Chapter 5

Author: Dewy Sheep
Sabrina finished drafting her divorce agreement with Cameron in her study at midnight and went to work as usual the next morning.

Just as she parked, however, a disheveled woman rushed toward her like a deranged maniac, and Sabrina instinctively locked her car doors.

"You bitch! You heartless lawyer! My son is innocent! He's innocent!"

The woman acted like she was completely out of her mind, using the brick in her hands to smash Sabrina's windshield. The glass broke and shattered everywhere on the floor.

Shards of glass ricocheted onto Sabrina's skin, slicing into the back of her hand.

It was such a huge commotion that the guards in the parking garage were alarmed and quickly subdued the crazy middle-aged woman.

One of the guards looked at Sabrina and asked, "Are you okay, Ms. Kerr?"

Sabrina shook her head and got out of the car.

The woman was still screaming insults at her. It was only then that Sabrina recognized her.

Sabrina had taken on a case three years ago, involving the sexual assault of a teenage girl. The girl's parents had cried so much that their eyes were completely swollen when they came looking for Sabrina. Many law firms had turned them down because there wasn't enough evidence to build a case.

Nevertheless, Sabrina accepted the case and spent a year and a half gathering evidence. Eventually, she won it, and the teenage boys were sentenced to juvenile detention.

This middle-aged woman was the mother of one of the teenage boys. Reportedly, her son had only just been accepted into a top-tier college, and she had tried bribing Sabrina into dropping the victim's case against her son. However, Sabrina had rejected the idea without even looking at her.

"Ms. Kerr?" the guard called Sabrina again a few more times before she snapped back to the present. "What do you want us to do about this?"

"Call the police," Sabrina said, looking at her smashed car. "She needs to compensate for the damages and apologize for her behavior."

As for the other thing…

Sabrina narrowed her eyes.

The sexual assault victim's case had already been closed a year ago. If this woman wanted to get revenge on her, she would have done it earlier. Why did she have to wait until now?

The guards understood Sabrina's orders and began dragging the woman away.

However, the deranged woman seemed to have completely lost her mind, trying to free herself from the guards while spewing profanities that echoed around the underground parking garage.

Sabrina ignored her and walked out.

She hadn't done anything wrong back then. Naturally, she didn't take any of the women's insults to heart.

However, Juliana refused to have any of it, especially when she saw the cuts on the back of Sabrina's hand. She insisted on taking her to the hospital to get it cleaned up.

Sabrina was no match for her, so she followed Juliana to the outpatient clinic instead.

Her wounds were a lot more serious than she thought, and she even had to get stitches for one of them.

In the meantime, Juliana excused herself to take a call outside. When she came back, Sabrina noticed Juliana had a dark look on her face. She asked in concern, "What's wrong?"

"It's nothing. Just a phone call from one of the parties involved in my case." Juliana smiled casually in return. "By the way, how are things with you and Cameron? Are you really planning to take legal action against him?"

Sabrina could tell that Juliana was trying to change the topic and decided not to expose her. Instead, she smiled faintly and answered, "I won't choose to take him to court unless absolutely necessary."

Even though Cameron was faking his disability, it was still a hard fact that he saved her life before.

No matter how he was now, Sabrina would never deny that Cameron saved her back then.

The fact that she didn't plan on using Cameron's years of faking a disability as leverage in the divorce was enough to show how merciful she was to him and his family. She thought of it as a way of repaying him for saving her life years ago.

Although Juliana didn't know about Sabrina's true intentions, she knew that Sabrina was a shrewd person who knew what she was doing.

And so, they returned to the law firm without exchanging another word.

Sabrina's car had been towed away. So, she could only call for an Uber back home after work.

However, as soon as she stepped out of the firm, she caught sight of a very familiar Spyker waiting for her.

The window rolled down just then, revealing Cameron's gentle face.

"Rina," he called out to her while waving his arm.

Sabrina frowned and walked up to him. "What are you doing here?"

"I'm here to pick you up from work."

Despite his physical limitations, he was still willing to travel a long distance to pick her up. In other words, he was still playing the role of a doting husband as he always did.

If this had been in the past, Sabrina would have been incredibly touched. She would have immediately told him about how the crazy woman had smashed her car that morning, shown him the cut on the back of her hand, and told him about everything that had happened at work.

But now, she kept a fair distance away from him once she'd gotten into the car.

Cameron sensed that Sabrina had changed. He was just about to bring it up when a sound interrupted him.

"Woof!"

A weak, tiny bark could be heard, and it caught Sabrina's attention immediately.

She tore her gaze from the window, and her eyes immediately filled with tears.

"Do you like it?"

Cameron suddenly produced a clear animal cage out of nowhere, and inside it was a tiny, palm-sized bichon frise.

When he saw Sabrina's reddened eyes, he thought that she was simply touched by his gesture. After all, he always thought that she was very easy to please.

Cameron held Sabrina's hand and said gently, "What happened yesterday was my fault. I know you're heartbroken that Berry is gone, but Rina, you should also know that life will eventually come to an end.

"This puppy will be able to replace Berry and keep you company. It's the same principle."

The puppy looked almost identical to Berry. She could tell that he must have spent a long time searching for it.

Even so, what did it matter?

Berry was gone. No matter how identical his replacement looked to him, the puppy was no longer the same dog she had grown up with.

Sabrina drew in a deep breath and forced the tears back. Her voice was hoarse as she asked, "Do your words from yesterday still count?"

Cameron looked confused for a second. But he soon recalled what he said and grinned at her. "Of course it still does. What would you like, Rina?"

"I recall Sterling Group recently expanded into Teal City with a new subsidiary. How about appointing my law firm as the company's outside counsel?"

When he heard that, Cameron asked, a little stunned, "Why do you suddenly want this?"

If this had happened in the past, Sabrina would have politely turned him down and told him that she didn't want anything.

Even when she had brought it up earlier, he simply thought that she would ask for another car, or a house, or jewelry, or purses…

Sabrina didn't answer his question. Instead, she took the animal cage from him and asked, "What, don't you trust me?"

Although Juliana had intended to hide it from her, Sabrina wasn't stupid. The law firm had been struggling lately, and she had had to turn down many cases because her attention had been on Katherine's pro bono case.

Juliana had been the one who offered Sabrina a job when she was at her lowest point. And now, Sabrina couldn't bear to only watch from the sidelines.

She also had her own selfish reason for this.

Sabrina concealed the glint in her eyes as she pretended to casually play with the new puppy.

"Of course I do," Cameron said. He didn't realize that he had heaved a sigh of relief when he saw Sabrina smiling. "Why rely on outsiders when you can trust your own family? And what reason is there not to trust my own wife?"

He then reached up to pat Sabrina on the head. "Why don't you draft an agreement, and I'll review it once you're done?"

"I've already drafted it up," Sabrina said lightly. "I'll show you as soon as we get home."

Cameron's smile froze on his face. He didn't think that Sabrina would be this prepared.

When she noticed that Cameron hadn't spoken for a long while, she grew curious and asked, "What's wrong?"

"Nothing," Cameron said, snapping back to the present. His lips curled upward slightly. "I just didn't think that…"

He trailed off, wondering if he should finish his thought. Ultimately, he gave up on it.

He played with the puppy with her and realized that the atmosphere had eased considerably. He then smiled and said, "By the way, Rina, Grandma said that she's organizing a family dinner on the weekend to thank all the people who helped out during Grandpa's funeral.

"You should come along too."

"A family dinner?" Sabrina echoed, glancing up instinctively.

She remembered the Sterling family's mocking, sarcastic expressions and felt an immediate sense of resistance.

"Forget about it. I'm not going. I might not even be free."

"Don't be silly," Cameron said, trying to coax her gently. "Grandma wants everyone to get along well with each other. Don't embarrass the family in front of outsiders.

"Besides, the Sampson family from Cardington will be there too."

At once, Sabrina's face was drained of all color.

"You're going back to Lark City? You're not going there to see Ms. Kerr, are you?"Archer gave no response."But you can't!" Felix stopped him as fast as he could. "You know perfectly well that, at this very moment, Mr. Bryan and Mr. Lucas are looking for dirt to blackmail you. If they find out that you're…"He let out an anxious sigh before continuing, "Mr. Redwood, there's no need to worry. I've been keeping a close watch on Ms. Kerr. If anything unusual comes up, I'll let you know immediately!""Enough of your nonsense." There was a tense, frigid bite to Archer's voice. "I'll ask you just one thing—how did Sabrina get hurt?""She…" Felix hesitated, words caught in his throat. "She was

At the Sampson Group in Cardington, Felix had just clocked in.He knocked on the door to the president's office and pushed it open only after he was given permission to."Mr. Redwood, I have hot news! Ms. Kerr is coming to Cardington!" he exclaimed, his face brimming with palpable delight.Archer, who was in the middle of signing a document, paused for a moment. He looked up and instantly met Felix's beaming eyes. For some reason, a sense of irritation stirred within him."Why are you so happy that Sabrina is coming to Cardington?""Huh?" Felix paused, slightly confused."Are you not happy?"Caught off guard, Archer was at a loss for words."That's enough. Just mind your own business."He cleared his throat and casually flipped through some documents, though his mind was entirely elsewhere. "Do you know why Sabrina is visiting Cardington?" he asked, trying to sound nonchalant."For work, I think," Felix replied as he straightened up. "She's working on the shocking murder ca

There was a moment of silence before Sabrina spoke up softly."Why don't you give him another call? At least just to ask about the situation, or perhaps set up a meeting with whoever's involved.""Absolutely not!" Juliana rejected her without hesitation. "Your body has not yet fully recovered. Are you trying to get yourself killed?""It's no big deal. Since he's already reached out, there's no harm in hearing more from him." Sabrina offered Juliana a reassuring smile. "If I can take it, I'll take it. If I can't, then I won't."When she learned that the client came from a broken family, her heart was struck by a hint of sympathy. Perhaps she felt that she understood his suffering, or perhaps she was just reluctant to turn a blind eye. She genuinely didn't feel like rejecting this case just like that.Juliana stared at her for a moment before relenting. Right in front of Sabrina, she returned the call. They briefly exchanged a few words before she hung up. "So, we agreed that he

"You!"Cameron hadn't expected Sabrina's outright denial. Shaking in anger, he pointed to the shattered glass on the floor."There's literally broken glass and water on the floor, Sabrina! When have you become someone who doesn't own up to their faults?""That's such a wild accusation, Mr. Sterling." A cold, mocking laugh came from behind him. Juliana leaned casually against the doorframe as she gazed at Cameron with a look of contempt. "Sabrina was just diagnosed with a moderate concussion, meaning she's dizzy and her hands are unsteady. That's how she accidentally broke the teapot when trying to pour herself a drink. What's all the fuss about?"The two of them echoed one another, attacking Cameron in all directions. His gaze instantly darkened."Do you think the doctors and police are all dumb? If Katherine had reported this to the police, how is Sabrina planning to cover it up?""I'm afraid Ms. Johnston isn't the only one who needs to file a report."Sabrina looked up and c

The tea was made just before Juliana left to answer the call. The scalding hot liquid rained down on Katherine, and the pot was completely shattered.
