the dark circles beneath her eyes. Her coat hung on her shoulders, it looked like it was going to fall off

The screams were coming from the eastern district.By the time Zara and the others reached the streets, everybody in the city were already panicking. People were pouring out of buildings, guards were everywhere looking in every direction.Someone had even knocked a lantern by mistake and it shattered on the ground across the road."What happened?" Zara shouted at a guard passing. The vampire barely slowed down."Someone came back!" The guard shouted walking as though he was almost running. That wasn't an answer, it only made her curiousity widened.Apparently everyone in the north had made a collective decision never to explain anything properly. They followed the crowd and went further, the thicker it became the sooner they reached a small square surrounded by stone buildings.Hundreds of people were already gathered there, nobody was shouting nor speaking aloud. The silence there was so much that you could hear the sound of a pin if it dropped to the ground.Everybody looked terrifi

Nobody moved, the figures remained standing in the distance silent and motionless, it was just there watching them. The mountain ridge spread between them and the city, but somehow Zara still felt like they had taken special attention to her and she felt weird. The scout beside them looked ready to faint. Honestly, she couldn't even blame him because she would have done the same if she were in his shoes."What are they?" Rynese asked, curiosity written all over his face.Nobody answered him, it wasn't because they didn't want to but there wasn't an answer to his question.Selene's face had gone pale again. At this point, Zara was beginning to think that it was becoming a habit for her, the vampire woman stared at the distant silhouettes."No."The word slipped out quietly."No, no, no..." She continued.Kael's eyes narrowed."You know what they are."It wasn't a question.Selene swallowed."They aren't supposed to be awake." She said still staring into space Zara felt a cold feeling s

A very short, nervous laughter."Okay."Nobody reacted."Right." He said and rubbed both hands over his face."It's either I've completely lost my mind, or we're all skipping over the fact that a whole building that disappeared came back again.""It's not the building that I'm worried about.," Valkyrie said quietly.Everybody turned to stare at her."What worries you then?" Zara asked.Valkyrie's expression changed."It's the fact that it came back."Silence settled over them because somehow this felt worst, the tower disappearing can always be explained but coming back..... Nahhh! Impossible. Nobody will believe that bull shit. The thought of it made Zara's skin crawl."What did the scout actually see?" she asked.Selene folded her arms."The tower."" I
