Is Having a Child What Defines a Wife?

Is having a child what defines a wife? Was that truly the measure of a woman's worth, whether her body could fulfill the one expectation everyone had placed upon it from the moment she wore a wedding ring? Elena had entered her marriage believing that love would be enough to carry two people through every disappointment life could place before them.

Five years of marriage had stripped away every illusion she once held so tightly. Each passing month became another reminder that people were no longer interested in seeing Elena as a woman with dreams, kindness, intelligence, or a heart capable of unconditional love. None of those things mattered anymore.

Every family gathering turned into another quiet interrogation hidden behind forced smiles. Every celebration became another opportunity for relatives to ask the same question while pretending they were simply concerned. Friends who once laughed beside her eventually began bringing their children around, unknowingly reminding her of everything she could not give

The storm came down in sheets over Alpha Manor, and Elena knelt in the mud at the front gates, spine straight, hands folded in her lap like a woman praying. She wasn't being punished. No one had ordered her here. She had chosen to wait, the way she had chosen to wait every night for the last two months, for the sound of her husband's car coming up the drive.

Two guards stood just inside the gate, sheltered under the stone archway, watching her.

"That's the Alpha's wife," one murmured.

"Still out here? It's been six hours."

"How pathetic," the other said, not bothering to lower his voice. "A Luna, kneeling in the mud for a man who isn't even coming home."

Elena didn't flinch. She had stopped flinching at whispers a long time ago. She had simply become something the pack talked about instead of someone they spoke to.

She hadn't always been this. Five years ago she had walked into this manor as the most envied woman in the territory, beautiful, composed and respected. Wolves used to bow their heads when she passed, not out of duty but respect. She remembered what it felt like to be loved. She remembered Damian's hand at the small of her back, steering her through a room like she was something worth showing off.

Then the years passed. No child came. And somewhere in that silence, the whole pack decided who was to blame.

By morning, the humiliations had a rhythm to them, the way pain does when it becomes routine.

At breakfast, the servants set a plate in front of Vivian first, warm bread, fresh fruit, the good tea, while Elena's cup sat empty until someone remembered, eventually, to fill it.

"Good morning," Elena said to Damian, from across the long table.

He didn't look up from his phone. "Is the western border patrol schedule finalized?"

"Damian. I said good morning."

"I heard you." He still didn't look up.

Later that afternoon, he walked into the dining hall with Vivian's hand in his, laughing at something she'd said, and it took Elena a full three seconds to understand that the emerald pendant swinging from Vivian's throat was the one Damian's grandmother had given her on her wedding day.

"That necklace," Elena said quietly, when Damian finally passed close enough. "It was mine."

"It's just jewelry, Elena." His voice was flat, bored almost. "If you had given me an heir, maybe you'd still care about things like that. Do you understand how much shame you've brought this pack? Five years, and nothing."

He didn't shout; he simply said things like that and walked away. His tone was always full of despise and disdain, nothing like the man who claimed her as his mate. Sometimes, Elena wonders if this was Damian true self.

His mother was less restrained.

"Barren wolf," Marla spat, hurling a small glass bottle of fertility medicine across the room. It shattered against the wall behind Elena, amber liquid running down the plaster. "Do you know what the elders are saying about this family? About me? Five years, and you couldn't even manage one pup."

"I've done everything the healers asked," Elena said. "Every ritual. Every tea. Every —"

"And still nothing." Marla's lip curled. "Maybe some wolves simply aren't meant to be mothers."

The gathering hall was full the night everything ended, hundreds of pack members gathered for the monthly assembly.

Damian stood at the front, Elena beside him, as she had stood a hundred times before. Then he stepped forward, and his voice carried easily across the silent room.

"I've decided," he said, "to take a new Luna."

The applause started before Elena's mind had even finished processing the sentence.

Vivian walked onto the stage in white, radiant, already crying the practiced tears of a woman who had rehearsed this moment. Damian lifted the Luna necklace, the one that had sat against Elena's collarbone for five years, and fastened it around Vivian's throat instead.

Elena stood two feet away from him, in front of everyone, in front of a thousand wolves who had once bowed to her. And in that moment, she was nothing.

When she returned to her chambers that night, the room was empty. Her dresses, gone. Her jewelry box, gone. Even the wedding portrait that had hung above the fireplace for five years had been taken down, leaving only a pale rectangle on the wall where it used to be.

On the bed, where her pillow should have been, sat a single folder.

Divorce papers.

Elena sat on the edge of the stripped mattress, the rain still falling outside the window, and for the first time in five years, she did not cry.

The room prepared for Elena overlooked the silver skyline of Lyral City, the heart of the Lycan Kingdom, where towering structures of stone and glass stood beneath the watch of the royal palace. It was one of the finest guest chambers within the eastern wing.None of it mattered. The moment Isaac left the room to give her space, Elena climbed off the bed without making a sound. She ignored the thick mattress, the clean blankets, and the pillows waiting for her. Instead, she crossed the room on unsteady feet until she reached the farthest corner. There, she slowly lowered herself onto the floor, drew her knees tightly against her chest, wrapped both arms around them, and bowed her head. That was where Isaac found her an hour later. He stood in the doorway for several long moments before quietly walking over and crouching several feet away, careful not to invade what little sense of safety she seemed to have found."Elena," he called softly. Her shoulders stiffened."You don't have to s

Silence swallowed the auction hall. The auctioneer squinted toward the him, certain he'd misheard. "I — I'm sorry sir, did you say —""Are you deaf?" The voice was quiet, but the absolute dominance from it was clear. "I said ten billion.""Oh — oh, yes, of course!" The auctioneer's gavel trembled in his hand. "Ten billion, going once — going twice — sold! Sold to the gentleman at the back!"A ripple of stunned murmuring broke across the room. But the sum alone was enough to make the auction manager scramble down from his podium, bowing so deeply his forehead nearly grazed his own knees."Sir, you understand, of course, that this is simply a — a worthless slave," he stammered, forcing an oily smile. "Once purchased, there are no returns, no refunds, no—"He didn't finish the sentence.Something in the air had shifted, a pressure settling over the room. The manager's own wolf recoiled inside him, some primal instinct screaming at him to stop talking, to back away, to survive. He felt it

The whip came before Elena could even process the spit drying on her cheek.A man stepped out from behind Mrs. Baltimore, tall, broad with a scar across his lips, a coil of black leather already uncurling from his hand. The first crack landed across her back, a sharp wet snap that stole the air from her lungs before the pain even registered. The second came a heartbeat later, and this time Elena's scream tore out of her before she could stop it, her whole body curling forward against the stone.Mrs. Baltimore crouched down in front of her, gripping Elena's chin with ringed fingers hard enough to bruise, forcing her face up."There she is," Mrs. Baltimore cooed, mockingly. "The famous Luna. Screaming just like the rest of them." She spat again, this time square on Elena's split lip, and rose with a grunt, smoothing her golden silk. The door opened before Elena could gather herself off the floor.A worker hurried in, bowing so low his forehead nearly touched the ground. "Mrs. Baltimore

The pen sat on top of the papers like a blade waiting to fall.Elena hadn't touched it. She had been sitting at the edge of the stripped bed for what felt like hours when Damian finally walked in, still dressed for the celebration downstairs, still smelling faintly of Vivian's perfume." Have you signed," he said.He remained standing instead of taking the chair across from her, his arms folded firmly over his chest as though creating an unbreakable wall between them. The warmth that had once existed in his eyes had disappeared completely. The instant their gazes met, Elena saw nothing but cold disdain staring back at her, the kind that made it painfully clear he no longer saw her as his wife, only as a burden he wanted removed from his life."Did you ever love me?" she mustered the courage to ask, maybe some silver hope. “Tell me straight Damian, why choose me? Why tell me am your mate and that you would only choose me? Was that all a lie?”He looked away first, then sighed.“Love yo
