~~Kate~~

Dad, this is Kate. My best friend," Yssa smiles as she introduces me to the man I met earlier. “Kate, this is my father, Nathan Reid.”

I keep my head low and nod, holding back the urge to slap my face in case this is all a dream.

“It’s nice to meet you, Kate. I’m glad to have you here with us.” He sounds like he’s genuinely glad that I’m here, though I’m not sure what exactly made me glad after that messed up encounter earlier.

“...Hello. It’s nice to meet you,” I say, hesitating to shake his hand.

“Alright! Now that introduction is over, why don’t we take a seat?”

I always thought Yssa was too loud, but right now, I’m grateful she’s cheerful as ever. Otherwise, I don’t know how to keep going from here.

I don’t remember how I managed to return to my room and finish my shower. Even the lizard’s existence in the bathroom seemed nothing to me after the mess I got into because of my initial reaction.

Thinking back, it was my fault for letting fear get the best of me. I could have avoided such a humiliating scene if I remained calm. Mom was right, it’s best to keep calm in every situation to avoid making mistakes.

In my case, I brought this humiliation upon myself. Now, I don’t know how I’ll face my best friend’s dad who’s sitting in front of me. Of all people to see me like that, it had to be Yssa’s dad!

I don’t know if I can survive this dinner without embarrassing myself again. If it’s just me, I won’t be sitting right here after what happened. But of course, skipping dinner is not an option. It won’t make sense why I’ll skip it when I’m initially invited here so I won’t spend Christmas Eve alone.

But I don’t have anything to celebrate at the moment, only regret and sorrow fills my heart.

“Kate. Is everything alright? You look pale,” Yssa asks, and of all the questions she can think of, she chose to notice my regretful face.

Yeah. The reason why I’m cold and shaking right now is because of the overwhelming atmosphere around me. Maybe I lost all the blood I had earlier due to embarrassment so now my face is as white as snow.

I swallow the lump in my throat, pick up my glass and take a sip of champagne. “I…” pausing, I steal a glance at the man who’s quietly cutting his steak.

My gaze follows the graceful movement of his hand as he lifts a piece with his fork and brings it to his lips. They move slowly and deliberately as he chews. I hold my breath, as though the simple act of him chewing has become something far more intimate.

Heat creeps up to my neck and I force my eyes down to my plate, but the image lingers… the rhythm of his lips and the warmth that filled my mouth when we kissed… I just can’t forget it.

I bite my lower lip, feeling hotter. That accidental kiss is brief and unintentional, but my mind keeps playing it in replay, messing my head like an annoying song I can’t get rid of.

“Kate? Hello, Kate!”

I jolt from my seat, letting go of my fork when Yssa’s voice forcibly drags me back to reality.

“You’re spacing out. Are you okay? One moment you’re pale, and now your face is as red as tomato,” she says, her eyebrows knitting while waiting for my reply.

“A-Ah. I’m fine, Yssa. I just…” I can’t help looking at her father’s direction again. This time, Nathan’s also looking at me, making me look away in an instant. “I’m fine. Maybe I’m just tired… You know, from baking earlier.”

I try to smooth it out with a laugh, hoping it’s enough to convince Yssa. Thankfully, her expression changed when I mentioned the baking we did.

“Right! Dad, Kate and I worked hard to prepare tonight’s dessert,” she beams, moving her gaze from me to her Dad.

“Hmm. I'm quite surprised you know how to bake,” Nathan replies, looking fondly at his daughter.

“Haha! I can't, but thanks to Armando, Kate and I learned to do the basics. Right, Kate?” Yssa winks at me and I nod my head.

“Armando is a real talent. He’s been a great help to us,” I remark, glancing toward him as he stands quietly in the corner.

“You praise me too much, Miss Brown,” Amando replies with a bow, a faint smile tugging at his lips.

He looks stern, but he’s also got a gentle side.

“I’ll get the cookies so we can all share it.” Yssa stands up with a wide smile.

“Miss, let me do it,” Armando insists but Yssa just shrugs and still leaves.

Suddenly, it’s just Nathan and me at the long dining table. The silence stretches, only broken by the faint ticking of the clock on the wall. I lower my gaze to my plate, pretending to busy myself with the silverware. But I can feel his presence across from me, and it’s impossible to ignore.

I tried to fight the urge to look at him, but curiosity got the best of me. I risk a glance.

Nathan is leaning back on his chair, his fork resting against the rim of his plate. And when I move my gaze to his face, his eyes meet mine.

I let out a gasp, feeling the guilt of getting found out. I knew I shouldn’t have looked at all, but what can I do? It’s like my body moves on its own.

“Does your toe still hurt?” Nathan asks, breaking the long silence that’s almost deafening.

I open my mouth, ready to answer, but my brain fails to send the signal. “Uh… It’s fine now. I think.”

He looks at me, nodding. He didn’t say anything after that, making the atmosphere heavier.

What’s taking Yssa and Armando so long? I need them back here!

“About what happened earlier,” Nathan starts again, his fingertips tapping on the table. “I–”

“It’s okay!” I interrupted him, standing up. My hands slamming on the table. “Y-You don’t have to mention it. Just f-forget it. It’s not like losing my first kiss is a big deal,” I tattled.

Uh-oh… I’m not a fish, but why do I have to get caught by my own mouth?

~Kate~I had kissed Nathan Reid before, but somehow, kissing him now felt like signing a document I hadn’t bothered to read because I was too busy admiring the man holding the pen.It was a terrible comparison, admittedly, but my mind was not functioning at its usual level of intelligence. His arms were around me, my fingers were resting against his chest, and I could feel his heartbeat beneath the expensive fabric of his shirt. He looked down at me with an expression that made me forget the sensible speech I had prepared about taking control of my feelings.I had come here determined to stop overthinking everything.Unfortunately, Nathan had a way of making me think about entirely different things.“You’re doing it again,” he murmured.I blinked. “Doing what?”“Thinking so hard that I can practically see it happening.”I gave him an offended look. “I’m allowed to think.”“Of course you are.”“And you don’t have to comment on everything I do.”“Noted.”His smile suggested he had absol

~Kate~“I know I can’t keep pretending I don’t want you. I know I think about you far more than I should. I know that every time I tell myself to stay away from you, I end up looking for a reason to see you again.”My voice grew quieter.“And I know that I’m scared of what this means for Yssa, but I’m also scared that if I keep running away from what I feel, I’ll spend the rest of my life wondering what would have happened if I’d been brave enough to stop.”Nathan’s thumb brushed my cheek.“That’s a very different reason from wanting to get it over with.”I gave him a miserable look.“I was hoping you wouldn’t notice that part.”“Sweetheart, you looked as though you were preparing to negotiate a business merger when you told me you wanted to sleep with me.”I stared at him. Then, despite myself, I laughed.“You are so annoying.”“I’ve been told.”“By whom?”“My daughter, mostly.”“Well, she has excellent judgment.”His smile warmed, and for a moment, the tension eased enough for me to

  • Falling For My Best friend’s Father   Sixty-nine

~Kate~I had a problem, and unfortunately, the problem was a tall, handsome man who happened to be my best friend’s father.Honestly, if somebody had told me six months ago that I would be sitting in a restaurant, worrying about whether I should sleep with Nathan Reid just to get him out of my system, I would have recommended that they get some rest because clearly, they were hallucinating.Yet here I was, considering it.Actually, considering it was putting things rather mildly.I was beginning to think about it with the kind of determination I usually reserved for finishing a difficult chapter before a deadline, except this particular project involved a wealthy man with beautiful eyes, a devastating smile, and an alarming ability to make me forget every sensible thought I had ever entertained. It was ridiculous.I was a grown woman. I had survived university, family expectations, terrible group assignments, and enough romantic disappointment from fictional characters to know that de

  • Falling For My Best friend’s Father   Sixty- eight

~Kate~I laughed before I could stop myself, and Nathan looked at me again. It was becoming a serious problem.Every time I laughed, I wanted to know whether he was watching. Every time he spoke, I wanted to hear what he would say next. And every time our eyes met, I remembered the café, his hand around mine, and the way he had looked at me when he told me he wasn’t going anywhere.I was beginning to understand that the most dangerous thing about Nathan wasn’t his ability to make me feel things I had spent months trying to ignore. It was how easily he made those feelings seem natural. As though wanting him wasn’t a terrible idea.As though I hadn’t spent the previous night lying awake beside my best friend, feeling guilty about every lie I had ever told her.“Kate?”I blinked. “Sorry?”Yssa leaned forward, studying me. “I asked if you were okay. You’ve been acting strange all morning.”My fingers tightened around the menu.“Have I?”“Yes. You’re quiet, you’re distracted, and you keep

~Kate~ I had a feeling breakfast was going to be a disaster the moment Yssa announced that she had invited Bob. Not because I disliked Bob. I have come to like him quite a lot, which was part of the problem. He was funny, reasonably intelligent, and had the kind of face that made people trust him even when he was clearly about to say something stupid. Unfortunately, he also had absolutely no sense of timing, and I was beginning to suspect that the universe had arranged for him to arrive specifically to witness my slow and very embarrassing descent into madness. “Oh, and before either of you starts complaining, I already told him we’re here,” Yssa announced, looking between her father and me with the satisfied expression of someone who had just solved world hunger. Nathan raised an eyebrow. “Who is complaining?” “Nobody yet, but I know you, Daddy. You were probably planning to have some serious father-daughter conversation with me over expensive eggs, and now Bob is coming to

  • Falling For My Best friend’s Father   Sixty six

~Nathan~I had faced business partners who thought they could outsmart me, men who mistook my patience for weakness, and situations that would have sent most people running for the nearest exit, yet nothing had prepared me for driving my daughter and the woman I couldn’t stop thinking about to breakfast while pretending there was absolutely nothing going on between us.Life had a wicked sense of humor, and apparently, I was its latest victim.Yssa had been talking for the past ten minutes about a woman she followed online who had gotten engaged after dating a man for only three months. According to my daughter, the man had either found the love of his life or was desperately trying to secure a wife before the woman discovered his true personality. I had no idea how we had arrived at that conclusion, but I had learned long ago that interrupting Yssa in the middle of a story was a waste of everybody’s time.“So, Dad, what do you think?” she asked suddenly.I glanced at her through the r
