POV: AVA

Before I could say anything else, he dropped to one knee and took my injured hand, he turned it over to inspect the cuts across my palm before checking the leg I'd been limping on since leaving the training pit.

I couldn’t help staring at him. The almighty Rogue King was actually kneeling in the middle of the corridor, tending to my scrapes like this was a perfectly normal thing for him to be doing.

“I’m fine,” I said, trying to pull my hand back. “I can handle it myself.”

He ignored the protest and reached into the leather pouch at his side. A small vial came out first, followed by a clean cloth, and he poured some of the liquid onto it before pressing it against my palm.

The sting made me suck in a sharp breath. “You could’ve warned me.”

Darius kept cleaning the cut, apparently deciding my complaints weren’t worth answering. When he finished with my hand, he moved to my leg and carefully checked the bruising before wrapping it.

“I said I’m fine,” I muttered, although I didn’t try pulling away again.

He gave me a look that made it obvious he’d heard me, then packed the supplies back into the pouch and rose to his feet. “My study.”

“Why?”

“I need to finish treating the injury.”

There wasn’t much point arguing with that, so I followed him down the corridor.

Darius’s private study was warmer than the rest of the fortress, with maps covering one wall and books scattered across a broad wooden desk. He motioned toward a chair, and I sat while he brought the medical supplies over and continued working on my leg.

That’s when I noticed the scar.

It disappeared beneath the collar of his shirt, pale against his skin and wide enough that it clearly hadn’t come from some harmless accident. I watched his hands pause over the bandage before asking, “How did you get that?”

He didn’t answer immediately. His fingers remained against the edge of the cloth, and something in his expression shifted before he finally said, “My father was murdered.”

I hadn’t expected that answer.

Darius told me someone inside his council had betrayed them. The betrayal gave their enemies a way into the stronghold, and when the attack came, he tried to protect his father but was badly wounded in the process.

They left him outside in the snow.

He remembered lying there, bleeding into the frozen ground while the cold slowly crept through his clothes. He could barely move, barely breathe, and still he waited for someone to come back for him.

Nobody did.

His father was already dead, and the people who had betrayed them simply walked away, leaving Darius there to die too. Somehow, he survived.

“After that night, I made an oath,” he said, securing the bandage around my leg. “Anyone under my protection would never be treated like they were worthless. I wouldn’t let someone in my care become a person everyone could discard.”

The words hit somewhere I wasn’t expecting.

Silvercrest had done exactly that to me.

My fingers moved before I could think better of it, brushing the scar beneath his collar. Darius went still, but he didn’t pull away, and I didn’t move my hand either.

The quiet between us became awkwardly charged, neither of us quite knowing what to do with it. Yet strangely, I wasn’t afraid of being this close to him.

Maybe the almighty Rogue King wasn’t as terrifying as I’d thought.

Then I noticed the warmth spreading through me, and I knew it had nothing to do with Kael. There was no mate bond tugging at my wolf, no invisible force demanding that I move closer to him; I simply felt something toward Darius that I didn’t understand yet.

And that was what unsettled me most.

The door flew open so hard it slammed against the wall. A scout stumbled into the study, his chest heaving as he tried to catch enough breath to speak.

Darius straightened. “What happened?”

The scout swallowed and forced the words out. “We caught someone sneaking around the eastern ridge. She appears to be from Silvercrest.”

My hand dropped from Darius’s scar.

Silvercrest.

“She refused to leave,” the scout continued, wiping sweat from his forehead. “We’ve tried getting answers from her, but she keeps demanding to speak with Ava.”

Darius’s attention shifted to him. “Her name?”

The scout hesitated, then shook his head. “Bethany Croft.”

I knew that name.

A memory came back so sharply I could almost hear her laugh again, surrounded by other people while she pointed at me and called me the fat reject.

And now she was here.

In Hollow Fang.

Asking for me.

“She is demanding to speak to the ‘fat reject’ she once laughed at.” the scout said.

The noise inside the tent refused to settle.Several Alphas were speaking at once, trying to make sense of what I had just revealed. Some looked openly doubtful, while others kept asking the people beside them whether they had ever heard of a surviving member of the Lunar family.I get it. They had every reason to question me. I also spent months without knowing I truly was, and now I was standing in front of them claiming a throne that had been forgotten“Gareth took our kingdom. He took our home, our people, and everything that belonged to my family. Losing the throne did not make him the rightful owner of it. It only means that no one has taken it back yet.”I looked at each alpha, refusing to soften what I was asking of them.It made no sense that Gareth could just take whatever he wants, act however he liked and not face consequences. Speaking of consequences I wonder what my fake parents are doing right. Has Gareth thrown them into prison or were they working with Gareth to bri

AVAThe tent was crowded when Darius, Mira, and I arrived. The tent was full of alphas, outlaw pack leaders, and members of Hollowfang. Warriors stood around the entrance.Darius had been preparing for this gathering for days. After the last attacks, he came to the conclusion that Gareth was receiving help from some people outside Silvercrest. The number of soldiers that attacked Hollowfang made no sense. Too many soldiers had appeared at the right places, plus Gareth's attack had become far more coordinated than they had been before. His plan was simple. He wanted some of the outlaw packs working with Hollowfang before Gareth could launch another major attack. Darius knew he couldn't trust all of them, so he needed to gather all of them first before picking who he could trust. He didn't want me to come here, but I insisted on coming with him. Now, standing inside the tent, I wondered if I had made the right choice.Something about the atmosphere felt wrong.Nobody openly challenged

POV: AVA“How many weeks?” I finally managed to ask.The doctor checked the results again before answering. “About two weeks.”Two weeks. The number sat in my head, and then the memory came back with startling clarity. The night after the battle, when everything between Darius and me had shifted, was two weeks ago. I remembered waking beside him afterward, remembered the way he had looked at me and the promise he had made that he would never let me go.I looked down at my stomach again. The timing matched.“This is Darius’s child,” I whispered, more to myself than anyone else.Mira’s eyebrows rose, and he gave me a small, knowing look. “You’ve been here for over two weeks, Ava. Unless you’ve been hiding another man somewhere in the fortress, I’m guessing that’s the answer.” Despite everything, a laugh almost escaped me.“Yes,” I admitted. “It’s Darius’s.”The realization brought a rush of happiness I hadn’t expected. A child. Darius’s child. For someone who had spent so much time wor

AVATwo weeks after Kael’s arrival, I woke up feeling sick. The nausea wasn’t severe enough to frighten me, but it was persistent, sitting unpleasantly in my throat whenever I moved. My limbs felt heavy too, and I had to sit on the edge of the bed for a few seconds before standing because my body didn’t seem interested in cooperating.I blamed the battle and everything that had happened since then. Recovering from my wound, dealing with Kael’s sudden appearance, and watching Darius prepare Hollow Fang for another attack had left little room for rest. I had been running on exhaustion for days, so feeling weak hardly seemed unusual. There was another reason I kept the sickness to myself. I knew exactly how Darius would react if I told him. After what happened during the battle, he was already protective enough. If I told him I was waking up nauseous and weak, he would probably drag a doctor into my room, order me to stay in bed, and find some reason to forbid me from doing anything witho

POV:AVA~~~~~~~Three days later~~~~~~~~~~A scout arrived breathless. He stopped in front of Darius and bowed his head quickly.“My king, someone is approaching the main gate.”Darius looked up from the table. “Who?”“We don't know yet, but he's alone and badly wounded. He appears to have come from Silvercrest.”Darius stood up and reached for his sword. I followed him as the scout hurried ahead, leading us through the corridor towards the main gate. When we got to the gate, several guards had already gathered along the walls. Their weapon were drawn, and everyone was watching the lone figure making his way through the snow.I recognized him before he came any closer.Kael.He shouldn't be here. What happened? And why was he badly injured? There were tons of questions going through my head.He could barely walk properly. His clothes were torn, his face was bruised, and blood was dripping around the side of his neck.Darius stopped beside the gate.“Ready your weapons,” he ordered his g

POV: AVAThe first thing I noticed was that Darius took me to his bedroom instead of the medical tent. I adjusted the pillows, trying to understand why he did that.“What are you doing?” I asked. “Why did you bring me here instead of taking me to the healers?”“That's because I'm treating you myself.”Has he been treating other soldiers like this too? Or was he just giving me preferential treatment, because this is the second time he has done this?He came back with a small medical kit and pulled a chair beside him. I was about to ask a question when he began to remove the damaged pieces of my clothes. He was careful not to touch the fabric against the wound.“You know there are people trained to do this, right?”“I know.”He dipped a cloth into a bowl and began to clean the blood from my arm. He was too careful for someone who could be so rough whenever his temper got the better of him.I watched him prepare to stitch me up. “Where did you learn how to do that?”“My dad taught me som
