Three days passed in cold silence.

Three days of avoiding Ares in the corridors. Three days of taking the plant religiously, keeping the bond muted to a whisper. Three days of feeling him reach for me through our connection and pretending I couldn't feel it.

Three days of slowly suffocating.

Elinor said I was doing the right thing. Protecting myself. Being smart.

But smart felt an awful lot like dying.

On the fourth morning, someone pounded on my door before dawn.

I jerked awake, heart racing, reaching instinctively for the dagger I kept under my pillow now.

"Leah." Ares's voice, rough and commanding. "Open the door."

I didn't move.

"I know you're awake. I can feel you through the bond. Barely, but I can feel you."

My chest tightened. The plant was supposed to block him completely. How was he still

"Open the door," he repeated. "Or I'm breaking it down."
