Jessica POV We were sitting once again with my grandmother. “Who are they?” I asked, getting to the point. “Who are you talking about?” she responded, looking tired for the first time since I had met her. “The people involved with taking your daughter. The people involved in the Wolf Council, with wanting to take over and use me to help them do so,” I offered. My grandmother paused for a moment, considering my question before recognition crossed her face. “You found her?” she questioned, holding her breath. I looked to Cole. We had no intention of telling her we had found my mother. We wanted to hold that information until the end of our discussion. “I need to see her. I need to be with her,” my grandmother exclaimed, trying to free herself from the silver cuffs, holding her to the table. “NO! You do not get to call the shots. You will answer the questions and then we will decide if you will see her or not,”
Cole POV I had watched Jessica struggling the past weeks. Dealing with training, pack attacks, and more. She was reaching a breaking point, and I did not know how to help her. With the return of her mother, I did not know how much more she could try and process. “The doctors will look after her,” I promised, as I scooped her mother up gently in my arms. She murmured in pain but seemed to have become accustomed to the discomfort. “I have got you,” I murmured softly, as her mother remained tense in my arms. “Jessica,” she rasped out. Jessica moved forward to stand beside us. “I am here,” she replied. “I am sorry,” she rasped, coughing and allowing us to hear a rattle in her chest. “We need to get her to the pack hospital,” I murmured to Jessica. Her mother’s body tensed in my arms, “No more tests,” she whined. I looked at her confused, while Jessica stepped closer to her. “They will make you
Jessica POV “What the hell are you doing here?” I demanded as I stared at the man in front of me. “You do not think I would miss the reunion, do you?” my father inquired with a smirk. “How did you get released?” I questioned, as I tried to calm my racing heart. I knew I was stronger now, but I also knew I could not stop the paralysis I felt in his presence. The memories of years of abuse were still top of mind. At any moment everything could be taken away from me. “It was a matter of being in the right place at the right time,” my father shared. “I doubt it was that; more like who did you bribe?” I questioned. He smiled at me; that sick twisted smile he always shared before he beat me or had someone do it for him. “I hear your talents have come through,” he commented, as he turned to walk further into the room. I cautiously took a step forward, scanning the room. I could see rogues surroundi
Jessica POV I knew we were taking a chance, but after a lengthy discussion with Carson and Marly, it was agreed we would move forward and go to the location my grandmother had drawn out for us. I looked to Cole as we prepared to leave the packhouse. “Last chance; you can totally back out,” I suggested to him. He looked at me incredulously. “Are you still trying to get rid of me?” he asked with a frown. “I am trying to protect you. To protect this pack. To protect everyone from what might be a set up,” I admitted. “I think we both can agree this is a set-up of some kind,” Cole commented as we excited the building. “What?” I asked, pausing my step. He stopped and turned to look at me, “We cannot trust anything your grandmother tells us. For all we know, your mother is not even alive,” Cole stated. I paused for a moment, processing his comment. “If she is not alive,” I started to say when he
Jessica POV We had made our way to the holding cells and had entered the building, hearing the screams of my grandmother’s outrage. As we approached her cell, she quieted down, watching as we opened the door and entered. The cell door slammed behind us, as we moved further into the room. “You have finally come to your senses,” my grandmother stated. “No, we have come for answers,” I replied, as she watched me from her seat across the table. She had been cuffed to the table so she could not move and anything she might have as powers or talents would be stifled. “What do you want to know? That your mother has been suffering while you have prioritized this pack?” she responded bitterly. “This pack is my family,” I stated. “Your family is being held hostage. Being tortured,” she conveyed. As if reminding me this was not my family. “Where is she?” I questioned. The woman sitting across from me
Jessica POV Having had enough of my grandmother, Cole had her taken to the holding cells. She screamed in outrage the entire way, but I did not care. She was a distraction that I did not need. “We need to discuss what we learned with Carson,” Cole said to me. I knew he was right. We needed to be prepared, and this was the first hint we had gotten as to why they were staggering their attacks. We entered the pack house and went directly to Carson’s office. Not surprisingly, Marly was already there with Everly in her stroller. “How is she?” I asked Marly, as we took our seats. Marly smiled, “She is great. It was a big adventure for her,” Marly shared. I smiled; Everly was adorable and I could only imagine what it would be like to have my own little piece of Cole and me. Whoa. Where did that thought come from, I wondered. “What the hell was that attack?” Carson questioned. I cleared my thro
Jessica POV How could I have expected things to be different. I was someone everybody ignored. I knew in my heart that Cole was not the father of that pup. Yet he would not believe me after I repeatedly told him the truth. I do not know how I know, but something smelled wr
Cole POV I had debriefed Carson on the situation. He would also be punishing the two guards who had decided what the pack needed. The pack only was as strong as its leadership. If someone swayed or took it upon themselves to exact justice, well-intentioned or not, it could n
Cole POV I ushered in the guards, as Jessica sat off to the side of my desk. I wanted her to be present, to understand the importance of our role within the pack. And I wanted pack members to understand how important Jessica was to me. As the two guards took their seats, I
Cole POV I looked to Jessica in awe, as she looked completely shaken up. Carson had already moved towards Marly and Everly, checking them both over. “The wolf never got near us,” Marly stated, smiling at Jessica. Jessica stood shaking in my arms. Likely adrenalin racing th
