Zara's world began to spin. King Draven had just called her by her name; how in earth did he know her name. Scratch that, what was it he had said last before her ears began to ring and her heart began to race faster in her chest?!

She didn't think she had heard him right, her wolf was growling so loudly that she found it hard to process a y further words that had emanated from Draven's mouth.

And then, the tingling sensation hit her nose, the familiar scent she had always dreaded and wished she would never get the privilege of sensing it again, but here it was, pulling at her heart strings.

Zara’s breath hitched, her wolf stirring at the undeniable pull of the bond snapping into place. The air between them hummed with raw power, a connection stronger than anything she had ever felt before. But instead of the rejection she expected, Draven didn’t push her away.

He took a step forward, their bodies almost pressing together.

She had not expected that in the space of one night, she would get rejected and find another mate right after. But she wasn't about to let herself go through the same process again, regardless of his status.

“I don’t have time for this,” Zara said, stepping back instinctively. “If you’ve come to reject me, do it quickly.”

Draven's lips curled into something that wasn’t quite a smile. “You assume too much.”

Zara’s brow furrowed. He wasn’t rejecting her?

For the first time in her life, the pain of rejection didn’t come. Instead, Draven reached out, his fingers brushing against her wrist. A jolt of heat shot through her, not just the pull of the mate bond but something deeper, darker.

“I won’t reject you, Zara,” Draven murmured. “But I won’t mark you either.”

Zara stilled, her mind struggling to comprehend his words.

“Why?” she asked, voice quieter than she intended.

Draven's expression darkened, his gaze flickering with something she couldn’t place. “Because if I do, you’ll die.”

Zara's eyes widened at his words. "Die?!" She exclaimed.

"Can you not sense the curse around you, Zara." He said in a soft voice that made Zara's stomach churn both from the texture of his voice and what he was revealing to her.

"And besides, Zara, you know you were not supposed to be here. My men are right over there... hunting." He said, pointing into the distance.

"I'm not quite disappointed that the scent of the mating bond has led me to you, Zara, but you need to head home right now!" He ordered her and led her into the direction from Where she had come.

He stroked her chin lightly before he turned and headed in the opposite direction.

"You're back already?!" Denice could help but voice out her surprise when she saw Zara walk in through the door.

"I changed my mind. I think I'd prefer to sleep over it instead." Zara replied and collapsed into her bed.

She laid awake that night, staring at the ceiling of her cabin while Draven's words replayed in her mind. Why would marking her kill her? she had thought.

A chill crept through her body, and for the first time, she thought of her past rejections not as a string of bad luck—but as a pattern.

A pattern that made no sense.

Sitting up, she reached for her phone and scrolled through old messages from the mates who had cast her aside. But as she searched, she realized something that made her blood run cold.

There were recent reports of wolves disappearing without a trace and every single effort to find them was futile. It had been posted just a few hours ago that a couple more wolves had disappeared that evening and Alpha Kieran was among them.

Zara sat up in bed and wiped her eyes. She began doing some more research; all of her other mates that had rejected had also disappeared mysteriously.

Six rejections. Six mates. Six disappearances.

A sharp knock on her window sent her heart into a frantic rhythm. Zara spun, eyes narrowing as a hooded figure stood outside in the shadows.

Her gaze fell on Denice who still fast asleep on her bed.

Cautiously, Zara stood and went to unlatch the window. The scent of earth and musk filled her senses as she did, it was a rogue.

“You’re in danger,” the man rasped, his voice barely audible over the night breeze. “Your bond with Kael isn’t a blessing. It’s a trap.”

Zara stiffened. “Who are you?”

The rogue’s gaze darted around, fear flashing in his eyes. “The others—they didn’t just reject you. They were erased.”

A chill ran down her spine. “What do you mean?”

“They were never meant to claim you,” he whispered urgently. “Neither is the King. Someone—something—is using you, and if you don’t leave now, you’ll be next.”

Before she could demand more answers, the rogue’s body convulsed, his eyes going wide with terror. A strangled gasp left his lips before he dropped to the ground, a dagger buried in his back.

Zara stumbled away, her breath catching as Draven emerged from the shadows, his obsidian eyes glowing in the moonlight.

His hands were clenched into fists and his body rigid. But there was something wrong with him. His muscles tensed unnaturally, his breaths came in ragged gasps. His wolf was fighting for control.

“Dra.... Draven?” she whispered, "What...what are you doing here, how did you know where I lived?!"

His head snapped toward her, and for the first time, she wasn’t sure if he truly recognized her.

“I—” His voice was raw, guttural, as if he were in pain. His eyes flickered from black to molten gold, his fingers twitching at his sides.

Then, with a growl that shook the night, Draven dropped to his knees, gripping his head as if he were battling something unseen.

Zara rushed to him, but before she could reach him, a deep, inhuman voice which didn't seem to belong to him, growled from his lips.

"It’s too late."

Zara froze, her blood running ice-cold.

Draven lifted his head, his gaze locking onto hers with an intensity that made her heart hammer against her ribs.

Something—or someone—was inside him. And it wanted her dead.

Zara didn't sleep after everything that had happened, she could still see the figure on the ridge. Every time she closed her eyes, she saw it again standing and staring directly at her then lifting a hand and waving it at her as though it knew her.The worst part wasn't the fact that she was scared but how it chooses to wave at only her.Something about the figure felt wrong in a way she couldn't explain and it terrified her more than anything. The morning was cold and gray, the city looked exhausted. People moved through the streets with dark circles under their eyes, nobody was smiling. It was like they waited for something to happen or they hoped it didn't.Zara was drinking a cup of bitter tea when she heard a loud knock on the door. Kael opened it.A young vampire messenger stood outside breathing hard, his face was pale."Lady Selene needs you."Kael immediately straightened up."Why?"The messenger swallowed."They found something."* * * * * An hour later, they were standing

The last barrier just fell. Those words sounded like a death sentence. For a moment, Zara simply stared at Kael praying he would explain something somehow instead, he kept looking north toward something only him seemed to understand. The horn sounded again. The sound was like it was rolled across the city and went directly into Zara's ears. Where they stood, the guards exchanged nervous glances and didn't say anything to each other."What barrier?" Zara finally asked.Kael looked at her, his expression didn't look frightening, he looked like he had resigned like he was expecting it."The barriers were never just protecting the Belmar territory." His voice was quiet."The north was built around them." Zara frowned."What does that mean?"Before Kael could answer her, footsteps approached them. Selene appeared moments later, she looked really exhausted that you could literally see the dark circles beneath her eyes. Her coat hung on her shoulders, it looked like it was going to fall off

The screams were coming from the eastern district.By the time Zara and the others reached the streets, everybody in the city were already panicking. People were pouring out of buildings, guards were everywhere looking in every direction.Someone had even knocked a lantern by mistake and it shattered on the ground across the road."What happened?" Zara shouted at a guard passing. The vampire barely slowed down."Someone came back!" The guard shouted walking as though he was almost running. That wasn't an answer, it only made her curiousity widened.Apparently everyone in the north had made a collective decision never to explain anything properly. They followed the crowd and went further, the thicker it became the sooner they reached a small square surrounded by stone buildings.Hundreds of people were already gathered there, nobody was shouting nor speaking aloud. The silence there was so much that you could hear the sound of a pin if it dropped to the ground.Everybody looked terrifi

Nobody moved, the figures remained standing in the distance silent and motionless, it was just there watching them. The mountain ridge spread between them and the city, but somehow Zara still felt like they had taken special attention to her and she felt weird. The scout beside them looked ready to faint. Honestly, she couldn't even blame him because she would have done the same if she were in his shoes."What are they?" Rynese asked, curiosity written all over his face.Nobody answered him, it wasn't because they didn't want to but there wasn't an answer to his question.Selene's face had gone pale again. At this point, Zara was beginning to think that it was becoming a habit for her, the vampire woman stared at the distant silhouettes."No."The word slipped out quietly."No, no, no..." She continued.Kael's eyes narrowed."You know what they are."It wasn't a question.Selene swallowed."They aren't supposed to be awake." She said still staring into space Zara felt a cold feeling s

The tower came back, that was so strange.Nobody spoke about it, it left them numb and shocked.Zara stared at Kael, waiting for him to say he was joking or something but he didn't instead Rynese looked between them and then laughed. A very short, nervous laughter."Okay."Nobody reacted."Right." He said and rubbed both hands over his face."It's either I've completely lost my mind, or we're all skipping over the fact that a whole building that disappeared came back again.""It's not the building that I'm worried about.," Valkyrie said quietly.Everybody turned to stare at her."What worries you then?" Zara asked.Valkyrie's expression changed."It's the fact that it came back."Silence settled over them because somehow this felt worst, the tower disappearing can always be explained but coming back..... Nahhh! Impossible. Nobody will believe that bull shit. The thought of it made Zara's skin crawl."What did the scout actually see?" she asked.Selene folded her arms."The tower."" I

The western tower had disappeared, this was not getting any better. Nobody said anything for a few seconds. The eastern tower had vanished only a few hours ago now another one was gone. What was really going on?Zara felt a knot tighten in her stomach, beside her, Kael looked really calm which was not a good sign at all. Selene rubbed a hand over her face and sighed."We need to go.""Go where?" Rynese asked looking worried."The council chamber, it is a place where people make decisions that are terrible and they call it leadership... Mtcheww." She sighed again.Rynese nodded thoughtfully.* * * * * * The council chamber was beneath the city, the further down they went, the colder it became.Ancient stone corridors were everywhere around them. They used torches to find their way through, this place was really old.It looked like something that had existed long before the people currently occupying it. Zara didn't like this place, her wolf didn't like it either. The farther they de

James Draven sat down. There was a flat rock at the edge of the valley and he found it without looking and settled onto it like a man arriving at a theatre. He crossed one ankle over his knee. He did not shift. He did not draw a weapon. He simply watched.Kael clocked it in the half second before e

The forest was quiet. Kael had learned to read that particular silence years ago. This one felt looser though like the morning hadn't decided what it was yet."Nothing on the eastern ridge," Rynese said, dropping down from the outcrop he'd been using as a vantage point. "No movement. No scent mark

"We are not letting this one out of our sight," Kael said.He was looking at his two men. His voice had returned to its normal register.
