Chapter 2

Author: Little Z
He pulled out a check and handed it to me.

It was ridiculous. Almost funny.

I stayed polite. No scene.

"Mr. Patterson, you've got it wrong. These cufflinks aren't for you."

Gloria scoffed, eyes rolling. "Robyn, stop the act. Evan and I know your family's going bankrupt. That's why your parents rushed to marry you into his family. Now that Evan's offering money, take it. Be grateful.

"One thing though—we're getting married soon. You're not planning to be his side chick, are you?"

Evan cut in. "Leaving you at the altar was my mistake. But love is love—I never loved you. Eight years or eighty, it won't change.

"If the money's not enough, I'll add another hundred grand. Call it compensation for what I did to you."

They talked over me.

Like I wasn't even there.

Then Evan pulled out his phone, tapped a few times—and froze.

"You deleted me?"

***

I didn't get why he was freaking out.

Isn't a clean breakup supposed to mean you're basically dead to each other? Why keep an ex saved at all?

And Mia's dad—Adrian Ainsworth—might look calm and untouchable, but he's insanely jealous.

If he ever found out I still had my ex-fiancé's number, he'd make sure I never slept again. I could kiss my waist goodbye.

I said, "Didn't you say it yourself? You wanted nothing to do with me ever again."

Evan's face darkened. His lips twitched, like he had something to say. He didn't. He reached for his checkbook instead.

I stopped him. "Mr. Patterson, don't. We ended things clean. I don't need hush money. And like I said—the cufflinks weren't for you."

He snapped the checkbook shut. Loud. Final. His voice went cold. "Robyn Radcliffe, don't push your luck. If it weren't for our families' history, you think I'd even spare you a glance?

"My birthday's tomorrow. Today, you bid on those cufflinks—right in front of me. If they weren't for me, then who? Don't tell me your new boyfriend just HAPPENS to share my birthday."

I froze.

Adrian's birthday is one day after his. Dead close.

But to Evan and Gloria, my silence screamed guilt.

"Some people still think they're heiresses," Gloria sneered. "But once you fall, you're nothing."

She'd forgotten—back when everyone mocked her as a country bumpkin, I was the one who stood up for her.

Evan and I were barely childhood friends. Gloria was different. Poor. Sponsored by his family.

Because of that, Evan's parents never approved of her. She knew it too. So when his mother offered her half a million to study abroad, she took it. No hesitation.

I never told Evan the truth. I stayed. Through all of it.

I knew love couldn't be forced. I never expected him to love me back.

He was the one who insisted on marriage. Told both families himself.

Before the wedding, I asked him—seriously—if he was sure.

We could delay it. Cancel it.

He held me and said, "Robyn, I've thought it through. My parents are right. We're the best match."

Not love. A match.

And even that was enough for me.

I thought if I tried hard enough, "a good match" might turn into love.

Then Gloria's accident happened.

And he didn't care about me. Or the child I was carrying.

He drove us off the cliff.

"Robyn, let's get back together!"That actually stunned me.Evan's shamelessness officially broke new ground.I stepped back, frowning. "Did you scramble your brain when you dragged us off that cliff? Or did you forget what you said that day?"Pain flickered across his face. He dropped his voice. "I'm sorry, Robyn. I was wrong. I thought I loved Gloria, but once I was actually with her, I realized I didn't. If I had, we'd be married by now."You might not believe this, but I waited. Eight years. Waiting for you to come back. If you had, I would've dropped everything."So let's start over. This time, I'll give you everything. I won't let you get hurt again."I couldn't hold it in— I slapped him."Evan, don't disgust me. Not just me—even our unborn child would never give you a second chance."I looked straight at him. "Let me be clear one last time. The moment you dragged me and our baby to die with you, I stopped loving you. The only man I love now is my husband."So do us bot

They never laid a hand on me. But they just stood there and watched. The auction manager who'd threatened to throw me out was shaking, barely breathing.Adrian's gaze passed him and landed on me. His voice softened. "Babe, it's late. Mia's probably hungry. Let's go home."Evan ignored Gloria tugging at him and followed after me. Like he had more to say—until Adrian shot him a look. He stopped cold.Back home, after dinner and putting Mia to bed, Adrian pinned me to the mattress."Babe," he said, annoyed, "I look away for one second and you run into your ex-fiancé? Totally killed my mood. Maybe I should just lock you up at home."I sighed, half amused. "You're so jealous, Mia can probably smell it from her room. Running into Evan was a total coincidence. I was only there for the sapphire cufflinks—I thought they'd look good on you."Adrian softened, but still grumbled. "Don't think you're off the hook. If you ever meet Evan behind my back, don't expect to walk the next day.""Re

I didn't stop. "My husband's a thousand times better than you. I'm not blind. Why would I want you when I have him?"Evan's face went dark. He opened his mouth—Gloria snapped first. "Evan, I'm your fiancée now. Let's go home."He didn't move. She felt the stares. Her face burned red.Nowhere to dump it, she shot me a glare—pure resentment. No filter. Then Adrian cut in, ice-cold. "Mr. Patterson, Robyn is my wife. There's no undo button for regret. Or are you really trying to steal her in front of me?"Evan went pale. He rushed to explain. "Mr. Ainsworth, no—this isn't that. You've misunderstood. I just... I just—"I cut him off. "Whatever we had is over. We both have families now. We shouldn't cross paths again."***My decisiveness froze Evan.Maybe in his head, I was still that girl—pathetic, obsessed, waiting on him.He stared, eyes red. "Did you really forget us? You loved me. Are you still mad at me?"Adrian's expression iced over. He laughed—short, sharp. "Are you d

Adrian cut through the crowd and came straight to me.Mia spotted him and lit up. "Daddy!"He brushed her hair and took her from my arms like it was instinct."Did you listen to Mommy?"She glanced at me, then nodded. "I was good. I listened.""That's my girl." Then he kissed my forehead, right there, no hesitation. "Babe, thanks for today."Adrian never cared about showing affection in public.Thinking back, our marriage was messy from the start. He needed a wife to shut his family up. Evan nodded, eyes lit up. Hopeful. Greedy. "That's him. If we get a foot in with Ainsworth Corp, we go even higher."He smiled. "He's famous for spoiling his wife. Wonder who got that lucky."***While everyone was still buzzing, the auction manager rushed in with security, faces tight."Excuse me—has anyone seen a woman with a six-year-old girl?"The noise spiked. Someone connected the dots fast."You mean Mrs. Ainsworth and her daughter? I just saw a little girl in a princess dress near the kids' zone."That was all it took. The crowd surged toward the children's area—hungry, desperate.First one there might get a line into the Ainsworths.Evan and Gloria shoved ahead, not even glancing back.I stayed quiet. Followed from the back.Like I expected, I spotted Mia a few minutes later—still in her dress, climbing the play set like rules didn't exist.I walked past everyone and called up, "Come down."Her face lit up. Arms out."Carry me!"I stepped forward to lift her—
