153. Set Things Right!

April’s POV

We unlocked the door and flung it open. The interior smelled awful, and he pinched our noses closed in disgust. The seats were damp and mouldy and we could find insects already making a home in the tiny crevices of the car.

Lucy looked at me downcast. If this was the state of the car, then it was possible that the elements and insects had already eaten away at the fragile paper of the diary.

We soon began our frantic search. We checked the pigeonhole of the car and around the seats. Though it was urgent, we were both sceptical about picking out hands inside small holes in case there was a snake hiding inside there or something worse.

We searched for hours, and all we could find were soggy tax papers and faded pictures.

I could see Lucy's hope begin to waver.

"I don't think it is here, April. It's possible that it has been destroyed or someone has taken it."

I didn't want her to feel bad and continued to encourage her to look. Besides, who would want to read a diary? There
