Ten billion dollars stared right back at me,
I blinked once, then gently rubbed my eyes. I checked the name, then the amount, as if it might change.
“Is this…?”
My words trailed off as Anna cut in
“That’s not all, eighty percent shares and other assets including the estate are yours now.” She added
“I'm rich.. no,” I let out a breathless laugh
“I'm disgustingly rich”
Anna and Butler Brooks' lips parted softly, eyes crinkling at the corners making the room feel warmer.
“Miss Ava” Anna called
“You will need to recover first, then you claim everything and we would like to know what you want to do about Desmond.”
I smirked, the kind that seems dangerous
“Leave that to me, I will handle it.”
A cough broke the moment, it was the doctor's. My eyes glanced at him, and I blinked twice.
“Ava, I need to check your vitals and schedule you for surgery months from now.”
I nodded gently
Soon Butler Brooks and Anna left.
“Doctor Lucas,” I called
His eyes shone like electricity down my spine. How did I not see a man like him?
“I..I just wanted to say thank you for saving me but I’d like to know why you saved me.”
“Oh!”
“About that,” he stared into space, scratching his head as if he were searching for the right answers.
“I just did what I swore to do, save lives” he chuckles, “but to be honest, no one deserves to die like that and by the way, call me Lucas.”
The corners of my lips widened, something I can describe as a smile. Warmth filled the room and for a moment everything felt lighter.
Then the sharp ring of his phone cracked the silence.
He answered
“Speak” he said
Taking a few steps away from me. I turned to the other side acting sleepy.
My eyes sharpened when I heard the name Parker group.
Curiosity stirred within me
When the call ended, he walked up to me.
“Lucas, I…” I hesitated.
“I don’t mean to eavesdrop but did you mention Parker Group? as in the Desmond Parker Group?”
He nodded.
“Your ex-husband?”
I looked away
“Do you mind telling me how it all began?”
I took a deep breath and stared into space.
My lips parted gently and I began
Seven years ago!
“My Dad called me to tell me about an engagement with a family friend's heir. In his words,”
“Just take a look at his picture Ava and meet him once”
“I coldly said no and walked out.”
“His voice roared behind me but I didn't care. I wasn't ready for a marriage especially because it felt like a business deal so I came up with what I thought was a brilliant idea.”
A faint smile touched my lips
“I thought it was the best idea at the time.”
“One day, I brought in a man who happened to save me when I was a kid in a swimming pool.”
“Swimming pool?,” Lucas repeated, his voice quieter now.
I nodded slowly
“I didn't see his face but I remembered one thing”
“A rare gold necklace”
Lucas went still, something flickered across his face like he had seen it before.
“Years later when I saw Desmond,” I let out a short bitter laugh, “he was wearing that exact necklace so I married him.
Lucas fingers tightened slightly at his side, his gaze fell on me.
“And you're sure…it was him?” he asked
Silence filled the room
Then I nod slightly.
“ In order to repay him and put an end to my parents' request I thought marrying him was the best choice but I was wrong.”
“When I took Desmond to my Mansion, he was happy, loving and respectful.”
“My Dad's jaw tightened seeing that the person I introduced as my husband, wasn't the person he wanted.”
“He threatened me after that day, froze my accounts just so I backed down but all those acts only pushed me into marrying Desmond.”
“Little did I know that Desmond was in for my money and never loved me.”
“ After we got married, my father reluctantly gave me a few shares. Not long after, my mother died in a car crash and the shock pushed my father into a coma. He never woke up.”
“Suddenly the mansion felt empty, accounts frozen, the calls stopped and everything that was once mine was gone.”
“I did everything in secret to elevate Desmond through my design skills but instead of a reward, I got a divorce, betrayal, and nearly died. My third wedding anniversary was the night everything went wrong in my life because I found out the truth and wanted to fight back.”
By the time I finished, tears welled up in my eyes, and I felt a gentle pat on my shoulder. Then those comforting words came, ones I haven't heard in a while.
“Ava, I won't let anyone hurt you again.” His voice was firm and his hands gently wiped off the tears that rolled down my face.
Present Day!
Lucas took a deep breath, Ava that night was a night that marked a new beginning.
I grinned brightly then he continued
“There’s a gala tonight. Desmond is signing a contract with the Cohen group.”
My jaw tightened
After all these years he still ends up getting what he wants. I couldn’t say a word even though I wished him all the miserable things in life for the pain he caused me.
Then a knock on the door cracked the silence.
“Boss” a young man who happened to be very polite and respectful. I can’t mistake him for another person than a secretary.
“Martin, is everything set for tonight?” Lucas asked
Martin gave a nod and handed him a file.
His eyes shone as he flipped through the pages.
Desmond's POVI knew things were not the way they used to be. Grace and I had a lot going on, even before we got married. We still chose each other but this time it felt different. She was right in front of me yet I wasn’t satisfied. After the drama at the restaurant, all I thought about was how to appease my wife but it wasn’t working. The entire time my mind drifted to Morgana. Such beauty, gorgeousness. Oh, how I wish she were the one lying naked on my bed. I had Grace panting just beneath me minutes ago. Her hands still lying on my chest like she was trying to stake her claim. The room smelled of sex and expensive perfume, the kind she made me buy.Yet Morgana was the only thing on my mind.It was intense. I shut my eyes trying to erase her image, especially the unique smile she always wears and the way her lips curve each time a word is spoken. I can swear I hadn’t met someone like her in years. The curviness of her body and how she carries herself when walking. If this was
Ava’s POVOMG!My eyes widened immediately as I stood in front of Desmond. He had already picked it up, he opened the wallet but then I snatched it from his hand. “That's mine,” I said softly.“Oh uhm, I… I” he stuttered, “I thought you left already,” Oh no Desmond, I didn't. In fact, I heard everything you said about me. I wanted to say that but instead I blinked once before answering. “Yes I had,” I paused, “but I realized I forgot my wallet so I came back immediately.”“Oh okay, I found it beneath the table” he said looking at the table.“Thank you,” I said, finally trying to act grateful, but I wasn't. I wish I could punch him in the face for all the terrible things he did to me. Gosh, I hated him so much.Grace sat down staring at me as if the world depended on that gaze. “So you didn't hear anything,” she said finally. I shook my head like a little puppy before answering, “No, I just arrived here.”I lied. “Alright, Morgana, we were about to leave,” Grace said, standing on
Ava's POVThe keyIt was in my possession the entire day, yet I sat in front of them and I never knew they wanted it so badly. What exactly is in that safe my father mentioned? I stood still and leaned against the wall in order not to be seen. “We don't know who has it,” Grace said. Wait a minute, so Grace knows about it too. I inhaled slowly, and my ears sharpened.“We have more pressing issues,” Mia cut in, changing the subject. What could be more pressing than the key to them?Desmond nodded his head in agreement with his mother. “Parker Group isn't the way it used to be,” he continued, “we don't have investors anymore, the only person backing us is the Adams Foundation.”Right, Adams Foundation. I smirked and let a faint smile rest on my lips. “I guess you still haven't found SG, “ Mia said softly.Desmond shook his head, “Sometimes I wish Ava was still alive.”“Careful of what you wish for, Desmond.” Grace barked, “I'm right here.”“Relax babe, I meant she would know where SG
Ava's POVOur eyes locked for a moment. He blinked once, twice. Desmond Parker. My ex-husband, the man behind my death and other things I'm yet to find out. He stood in front of me in a suit that clung to his lean frame, hands slightly resting on my back. For a minute, neither of us spoke a word until Mia broke the silence. “Do you two know each other?”Desmond immediately removed his hand from my back. I straightened immediately, “Yes.” I looked at Grace while talking, “Grace has told me a lot about him and I'm delighted to finally meet him.” Her eyes widened, I'm sure she must have wondered about the time she told me such a thing. But I stretched forth my hand with a smile on my face, for a handshake with him. “Morgana, nice meeting you.” Desmond couldn't say a word, he just obeyed like a dog who listens to its owner. “Desmond Parker,” he said, giving me a handshake as well. “Great,” Mia interrupted.I took one more sip of wine before standing on my feet. “I will take my leav
Ava's POV “Grace?” The voice repeated so I turned fully and smiled.Mia ParkerMy biggest nightmare and ex-mother-in-law. The one person who made me shake whenever she spoke to me. I remember feeling as though the floor should open for me to fall inside one time. And today she stood in front of me, looking as elegant as ever but the only difference was that she didn't recognize me. But I did. I smirked, slightly this time.“Mother,” Grace said, trying to fake a smile. Mia walked into our space, “What are you doing in the restroom? We're supposed to have lunch in the restaurant.”Before Grace could respond, I cut in… “I will take my leave Grace , see you around.” My heels whispered against the floor as I headed toward the door. But Mia’s gaze fell on me. “Wait…” I froze mid-step.Oh my God! Did she recognize me?No, no, no, no, no, this can’t be happening. “And you are?” She asked softly.“Anna,” I turned facing her. She rolled her eyes. “Anna?” She repeated the name, “Never
Ava’s POVSilence filled the restroom, the kind that settles before chaos begins. The steady trickle of water from a leaking pipe was the only sound, setting the stage for the battle about to unfold.I turned toward her and smiled brightly. Her hands were shaking already, “What… you… Morgana.”“Did you forget how to speak?” My brow lifted slightly, “Well, hello to you too, Grace.” I said immediately and tightened my jaw.“Surprised to see me?,” I smiled awkwardly this time. But it didn't last long.I moved further to dry my hands, deliberately, and walked back to her. “You seem tense though, what’s the issue?”Grace realized she was holding the hem of her dress so tightly, so she laughed nervously. “You scared me. I.. I wasn’t expecting anyone.” She finally spoke.I nodded my head, “Is that why you can’t find the right words?” My tone was sharp. She paused, her shoulders already stiffened. Minutes later she opened her mouth, “I thought you travelled after the kidnap incident.” “Of c

CHAPTER ONEAva’s POVThe reflection from my mirror stared right back at me. All I could see was a shattered soul, one with emptiness inside.
