Nadia's POV

"Don't be silly. You always look pretty to me. You're still recovering, so don't overthink about it, OK?" Lucian's voice was incredibly gentle, carrying a deep, magnetic warmth and a sense of protection.

"Do you really mean that?" Abbie's soft, flirtatious voice drifted through the crack in the door, laced with the hopeful anticipation of someone who had survived a nightmare.

He answered without a second of hesitation. "Of course. I'll marry you, once you get better. I'll throw the grandest ceremony possible, so everyone in the pack will witness you becoming my Luna".

"Really?"

"Yes. Now, eat something. You need strength to restore your energy".

"Lucian, you're so good to me..."

I stood frozen outside the door. Those light, airy words felt like hammers smashing into my already shattered heart. A self-mocking smile touched my lips, my eyes reflecting an endless sorrow.

I didn't mean to eavesdrop, and there was no point in rubbing salt into my own wounds. But rather than pushing the door open and intruding, I believed that I should wait outside for now.

After the room went quiet, I gathered my strength and knocked on the door with my slightly trembling hand.

"Come in," a voice rang out, instantly shifting back to a cold, detached tone.

I pushed the door open and saw Lucian standing by her bed. He was still in yesterday's suit, his collar slightly disheveled, and there were faint shadows beneath his eyes. It was obvious that the proud Alpha had spent the entire night at the hospital by her side.

As he turned to look at me, his handsome face froze almost instantly. There was no warmth in those deep eyes, only a flicker of annoyance at being disturbed, as if I were some stranger who had wandered into the wrong room.

I gripped the clothes bag in my hand, my footsteps halted, keeping a safe distance from them.

"Hi, Nadia," Abbie spoke up weakly. She leaned against her pillows, a faint, apologetic smile on her pale face. "I'm so sorry to make you come all the way here in the morning..."

With that, I lowered my gaze.

Abbie was beautiful, the type that made you want to adore her. She was pale, her silky hair spilling over her shoulders; because she had been asleep for so long, she radiated a fragile, broken beauty. To any Alpha, that aura was a fatal lure for their protective instincts.

A breakfast tray sat before her with a bowl of warm chicken and mushroom soup—the easiest energy supplement for a werewolf with such a weak condition.

However, the rich smell of the chicken made me want to throw up.

A wave of intense nausea surged up my throat without warning. My wolf paced restlessly inside me. It was an extreme reaction from the Alpha pup in my womb toward external scents. I slammed my hand over my mouth, retching violently.

For a moment, the air in the room fell deathly silent.

Lucian's brow furrowed, his gaze traveling over me with confusion and irritation. "What's wrong with you? Bringing a bag of clothes over makes you that uncomfortable?"

Abbie bit her lower lip, her eyes instantly reddening as her voice trembled. "Do I look so bad that it makes you feel sick? Or... Are you still blaming me for taking up Lucian's time?"

I pressed a hand to my chest. Once I regained my breath, I took a steadying inhale and spoke flatly. "No. I probably didn't sleep well, and something I ate last night didn't sit right. Sorry about that."

Forcing my weak body forward, I held my breath as much as possible and set the bag on the nightstand. "Here are the clothes, and they're all brand new. Also, there's a calming energy crystal. I thought you might find it useful".

Abbie reached out to take it, her face lighting up with a surprised smile as she looked inside. "Nadia, you're so considerate! They are all my favorite styles, and they are all my size!"

Her favorite styles?

I looked at Lucian, a bitter, desolate smile tugging at my lips. It turned out that for the past year, the gorgeous dresses that appeared in the walk-in closet were all meant for Abbie. I was nothing more than a caretaker for her wardrobe.

Filled with self-ridicule, I straightened my spine and looked Lucian dead in the eye. "If you have a moment, can we discuss the arrangements following the Mate Bond Severance? "

"Nadia..." Abbie gasped, tears spilling over. "Are you mad at me? I know you're still Lucian's mate. I shouldn't have called him over last night just because I was scared, but I..."

She began to sob, her thin shoulders shaking violently. "I didn't want to disturb you two last night... But I have no family here. I only know Lucian... Please don't fight with him because of me..."

"Abbie, that's enough!" Lucian leaned over to stop her, his touch gentle as he wiped away her tears, his voice thick with worry. "The doctor said your spiritual core is unstable; you can't have these emotional outbursts. You need rest, OK?"

After Abbie stopped sobbing, he stood straight slowly. When he turned back to me, the concern in his eyes was gone, replaced by a judgmental look.

"Abbie hasn't recovered yet. She needs to rest. Do you not understand that?"

I stared at him in disbelief, my chest feeling as if it had been stuffed with cold iron. I had done nothing wrong, yet in his eyes, my very existence was a threat to Abbie.

I couldn't help but ask him in my mind, "Lucian, am I always the one to blame, no matter how hard I try?"

Lucian didn't push for answers. He figured the old man was just in a good mood and wanted to throw a few compliments his way, so he let it go.By 7:00 PM, Lucian arrived at Reid's villa. Before he stepped inside, the sound of laughter drifted through the air. As he crossed the foyer, the first one he saw was Nadia. Her face lit up with a genuine smile—the kind he rarely saw lately."As long as you and Lucian are doing well, I'm happy," Reid was saying, his eyes crinkling. "I think things are finally getting better."Devin nodded in agreement while Carlie worked in the kitchen, a rare treat."Lucian? Why are you just standing there?" Reid waved him over.As Lucian joined them, Reid poured him a cup of coffee. Lucian glanced at Nadia, then looked at his grandfather."Grandpa, I think Nadia's upset that I went public with the marriage. She won't even look me in the eye."Nadia stared at him, stunned. This side of Lucian was

"Alpha Lucian, it's getting worse," Andrew's voice crackled through the phone, clear enough for Nadia to hear every word."It's not just the rumors about Leo anymore. Someone released a statement claiming Luna Nadia is dating several guys at the same time."Nadia stared blankly at Lucian. The room fell into a heavy silence. She wanted to explain, but the words died in her throat.Lucian's brow furrowed at her silence."Nothing to say to me?" he asked."Would you even believe me?" she countered, her gaze turning stubborn as their eyes locked.Nadia called Leo. "Don't go out today, the paparazzi are at the gate.""Do you want me to say anything to them?" Leo asked, sounding groggy."No," she said firmly. "Anything you say now will just get twisted."Leo didn't like the idea, but knowing Lucian was involved, he eventually agreed.Later, Nadia stood outside Lucian's study, her hand trembling on the doorknob.

"I haven't got the chance to bring it up." Nadia breathed, her back pressed against the cold marble vanity."Haven't got the chance, or you don't want to?" Lucian countered, his towering frame casting a shadow over her.Nadia met his gaze, trying to keep her voice steady. "He said I don't have a boyfriend, and I don't. Right?""...""You're my mate, Lucian. Not my boyfriend. Isn't it?"Lucian went silent, his jaw tightening. The air in the small room grew thick with the heavy, musky scent of a provoked Alpha."You never intended to tell him," he growled, his eyes flashing with a predatory intensity that made Nadia flinch. "Answer me. What are you thinking?""It's just not the right time, OK?" she whispered, looking down."Why? It's simple. You're just choosing not to say it.""If that's what you believe, why even ask?""So, I'm right, huh?" he hissed."If that's what you want to hear..."Befor

"Why would she be upset?" Lucian countered. "What does the Gray Pine Pack even offer us? Sacrificing one insignificant project for the growth of our pack is nothing."After hanging up, Lucian stayed on the balcony, lighting a cigarette. His mind was flooded with images of Nadia and Leo at dinner. She looked so relaxed being next to him—a side of her Lucian had never seen before.A sharp agitation surged within him, a sense of crisis he couldn't quite name.As long as the mate bond wasn't severed, she belonged to him.Yet, things were shifting beyond his control...The next morning, Lucian was gone before Nadia got up.On her way to the office, Leo called."Free tonight? I'll join my father's friend's birthday party. Wanna be my plus one?" Leo said, mentioning he'd be leaving in a couple of days."So this whole trip was to settle your dad's old favors?" Nadia teased."Pretty much. Pick you up later? "

Leo gave a light smirk. "This is Nadia, my best friend. She's building her career here in the Silverstone Pack.""Your best friend?" Lucian repeated, his voice dropping into a dangerous, low rumble.Abbie's face drained of color as she cut a sharp look at Nadia.Nadia played it cool, acting like she and the Alpha were total strangers. She flashed a polite, empty smile. "Alpha Lucian, it's a pleasure.""The pleasure is mine," he replied, his gaze lingering on her.Dinner was a tense affair.Abbie clung to Lucian's arm, playing the doting partner while trying to charm Leo."It's an honor to meet you. We're practically in the same circle, you know?"Leo gave a polite nod but said nothing."Lucian invited you here for me. Well, I'm looking for a new hit," Abbie pushed, desperate for an opening. "I know you seldom write songs now, but just one song would be enough."Leo waited for her to finish before turning to Lucian."Is this what you wanted, Alpha?""I'm just making the introduction,"

"No, I don't. She was just too exhausted from last night, so I had to take the call for her."Kaleb went silent, the implication hitting him like a physical blow."Kaleb, Nadia is my mate. Stop being so damn attentive, or I won't be responsible for what happens next."Without waiting for a reply, Lucian hung up, his eyes cold as flint.Nadia didn't wake up until nine-thirty.She stretched, but the moment she saw her phone, she bolted upright.Multiple missed calls and texts from Leo filled the screen."Nadia, why aren't you picking up? Are you mad about what I said? Does this mean you're bailing on dinner tonight?"Nadia texted back, "Sorry, just woke up! Of course I'm coming.""Good. Don't worry about me today, I'll wander around on my own. See you tonight." Leo replied. After a quick breakfast, she drove to the Soul-Forge. The moment she stepped into her office, Cora followed her with a stack of drawings. "You l
