Jessica POV I looked at Marly, “It cannot be,” I commented as I considered the potential. “He would have been able to destroy Cole and I long before this point,” I noted, as we all remembered those early days of me leaving with Cole. “No, it is not possible,” I reaffirmed. I looked at everyone, “The next part is important. I need to enter the pack house. I need you all to stay out here so I can focus on what needs to be done,” I stated. “Not a fucking chance,” Cole replied angrily. “I will not be able to focus with you there,” I admitted. “I will not let you go anywhere without backup,” Cole stated. “I can go with her," Marly suggested. “Not a fucking chance,” Carson stated, quoting Cole. Marly looked at Carson, “You cannot keep my in a bubble all the time,” she commented. “I can damn well do my best,” Carson said, trying to shut Marly down. I held my hand up, “No more; I need to enter th
Jessica POV We pushed forward, listening to the fading screams of Susan. I did not know if she was being taken further from us or dying as a result of whatever was happening to her. We were on the last barrier when I saw a flash pass in front of my eyes. “What the hell was that?” I questioned. “I did not see anything,” the others had responded. I continued to scan the area before I refocused on the task at hand. Cole and I had worked effortlessly at removing the previous obstacles, but this one was more challenging. We had to take our time, and work together in removing pieces. “Okay, this is the final piece,” I cautioned, as I moved forward to remove it. I slowly dismantled the barely visible wiring. If we had crossed thorugh this barrier, we would have lost limbs based on the strategic placement of each item creating the barrier. As the last came undone, I held my breath, hoping there was
Jessica POV I ran into Cole’s open arms, almost toppling us both over. He held onto me tightly. “I was so scared,” I said, simply gripping his body to mine. “How come I could not connect with you?” I questioned, leaning back to look at him. “Carson and I agreed to close the connection to protect you both,” he shared. “What?!?” I exclaimed confused by their decision. “You would have been distracted worrying about what we were doing or fighting against,” he continued. I had to pause and reflect on his words. He was right. I would have been distracted, knowing he was fighting to get to us. I simply grabbed onto him again. “Good work,” he noted, referring to the dead men he had encountered along the way. “It was a challenge, but this last beast is going to be the death of me,” I shared trying to lighten the mood. Cole pushed me back, “Do not even joke about that,” he said softly. I acknowledg
Jessica POV Marly and I had been walking for half an hour now. We had to dismantle traps along the way. Traps that would have triggered debilitating results. “How much longer?" Marly muttered as we had encountered yet another trap. “Not much longer, I hope,” I replied. It was getting frustrating and a bit exhausting to have to continually be watching for any threats. We heard a chuckle, which sounded like it was coming from behind us. “Getting tired, ladies?” the voice taunted. I shook my head to Marly, “Do not engage,” I said through our mind-link. Marly nodded as we continued to focus on the task at hand. “Trying to ignore me ladies? I can make this easier or harder. The choice is yours,” the voice stated, amusement lacing their words. I did not respond, once again choosing to focus on this trap. It was more intricate than the last few, indicating it had more magic woven into the thread
Jessica POV “How did you get here?” I asked through our mind-link. “Let’s just say I snuck a ride,” Marly chuckled, as I smiled inside. I hated that she was here, yet I was relieved. “Carson?” I questioned. “He does not know yet. Let’s just say what he does not know, won’t hurt him,” she responded. I respected Marly and I knew she was doing what she had intended to do all along. “Well ladies, are you finished catching up?” the man in front of us asked. I looked at him with a glare, “We have always been ready,” I responded. You could see the look of fear on the beast’s face. He was shaken that Marly was here. I could feel the tension rise around us. “Let’s get this party started,” he commented as he tossed a lightning bolt at Marly. Before I could respond, Marly had already deflected the threat. It fell to the ground just before it reached her. “Is that all you got?” Marly taunted as she
Jessica POV I ran to where Cole was still lying unconscious. Carson was right behind me. “Cole?” I called out, waiting for him to respond. I saw no movement behind his eyelids and started to fear for him. I immediately started to scan Cole’s body looking for the damage. My heart stuttered as I realized his back had been broken. And he had struck his head upon impact. “Cole?” I called out frantically through our mind-link. Again, I heard nothing in response but immediately I looked for ways I could heal him. I knew it was risky, but I would not leave Cole vulnerable to our next challenge. I moved towards his spine first. I could see it had fractured in various spots. If a human surgeon were to try and heal Cole, I am not sure they would have been able to do so. This was a debilitating injury, even for a wolf. I worked hard to string together the broken bone fragments, carefully stitching each piece together be
Cole POV I had debriefed Carson on the situation. He would also be punishing the two guards who had decided what the pack needed. The pack only was as strong as its leadership. If someone swayed or took it upon themselves to exact justice, well-intentioned or not, it could n
Cole POV I ushered in the guards, as Jessica sat off to the side of my desk. I wanted her to be present, to understand the importance of our role within the pack. And I wanted pack members to understand how important Jessica was to me. As the two guards took their seats, I
Cole POV I looked to Jessica in awe, as she looked completely shaken up. Carson had already moved towards Marly and Everly, checking them both over. “The wolf never got near us,” Marly stated, smiling at Jessica. Jessica stood shaking in my arms. Likely adrenalin racing th
Cole POV I watched helplessly as Jessica panted through her shift. “What did you say?” she asked me. “I did not say anything?” I responded, hopeful that she might be hearing from her wolf. “Her wolf is starting to return,” Gunner, my wolf, stated excitedly.
