Anna wished she was somewhere else right now.

She glanced at the figure beside her and her nose scrunched up.

Her phone rang just then, her younger sister's smiling face filling the screen.

“Is everything okay, Lena?” She asked the moment the call connected.

“Yes! When are you getting here?”

Anna side-eyed the figure behind the wheel. “We happen to be crawling like a snail right now, but I'm sure I'll be there soon, okay? Go have fun, and big sis will roll in soon with the cannon.”

The call ended and Anna leaned back into the passenger seat with a sigh.

Jason's deep voice cut in, low and smug, “Still like telling people what to do, huh?”

Anna turned away toward the window, deciding she wasn't going to give him the satisfaction of an answer this time. She wasn't sure what spoiled the night more: sitting in a car en route to the venue of her sister's wedding after-party with the most annoying jerk she knew, or the fact that he was clearly enjoying her torture.

Jason Knight.

The groom's annoying brother and best man, which meant as her sister's Chief bridesmaid, Anna had been stuck with him these past few days!

She didn't know a fate more horrible, nor a person more maddeningly unpredictable.

The first time they'd met, she was sure he hated her guts. His big grin for his baby brother had dropped the instant he saw her. He'd spent the rest of that day offering nothing but cold shoulders and dissecting stares, as if she were some kind of lab rat.

Then the next day at rehearsal?

A full 180.

He'd kissed her hand like a gentleman, called her his favourite bridesmaid, and showed up with chocolate bars like a lovesick fool.

And then today at the wedding, he'd ignored her almost completely, entertaining every other bridesmaid and lady who so much as blinked his way. Charming, handsome, magnetic, and she hated that she'd noticed.

She'd decided that Jason Knight was the kind of man she wanted nothing to do with.

But here she was, in his car.

“Quieten your brain, spitfire.” Amusement rang in Jason's voice. “I can see the smoke through your nostrils and ears.”

“Pretty sure yours is frozen from the alcohol and cringy flirts,” Anna shot back, glaring at him from across the console.

Jason’s eyes left the road momentarily, a smirk on his lips. “Were you watching me, Princess?”

“What— why would I watch you? And stop calling me those silly names you give your girls.”

He chuckled. “You didn't have an issue with it the other day, Sweetheart.”

Anna tried to ignore the heat creeping up her neck slowly. “Ever heard the phrase, for peace to reign?”

Jason frowned, rubbed his jaw in thought. “Enlighten me, if you would, Your highness.”

“I tolerated your presence and bawl-worthy attempts at flirting because it's my sister's wedding. Curb it.”

Jason pulled into the hotel for the after party just then and turned to her. He pressed a button to lock the doors, preventing her from exiting.

“You've still got that same bossy tone, Princess.” He leaned forward. “Makes me wonder what you sound like when you break down.”

Anna frowned. “What does that mean?”

Jason grinned. “It means I want to get to know—” his eyes trailed over Anna slowly, “—every part of you.”

Suddenly, Anna felt naked. She resisted the urge to pull the silk fabric of her dark red gown over her exposed cleavage. Heat bloomed on her cheeks, thankfully hidden by the blush she had on. She reached for the door immediately and frowned when it didn't budge.

She turned back to him and her breath caught at the look in his eyes. Her tongue darted out quickly to moisten her lips. “Unlock the door, Jason.”

His smirk was pure sin. “Not until you say you’ll dance with me.”

“I’d rather—”

“—kiss me?” His gaze dropped to her mouth, slow and deliberate, like he already knew her answer. “Careful, Princess. You keep looking at me like that and I’ll think you want me.”

Her pulse spiked. He was too close, too smug, and way too tempting. “You’re drunk.”

“Drunk on you, maybe.”

She hated him almost as much as she wanted to find out how good that mouth really was. She swallowed around the sudden lump in her throat, unable to tear her gaze away from his lips. Those heart shaped lips. She wanted to know if they were as soft as they looked.

Jason leaned over the console, a smug smile stretching his lips. He grabbed her chin with his thumb and index finger, tilted her head up. Their gaze met and locked, and he ran his thumb over her lower lip slowly, his gaze lowering to watch them part.

Goosebumps broke out on Anna's skin from his touch, and her eyes fluttered close as his fingers caressed her cheeks. Jason's lips lowered slowly to hers but with their lips just inches apart, he stopped.

He brought his lips to her ears instead and whispered in a low, hoarse voice, “Does this mean you'll dance with me then?”

Anna's eyes flew open, her face turning the color of an overripe tomato the moment she realized just what she'd done. Or rather, what she'd been willing to let him do.

She pushed against his chest and Jason pulled back, a smirk on his lips. Anna wanted to slap it off his face.

God. She wanted to strangle him.

She cleared her throat. “Open—open the door, Mr. Knight.”

Jason tilted his head to the side, eyes boring into her. “The dance?”

“Fine. I'll dance with you! Jus—just open the da… door!”

Jason pressed a button and the doors unlocked with a click. He opened his mouth to speak, but Anna was out of the car before he could get the first word out, like hellhounds were hot on her heels.

“Maybe they are,” he muttered under his breath, eyes darkening as they followed her with a glare and a hunger he couldn't suppress. “This wasn't part of the fucking plan.” .

Her sheer red gown had tormented him all afternoon at the wedding, and now every step she took only fanned the fire in him.

This wasn’t part of the plan. The plan to ruin her like she did him in high school, but his body betrayed him anyway. His jaw tightened.

Who said he couldn’t get both?

A wicked thrill curled through

him. He was going to leave a mark on her that she would never forget, and he would have fun while at it.

  • Ruined By My Brother-In-Law    On A Collision Course

Jason sat behind his desk, the morning light cutting through the blinds in sharp lines across the polished surface. It had been a day since he'd initiated the quiet investigation, and had managed to keep the investigators focused and discreet overnight. His phone lay face down, notifications muted, but the investigator’s updates had already arrived on his tablet. USB logs, device checks, two flashed exports of the hospital clip from the nurse station—one from Dr. Mitchell, the other from an intern. His brows furrowed at the lack of anything incriminating in Dr. Mitchell's ersonal office computer. One of them had gone too far—and just yesterday, Jason would've been willing to place his cards on the attending. Now, he wasn’t so sure. There was still the issue of the burner email and Dr. Mitchell's name on it, but anyone would've easily framed that. Just like she'd mentioned yesterday. But still, not the intern. She had no motive to sabotage Anna. Except if the intern was more affect

  • Ruined By My Brother-In-Law    Too Convenient

Anna's brows furrowed as she watched the interns speak, her body reacting before her mind could. Her stomach knotted, shoulders stiffening. Emotions shot through her, too fast to grasp. Only one thought surfaced: They shouldn't be doing that. She shifted uncomfortably on the floor, feeling the heat raise to her face at their praise. Leah let out a low whistle, her gaze shifting from the screen to her. “They must really adore you,” she whispered, almost reverently, nudging Anna slightly. Anna's lips stretched tightly, then snapped back. They were making her out to be a saint—she wasn't. She straightened as Sierra began to speak, her eyes locked on the screen unblinkingly. For the slightest moment, her lips tugged as her own words were echoed back to her. Until Sierra said the words that erased that fleeting smile. “And that's what she gave me… room to grow. To learn.” Anna tensed, realizing where she was taking this. She wanted to scream for her to stop. She could see the pain,

  • Ruined By My Brother-In-Law    Room To Grow

Jason walked around the desk, sank into the seat and pressed play. Silence settled over the office, thick and expectant. The young doctors introduced themselves—the interns Anna had mentioned—before launching into their experience. Apparently they were on night duty and had sneaked off to an empty nurses station to record the video. Jason's eyes scanned their faces, reading the tension in their expressions, the restless energy in their movements. They were chaotic—talking over each other, rambling—which made it clear this was impulsive. Anna had made them feel comfortable enough to ask questions, to admit when they didn't know. And to keep going anyway. “She took us under her wing.” “Chief is selfless. She takes on shifts when others have emergencies.” “Remember when she'd pull a thirty-six-hour shift without breaking a sweat?” Jason's gaze zeroed in on the young doctor—Sierra, she'd introduced horse as—the one from the viral clip as others kept talking. She had been quiet sin

  • Ruined By My Brother-In-Law    Pickles, Ice Cream, and Tears

It was dark by the time Anna dragged herself out of bed and into the bathroom. She filled the tub with warm water, threw in her oils and soap—and sank into it until only her face broke the surface. Exhausted, she lay there, unmoving, until the water turned cold. Then she stepped out and headed straight to her room, water droplets trailing behind her. She moved in a haze, her movements lethargic as she threw on a baggy t-shirt with shorts, then proceeded to apply her moisturizer. She stared at her reflection as she rubbed the face serum into her skin in slow circles. Her phone buzzed with a message somewhere on the nightstand, but she ignored it.Her bones were heavy. A splitting headache throbbed at the back of her head, and dizziness lingered behind her eyes. She pushed to her feet just as her bedroom door creaked open and Leah appeared. “You done crying in there or do you want snacks first?”Anna paused, her lips parting as she stared incredulously at Leah. Hadn't she left? Leah

  • Ruined By My Brother-In-Law    A Glimpse Of Hope

Jason told himself he wasn’t thinking about Anna. He told himself that several times before the lie stopped sounding convincing. He had spent the past few hours running through possible courses of action in his head, staring at his phone as though it might magically dial her number itself—all while Travis preached in front of the big screen. He'd barely heard a word, and that annoyed him to no end. “What do you think, Mr. Knight?” Travis had asked with an annoyingly wide smile after his rather… decent presentation. He'd cleared his throat, searched his brain, and could only come up with, “Thank you for the thorough analysis. We'll get back to you.” Him—Jason Knight, notorious for his unnerving presence in boardrooms and conferences—had said just that and then left. Ethan informing him that he'd recorded the presentation—as though he knew Jason hadn't been listening—only made the irritation under his skin worse. He was back at his office now, the floor-to-ceiling glass wall behi

  • Ruined By My Brother-In-Law    Mother Knows Best

“NO.” One word spat out through clenched teeth. Anna grabbed the duvet and stormed past Elena, their shoulders bumping. Elena followed. Julian's head tilted to the side as he watched. “She said she couldn't reach you, so she—” Elena stared hesitantly. Anna scoffed, cutting her off. “I wonder why? Oh, right. I blocked her.” “You blocked her?” Anna said nothing, focusing on draping the duvet over her bed. Anger and hurt twisted inside her, mingling with a gnawing sense of inadequacy. Elena stepped closer as she tucked in the corners. “You can't avoid her forever.” “I very much plan to,” Anna snapped. “She's our mother no matter what, Anna. You can't run from that fact,” Elena said firmly, frowning. Abandoning the duvet, Anna snapped around to her, face contorted in anger. “That's so easy for you to say,” she spat. “You're not the one who endured her…” Anna paused, biting her lower lip. “Go on, say it.” Elena moved closer. “What? You were the one who carried it all?” She chall

Anyone looking would think the weight of the world bored him more than it burdened him. Jason lounged on the couch with an almost careless grace, head tilted against his knuckles, eyes shut. “If you can't handle such a simple task, you should forget about becoming a doctor!”Anna stopped in her tracks, the hand holding a patient's chart dropping to her side.
