ELIAS’ POV

It was a tie game with four minutes on the clock. The scoreboard buzzed red above me 3 to 3 and I had to clench my stick hard and breathe even harder.

My head was still ringing from the boards and my knee throbbed every time I put weight on it but thankfully they’d heal soon enough. My gloves were torn at the seam where I had clenched my fists so hard trying not to shift.

Owen still had a hand on my shoulder and Jace had his stick across my chest like a barrier.

"Breathe, Cap," Owen

"Breathe, you go now, we lose you for the season. Scouts will write you off as a hot head, Easton’s in the crowd too, calm your horses, I know it’s difficult but Rosalie is watching."I looked past him to the front row.Rosalie was not screaming anymore and hands were pressed flat against the glass. Her face was white, her eyes were locked on mine and they were not saying do not fight. They were saying come back.I picked up my stick. The sound it made when it hit

ELIAS POVThree days, coach said three days and it felt like three years. My palms kept getting sweaty, my thoughts kept spiraling and I had Rosalie to look after. I had not let her out of my sight since I found her on the floor. She said she was fine and that her wolf was awake now. At least that’s what she told me, and although she had said it so happily, the corner of her lips still froze as though she was afraid. But I had to focus because today was the Timber Wolves game. The rink was packed, there were no empty seat and the air smelled like ice and popcorn and cheap coffee. The scout box up top was full. I could see the silhouettes of men in suits with notebooks, exactly like Coach said. And in the front row, right behind our bench, was my wife.Rosalie was wearing my away jersey, number 17, it swallowed her. Her hair was up, her cheeks were pink from the cold. When she saw me look at her, she smiled and pressed her hand to her chest, right where our bond lives. She mouthed, I

Rosalie’s povI woke up because someone was shaking me, desperately."Rosalie! Rosalie, please! Hey! Hey, look at me! Please!"The voice was broken. It was Elias. My eyes flickered to see his hands on my face and they were so warm they burned my cold skin.I tried to open my eyes but my eyelids felt like they were made of lead. My whole body felt heavy, like I had been swimming in deep snow for hours and my limbs had forgotten how to work and my chest hurt. "Elias?" My voice came out as a croak. "Yes! Yes, I am here! I am here, love! you’re okay, you’re okay, just breathe for me, okay? Just breathe!"I forced my eyes open.He was holding me in his lap on the living room floor. His hockey bag was thrown in the doorway. He was still in his sweaty practice clothes, his hair wet, his face pale and terrified. His eyes were red like he had been crying or like he was about to. He was rocking me back and forth like a child.I realized I was freezing. My fingers were ice but his chest was wa

Elias POVPractice was hell on purpose and if I wasn’t captain, I’d sprawl into the ground and take a breather but that wasn’t the case.Coach had us out there an hour early and kept us an hour late. No pucks at first, just skating, laps and laps until the ice was chewed up and my legs were shaking so bad I thought they would give out. He does this when he is nervous about a big game. He skates the fear out of us."Again!" he shouted from the bench, his whistle screaming so loud my ears rang. "You skate like old men! My grandmother skates faster and she is dead!"We all groaned but we skated again. First line, second line, rookies at the back wheezing. I am captain now. I had to be at the front even when my lungs are on fire. That is the job. You don't stop, even when you want to puke. After the twelfth lap, Coach finally blew the whistle and let us get our sticks. My thighs were burning. My jersey was stuck to my back with sweat."Circle up! Now! In the middle! Let's go!"We all skat

Rosalie’s povI laid there on the couch, my brain still blank. My eyes glanced over at the wall clock and I could tell that he wouldn’t be home for another four to five hours.“I better start working” I mumbled under my breath, moving out of the living room and heading to the small kitchenette we had. I needed to do something with my hands before my head ate me alive.I started washing the dishes this morning. The same two mugs, his protein shaker that always smelled like vanilla no matter how much I scrubbed it, my little plate. Elder Knox's words kept looping in my head, mates of such wolves dying young, it felt more like a threat than a diagnosis.I had seen the way Elias looked when he told me. He was trying to be brave for me, but I know that look now, it’s his captain look. The look he gets before a tough game when he knows someone might get hurt but he has to go out there anyway.I rinsed my hands and pressed them to my chest again, nothing, no thump that wasn't my own heart,

Rosalie’s povI settled in the seat right next to Elias and he wasted no time before slipping his hand into mine. I squeezed firmly to tell him that I was alright even when I knew that deep down, I wasn’t.“Did he say anything else while I was gone?” I asked on the drive home.He hesitated a bit before turning to look at me. If there was one thing I knew about Elias, he’d never lie. So he pulled up on the side of the road and focused on me, which meant that this was going to be serious.“He said something about white wolves being dangerous and their mates dying” he revealed, sending a shiver down my spine. The cold felt really strong but it wasn’t just from the breeze, it was from the realization that wasn’t just a dream.“Don’t worry, you’re not a white wolf and even if you are, I don’t care” his eyes searched me.“But I’d be dangerous to you…I might..kill you” I stuttered and he cupped my face in his palms again, centering me. “Look at me..” he pleaded even when I tried to look awa
