On the eve of our engagement party, my fiancée, Alissa Coleman, gets a marriage certificate with her male best friend, Rhys Pritchard, and celebrates it in the bar. Yet, she acts completely unconcerned about what she has done. She says flippantly, "It was just a joke. We'll get divorced tomorrow. Everyone knows Rhys and I are just best friends." Rhys responds with a provocative grin. "Even though the marriage is just for a day, there's still a special bond between us. Are you all just enjoying the show and won't even prepare a wedding gift for us?" Everyone at the table laughs raucously. "Sure. I happen to have a project in the western suburbs. I'll give it to you as a wedding gift. But there are rules at this table. If you want it, you'll have to win it with a game of dice." I say nothing more and simply take a seat at the table. Meeting Alissa's perplexed frown that is directed at me, I flash her a small smile. "Isn't this supposed to be a dice-rolling game for wedding gifts? I'd like to play too," I said.

Chapter 1

Right as I sat down, silence surrounded the table for a moment.

Alissa Coleman extended her arms, wrapping them around my waist. "Alright, quit the fuss, Stan. We were just joking over some drinks. You should head home and turn in early for the night."

I backed away subtly, withdrawing myself from her arms. With a neutral expression on my face, I directed my gaze toward Rhys Pritchard.

"Stop fooling around. Your husband is sitting right there."

Alissa's face dropped, her tone turning rather impatient. "How many times do I have to repeat myself? Rhys and I are just friends. Did you think you'd still be in the picture if there really was anything going on between him and me?"

I didn't respond further. I had heard similar arguments from her far too many times.

She had forgotten our date because of Rhys. Because of Rhys, she left me by the side of the road. Because he had gotten wasted, she flagged a cab in the middle of the night just to go and pick him up.

Even now, when they had gotten married at a bar on impulse, all she had was that same excuse—they were just friends.

Upon sensing the slightly awkward atmosphere, Rhys came on over, putting his arm around Alissa's shoulder.

"Okay, just cut it out," he urged.

Thereafter, he looked toward me with a smile and said, "Stanley, there really is nothing between Alissa and me. We just got a little high from the drinks today. We'll go get our divorce processed tomorrow. I'm sorry if you were bothered by this."

As he said that, he looked down and picked up a bottle of spirit from the table. Then, he began chugging it down.

Alissa's face fell. She reached out to grab the bottle from him, snapping fiercely, "What are you doing? You've already had way too much to drink."

When she turned toward me again, she was completely livid. "Enough is enough, Stanley Fisher."

I couldn't help but scoff mockingly at myself. "No worries. It's not like I can't take a joke. I've got some time today anyway. After all, aren't you all always saying I never want to join the crowd?"

At first, everyone around the table was stunned. Then, they scrambled to smooth things over.

"That's great to hear, Stanley. We have been wanting you to hang out with us since forever, but Alissa always told us you were busy with work."

Alissa's best friend of many years, Winifred Storke, was the one who said that. She gave Alissa a wink and prompted, "Come on, Alissa. Turn on your charm and sweet-talk Stanley a little."

However, Alissa simply let out a scoff and leaned back against the couch, planting herself right on Rhys's lap. She locked her arms around his waist, the both of them looking completely inseparable.

"Don't look at me. This is my husband for tonight."

When everyone else around the table saw nothing but the smile of indifference on my face, they began cheering.

"Fine, then. Congrats to the newlyweds! Now, what game were we gonna play again?"

Rhys played the room effortlessly. He laughed heartily and explained, "We're going with the standard drinking game. We're rolling dice. But since Mr. Fisher is joining us today…

"Given how he's always occupied with work, he most certainly won't get our usual games. How about we go easy on him and just go with a simple high-low roll?

"For the losers, other than drinking, we're throwing a little extra on top to celebrate my new marriage with Alissa tonight."

Upon hearing that, everyone began to complain.

"No can do. Everyone in our circles knows how much of an expert you and Alissa are at rolling dice. Now that you are both a couple, we're all dead meat."

Alissa remained curled up in Rhys's arms, not sparing me a single glance.

She sneered. "Accept your defeat then, all of you."

The moment Winifred heard that, she panicked. She slipped the Patek Philippe item off her hand and said, "I'll be the first to add a friendly wager to the pot. This watch of mine just arrived last week."

The music at the bar blasted louder and louder, setting the atmosphere within.

Everyone else began removing the jewelry and branded watches they were wearing. Another woman, Kelly Hayes, tossed a Van Cleef & Arpels bracelet into the pile.

Without saying a word, Alissa removed her custom-made sapphire bracelet.

I stared at it, stunned. That was an anniversary gift from me to her.

Meanwhile, Rhys was still caught up in his excitement. He held Alissa close as he laughed. "Mason's watch is nice. Win it for me, Alissa."

I remained silent as I unfastened my Hermes cufflinks and placed them on the table. "Congratulations to the newlyweds. Count me in on the game too."
