Caleb’s POV

The bells from the temple toll midnight, I close my eyes and look for my wolf in my mind. I feel him pacing. Impatient, stalking, waiting to pounce. His presence absorbs into place in my body like a broken yolk into a slice of bread. It soaks into my muscles. I already feel stronger. The distant sounds of people at the party are louder. Scents are stronger too, but especially Ainsley’s fruity raspberry and tangerine scent since she’s directly in front of me.

Luna Eva told me to let my wolf talk to me first. It shows him I’m not trying to smother his presence. I want to give him room to be my partner. Alpha Lucas explained how to brace myself to hold him back if he tries to overtake me. Thirty human form guards and twenty wolves are waiting to see if he does.

“Did you get rid of the wench?” He finally huffs at me.

“Wooooooow. That’s how you’re going to start things off between us?”

“Really? You can’t even answer a simple query?” He snarls. “You resort to derisive taunting?

  • Riley and The Riptide   Chapter 48

Ainsley’s POVIt feels like I’m dropping into a tall wave on a cheap foam board, but the drop isn’t leveling out. A warm wind is rushing past me, but there’s no ocean spray with it. I reach my hand out. I can’t feel the face of the wave or see the trough to know when to pull up. Everything is pitch black. The movement suddenly stops, but there’s no jerking movement. I should be falling forward, tumbling into water and trying to drive down so my board doesn’t hit me in the head. There is no landing. No churn of the water. No pressure in my ears. There is no actual movement. It’s almost like I have no body to react to it even if I did. Paragon said she needed me to step back for a moment. This can’t be what she meant. What’s happening to me? All my senses feel like they’ve disappeared, but they haven’t. They’re just misplaced somehow? Does that mean I’m dead? I can’t be dead. I would know if I were dead. Right? No, that can’t be right. I have to get out of whatever this place is. How t

  • Riley and The Riptide   Chapter 46

Ainsley's POVThe waxing gibbous moon is high in the sky above us just outside the training pavilion. It’s almost midnight, and there’s a warm breeze in the air. The smell of barbeque and the sound of music waft towards us. I hear people laughing and clapping from the party, waiting for Caleb and me to arrive. I look toward the patio of the packhouse. There are tiki torches and red, white, and blue decorations everywhere. Our birthday being on Fourth of July works out perfectly. Humans think our ‘country club’ is having its Independence Day celebration a night early.“You look beautiful.” Beckett gently drags his fingers over my jawline, bringing my attention back to him.“Thanks.” I lean into his touch. “I’m kind of nervous.”“No, you don’t need to be.” He gives me a confident nod. “You’ll be stronger at midnight, and you’re expecting Paragon to wake up this time. You’re gonna be fine. And if you’re not, you’ve got half the pack guards to stop Paragon before she can cause any damage.

TW: Implied drug use and child abuseBeckett’s POV***FLASHBACK***“Listen, if you gotta pup here, I’m not bringing shit to you anymore. You’ll have to come to me.” The man in a suit says to Papa. “I’m a lotta things, but none of those need to have little kids involved.”“He’s not a problem, Dario.” Papa looks at me then at the man and lowers his voice. “Trust me. He’s not a problem.”“This is the last time Yu-jun.” The man holds up a brown lunch bag. Papa gives him money, and the man gives him the lunch bag.Papa slams the door closed and gives me a mean look. I try to back up to the wall, but it’s already behind me, so I squat down. Maybe he won’t hit me if I’m small enough.“Bokyun, go to your room!” He raises his hand to hit me.“Yu-jun, was there a delivery?” Mama walks in, and Papa hides how angry he is.“Yes, but this stupid pup will be the end of it.” He gives me an angry look.Mama looks at me. I don’t think she knew I was there. Her hair is messy, and she’s still in her paja

  • Riley and The Riptide   Chapter 44

Ainsley's POV“You’re sure you felt nothing when Caleb’s wolf took over?” Luna Eva checks my pulse.“That’s kinda the problem. I can usually feel how he’s feeling at least low level, ya know? And when his wolf came forward, it was like he was totally gone. It kind of scared me.”“Caleb, is that how it felt when Ainsley’s wolf presented herself? Like she was gone?” Dara presses her hands to the sides of his throat. “Open your mouth.”“Yeah. It was like one second she was there, the next… a light switch flipped off.” He opens his mouth for her to look in.“Did he speak to you?” Dara rolls back on her stool and puts her stethoscope to his chest. “Alpha Nick said he fought against the order to give his name.”I feel a stir of his emotions. Fuck off. That’s how he feels. It’s Caleb’s default. It’s what he says when he doesn’t want anyone in his business. He’s hiding something he doesn’t want even me to know.“What’s wrong, Cal?” I murmur into his mind.He looks out the window of the exam r

  • Riley and The Riptide   Chapter 43

Ainsley's POV“Kayla and I have done a ton of research.” Emily jogs next to me, short of breath from the five mile ‘warm up’ Grandpa ordered for this morning’s training. “We haven’t found any image matches on the gate. Impressive library though. Are you sure you don’t want to tell your mom or the Alpha? Or the Grands at least?”“No, Caleb and I both agree that we want to wait until our wolves look and see if they recognize it before we say anything.” I huff as we come out of the treeline toward the training pavilion. “Besides, we need to focus on the fact that Gavin is going to be here this afternoon. My nerves are so frayed, one jump scare and I’ll shit my pants.”“Watch your language.” She hisses. “Try to ignore him. Caleb told me Alpha Lucas has a plan to stop Gavin if he tries anything.”“Yeah, that’s what he-”“GIRLS, do we need another three miles?” Grandpa hollers when he sees us chatting.“No, Alpha!” We yell and run faster.Charlotte is already at the pavilion. Weird. I didn’
