CHAPTER 30: Paranoia
"Stop shivering, Hazel. You are raising suspicions."
Emily's scolding had Hazel looking up with her anxious eyes. And indeed, the officer Theodore had sent for her, was looking her way with joined brows and concerned expressions.
Seeing her eyes on him, he took the initiative of asking,"Is everything okay, ma'am?" His tone filled with respect.
Hazel lowered her eyes and mumbled, "Yes, sir. I'm fine. Thank you." She intake large breaths to calm herself down.
The officer didn't look persuaded though he didn't press furthur either. Nodding, he stepped a bit away from the girls to give them some privacy Albeit his eyes were following them with hawk gaze.
"Now what?" Hazel mouthed to Emily who was standing beside her. Both were now in corridor of hospital. Emily indicated Hazel to keep quiet and turned towards the officer.
"Sir, I will take Hazel inside my office. You can guard on the doorframe."
"Sure thing." He gave a curt nod.

Her mouth went dry with fear. She couldn't speak. She couldn't move. "Shh, baby. Stop crying, will you? Are you not my good girl?"He was trying to hush her softy while brushing his fingers through her hair in an attempt to calm her. But, her tears were not stopping. Not a sound was leaving her. He was continuously murmuring gentle things and regretful apologies for jumping to conclusions.
