POV: Audrey
My mom was going to hear from me today. I’d had enough of the reckless, self-serving decisions she made to protect her so-called reputation.
Dad’s company scandal was clearly the result of her selfishness and her obsession with always appearing high-class in society. She could chase her luxury lifestyle all she wanted, but selling Jimmie off to Mr. Royales? That was the line she wasn’t crossing.
Jimmie wasn’t going to slave for any man—least of all for that cold beast. Of all the billionaires in Edinburgh, she picked him—enigamtic, ruthless and feared.
The thought made my foot slam down harder on the accelerator, my car racing like a freed bird toward the Royals Hotel, where the party was happening. My phone wouldn’t stop buzzing, and I knew it was her calling. But I wasn’t giving in to her tantrums today.
When I pulled up there, she was at the entrance pacing frantically. Even from here, I could feel the storm radiating off her. I walked up to her without an ounce of urgency.
“Audrey.”
“What are you doing here?” she snapped, like I had no right to be in her precious environment. Her eyes pierced straight through me.
Jimmie and I were her only children. Growing up, she’d never liked me. I was the wild kid who hated books, threw tantrums, and acted on emotions. Jimmie was the opposite: calm, brilliant, obedient. Even when she didn’t like something, she smiled and complied.
That’s exactly why my mom chose her for this marriage—because she knew Jimmie wouldn’t refuse her. But I wasn’t going to let her walk down that aisle.
“Where’s Jimmie?” My voice shook.
“You need to leave, Audrey,” she whispered, gripping my arm hard.
“Not until I see her.” I yanked my hand free.
“She’s busy right now. I can pass along your message.”
“Mom, I know you hate seeing my face, but I’m not leaving until I see Jimmie.”
“Do you want to cause a scene here?” Her face tightened.
“Huh?”
“Why must you make everything about you?”
“Mom!” I yelled, but she didn’t flinch.
“You’d better leave, or I’ll call security,” she threatened, shoving at my arm.
“I’m not leaving. That’s final.” My grip locked around her wrist.
“Audrey! For the love of God, just leave. Jimmie wouldn’t be happy about this,” she pleaded, knowing damn well I wouldn’t give in.
“I don’t care,” I shot back. “I’m not leaving without seeing her.”
“Audrey, just try to—”
She was cut off by my dad’s voice.
“What’s going on here?”
His forehead was creased tight and fists were clenched. Knowing his temper, I treaded carefully with my words.
“Megan,” he said, his voice like steel. “What do you think you’re doing?”
We both let go of each other instantly. My mom avoided his gaze. A cold shiver ran down my spine.
My dad was dangerous when he was angry.
“She wants to see Jimmie,” my mom said flatly.
“And?”
“You know Audrey—she has a knack for ruining things. That’s what she’s here for.”
“Oh my God, Mom!” Tears burned in my eyes, but she ignored me.
“I’ve been trying to get her to wait because Jimmie is busy prepping for her wedding, but she’s being stubborn,” she added, rolling her eyes.
“Honestly, I’m starting to get pissed.”
“So you’re both just standing here arguing?” my dad asked.
“But you know how she—”
“Enough, Megan.” His eyes shut for a second, like he was holding back an explosion. After a deep breath, he dropped the bomb.
“Jimmie’s missing.”
“What?” My mom and I said in unison.
“She’s been gone for over an hour. She was supposed to appear before the guests, but she hasn’t shown up…”
I didn’t wait for him to finish. I bolted.
I had to find her. If anything happened to Jimmie, I’d never forgive my mom.
I sprinted to the VIP elevator—if she was anywhere, it’d be in a private suite. But I needed an access card.
Heart pounding, I ran back to my mom, yanked her purse from her arm, and dumped its contents onto the tiled floor. A flash of gold caught my eye: a card labeled VIP. I snatched it and darted back to the elevator.
The doors dinged open, and I rushed into the first room I saw. It was empty—and unnervingly cold, like I’d stepped into a place meant for the dead. My throat tightened as I stepped inside.
“Jimmie…” My voice echoed back at me.
I fumbled along the wall for a switch but accidentally pressed a button on a remote. The lights flickered on. However, my relief lasted only a second when I saw it.
A trail of blood, leading to the bathroom.
My stomach knotted and sweat rolled down my temples despite the icy air. My hands trembled and with a pang of fear, I followed the trail
When I stepped into the bathroom, my hope shattered.
Jimmie's body lay in the bathtub drowned in a bloody pool of water and her cold face visible.
Shock and grief hit me all at once, and my legs gave way. I collapsed onto the wet floor, numb.
POV: Audrey. Background song: TV by Billie Eillish. The cruel hours of the night creeped in rapidly and soon I found myself staring at the reflection in the mirror. While the yellow dress was clasped to my body, the black sequin dress that Lexan sent to me lay on the bed seeking my attention. My choice wasn't going to sit well with Lexan. Guilt washed over me as I pondered on what to do. Alexander won't even care if I wore one of his dresses but my mind was leaning to the sunshine dress. Giving myself one final look in the mirror, I grabbed my purse and stormed out. “Ma'am, you look gorgeous.” Charles complimented nicely. “Thank you Charles.” My voice fell flat. “Are you okay ma'am?” He asked knotting his brows. “I don't know Charles. Do you think I should have worn the dress that Lexan sent?” I looked up at him like he had a solution. “Ma'am. I think you should go with what your mind accepts.” The reply was precise. I nodded at him and headed to
POV: Audrey. The bright light seeping from the window nearly blinded me as my pupils struggled to adjust to it. Rubbing my hazy eyes, I sat up lazily. Butler Charles was standing near the curtains, hands clasped behind him like he had been waiting for me all morning. “Good morning Charles. You are reporting already?” I asked fuzzy. “yes ma'am. How was your night?” “Very well dear.” “Is Alexander home yet?” “No ma'am.” My face fell instantly. It's been two weeks since we got married and the last time I set my eyes on him was the party night. In the midst of his sneaky charade, he got a work call and vanished since then. The worst part? I couldn't even decipher if he was really tied up with work, avoiding me or if he had other women outside. Talk about taking me to your galaxy but you disappeared even before the wedding could end. “Ma'am, are you okay?” Charles asked, his voice low with concern. “Yeah sure…. I'm fine.” I said trying
POV: Alexander The sound of my voice made the crowd resonate in fear as I walked towards Jimmie with pride and took her hand in mine. She had been gone for quite a while and the guests were getting suspicious. Prior to searching for her,I noticed the chaos going on, only to find her amidst it. “What do you think you are doing?” she asked, staring at me intensely. “Thank goodness you are here Alexander.” Sophia whimpered. “This b*tch here ruined……” but I cut her short. “Not another word Sophia. I really don't care about what's going on but, no one gets to insult my bride. I'm only letting you off because of mom.” “but Alexander she…” I already knew it was about her dress. Jimmie did a damn fine job ruining it. “Meet Charles for your dress.” I finished coolly. Sophia glared at Jimmie like she had just snatched one of her toys. She and I grew up together and we're usually mistaken for siblings. She wasn't a bad person but spoiled– thanks to my mom
Audrey Alexander and I walked down, the majestically designed aisle, of the party venue. The aisle was lined with a beautiful red carpet which was lavishly designed with lavenders, roses and tulips making them scream not just luxury but also royalty. The party room was an open garden, which was situated at the heart of the hotel. It had a kidney shaped swimming pool in it which looked comforting. They also illuminated stars from the lights beneath them, causing the pool’s surface to embody the sky. I could literally jump in it and forget all that just happened but, I wasn't a good swimmer. The cotton garlands lining the garden could almost be mistaken for a roof. It was beautifully decorated, with white and green roses, which was a matching color with the carpet grasses. The lights which hung from them, shone brightly and were being aided by the stars that embraced the sky. Everything looked perfect and for a moment, it felt as if the heavens were in support of what
POV: Alexander The last thing on my mind was getting married. I wasn’t interested in women and the fact that most of the women I have ever met, were just after my wealth, tops the cherry on the cake. Perks of being the most eligible bachelor in Edinburgh. As a meticulous and calculated person, I really despise getting into unexpected situations like getting married to someone whom I have never met, on a random Friday night. It felt as if I was being obliged on what to do and I really despised that. My mom can be so unreasonable at times. I walked through the lobby, ignoring the polite bows from the staff as I made a beeline for the private elevator. The few shots I had taken were playing tricks with my head and without my glasses, everything was a mess. The elevator dropped me off at the last floor of the building and I found my way out. I was headed to my suité when a slender figure behind a slightly ajar door caught my attention but I couldn't
POV: Audrey The sinister scene before me made reflex tears stream down my tearline, ruining my mascara. I felt like my world was crumbling before me. Wanted to speak but I didn't know which felt heavier—my lips or my heart. Breathing suddenly felt like a crime. My parents stormed in immediately. Turning to my mom, I yelled, “Mom!!” My knuckles turned white from how hard i gripped my ruffle skirt. “This is some kind of prank right?” I inquired but my mom rushed past me into the bathroom. Crouching down slowly, she lifted Jimmie from the bathtub into a sitting position and touched her face lightly. Her face was elegantly dolled up and glistened in fine beads of sweat, her hair was packed into a loose messy bun, her locket sat prettily on her slender neck and, her blue sundress was stained at the waist hem, from the hairpin driven into her lower abdomen. “My poor child!” “Who could have done this to you!” my mom sobbed, tears streaming down her cheeks. My
