Chapter 4

Author: Dewy Sheep
Cameron suddenly realized that he sounded a little too harsh earlier. He sighed and softened his tone.

"I didn't mean it like that, Rina. It's just… You know that Grandpa just passed away. I just don't want any other problems to pop up. If Grandma learns about this, she's only going to make life harder for you."

Sabrina's breath hitched, and she stared at him in disbelief. "Are you threatening me?"

"Must you put it so harshly, Rina?" Cameron frowned, his gentle tone carrying an unyielding order. "It's just an apology. It won't take much of your time."

"What if I refuse?"

Sabrina had been a lawyer for years, and this wasn't the first time she'd been threatened. However, it was the first time she had been threatened by her own husband. She could feel a prickly, piercing pain in her heart.

Cameron saw that her eyes were still very red despite her stubbornness. He felt a sudden pang of pity for her.

He massaged his temples and said, "Rina, if you go to the hospital and comfort Danny, I'll agree to whatever you want, okay?"

Hearing that, Sabrina abruptly looked up. She thought she'd misheard him, so she asked him again, "Anything I want?"

"Yes, anything you want." When he realized that she was beginning to waver, he quickly struck while the iron was still hot.

"Rina, I'm also heartbroken that Berry is gone. But no matter what, the child is always more important. We as parents shouldn't allow Danny to suffer from psychological trauma at such a young age."

As parents?

Katherine was Dante's parent. Even Abram and Tina could still somewhat be his "parents" if need be.

But since when did an uncle like Cameron become Dante's "parent" as well?

Even so, Sabrina couldn't be bothered to waste another word on Cameron. All she cared about was the one thing he'd said—that she could have anything she wanted.

They soon arrived at the hospital. Timothy helped Cameron out of his seat and into the wheelchair this time. Usually, Sabrina was the one doing it, but she didn't offer to help him now.

Cameron thought that she was still upset about Berry and didn't question her.

Katherine was peeling an apple for Dante in the ward. When she saw them, she quickly got up, her eyes red as if she'd just been crying.

"Are you okay, Sabrina?" she asked, reaching out to hold Sabrina's hand. "I've been indulging Dante too much. He's still very young, though, so please don't hold this against him.

"Danny, apologize to Aunt Sabrina."

Dante just scoffed and hugged the toy car he was holding tighter. "I'll never apologize! She's an evil witch! She's an evil witch who lets her dog scare me!"

"Danny!"

Katherine was in tears again, looking like a helpless mother against her own child. "Aunt Sabrina has done so much for us! How could you be so mean to her?"

"Alright. Don't cry anymore," Cameron said, handing Katherine some tissue paper, a trace of pity reflecting in his eyes.

When Dante saw that someone was backing him up, he got down from the bed and climbed up to sit in Cameron's lap instead.

Cameron also naturally hugged and comforted him while speaking to Katherine, "Rina is a lawyer. It's her job to handle cases like yours. You don't have to think too much of it."

Sabrina couldn't stop herself from sneering inwardly.

It is a lawyer's duty to represent and defend clients in court, but that obligation exists only when legal fees are paid.

Katherine's case hadn't been an easy one. She wanted custody of Dante and accused her ex-husband of domestic abuse. However, when it came to filing the lawsuit, there was not enough evidence to support a case.

When Sabrina represented Katherine in court, she hadn't charged the latter a single penny because Katherine was Cameron's cousin. Sabrina had worked tirelessly for half a year on the case, only for Cameron to say that it was simply her job.

"Daddy…"

Dante nuzzled his face into the crook of Cameron's neck and whined pitifully, "The evil witch bullied me. Can't you scold her for me? I'm scared…"

"Don't be scared, Danny."

Cameron's lips curved upward, but he didn't tell Dante off for calling Sabrina an "evil witch". Instead, he just gave her a look, silently telling her to apologize.

Sabrina took a deep breath, telling herself that this was the last time.

She would do this to ensure a smooth divorce. Once she successfully divorced him, she could distance herself from all this filth.

She took another deep breath. Even after mentally preparing herself, it still took her a while to speak.

"Katherine, it was partially my fault that Danny got hospitalized. Next time… it won't happen again."

A flash of smugness crossed Katherine's eyes before she slipped into a gracious act and said, "Sabrina, you're being too polite. Danny—"

"What happens to him is none of my business," Sabrina continued, interrupting Katherine.

Sabrina's voice was indifferent as she said, "It was my fault for not taking better care of Berry. I'd forgotten that animals were just like humans. You can't just keep them around; you have to teach them properly. Otherwise, if anything happened to them, there might not be a next time."

Katherine paled. She looked at Cameron, guilt in her eyes, and saw that he wasn't responding. She called out to him pitifully, "Cam…"

"Berry is dead. You even smashed his skull," Sabrina said, interrupting Katherine again as she crouched before Dante, a cryptic smile playing on her lips. "So, you don't have to worry about him anymore, unless he comes back to scare you in your dreams. Alright?"

The bright, sunny sky suddenly rumbled with thunder, as if it were a hired actor backing up Sabrina's words. Moments later, rain began to fall.

Dante froze, his eyes widening. Then, he burst into tears.

He hugged Cameron's neck tightly and said, "Daddy, I'm scared… Can't you stay with me tonight? I want you to protect Mommy and me…"

Cameron comforted him for a while. He was a little displeased with Sabrina. "Why did you have to scare him like that?"

"Did I? Weren't you the one who said he shouldn't have to live with the psychological trauma at his age?" Sabrina asked, getting to her feet. "I just wanted him to know the truth. He won't have to be afraid of that dog anymore next time."

"That's enough."

Cameron was at a loss for words. His expression darkened as he said, "Since you've already apologized, you can go back now. I'll stay back to take care of Danny."

That worked out for Sabrina anyway.

If Cameron stayed, then Sabrina would have enough time to draft the divorce agreement that night. So, she got to her feet and left without any objections.

But before she reached the elevator, Katherine ran out after her, calling her name several times.

Sabrina frowned. She wanted to pretend she hadn't heard it, but the elevator took quite a while to arrive, giving Katherine time to catch up.

She had her back on Katherine, but she could still hear the latter's footsteps getting closer behind her.

"I'm sorry about today, Sabrina."

Although it sounded like an apology, Katherine could barely contain the smugness in her eyes.

"But still, you don't have to think too much about it. Cam's almost 30 years old. I mean, what kind of man wouldn't want to have a child of his own?"

She then deliberately glanced at Sabrina's belly, the mockery in her eyes intensifying. "By the way, Sabrina, you've already been married to Cam for five years. Why aren't you pregnant yet?

"Want me to accompany you for a check-up since we're already at the hospital?"

Sabrina chuckled. "Anybody can get pregnant and give birth, but not everybody knows how to discipline their child, and not everybody deserves to be a parent either."

"You!" Katherine's face turned purple.

The elevator arrived with a soft ding, and Sabrina stepped in, refusing to spend another breath on Katherine.

"You bitch!" Katherine stomped her feet in anger, gritting her teeth as she glared at the closed elevator doors.

She suddenly thought of something, and an evil grin appeared on her lips. She took out her phone and sent a text to somebody.

"Let's see how much longer you can stay this smug, Sabrina Kerr!"

Felix scrambled to his feet and trotted after Archer."Mr. Redwood, where are you going?""Lark City.""Lark…" He nodded at first, but what quickly followed was a loud gasp. "You're going back to Lark City? You're not going there to see Ms. Kerr, are you?"Archer gave no response."But you can't!" Felix stopped him as fast as he could. "You know perfectly well that, at this very moment, Mr. Bryan and Mr. Lucas are looking for dirt to blackmail you. If they find out that you're…"He let out an anxious sigh before continuing, "Mr. Redwood, there's no need to worry. I've been keeping a close watch on Ms. Kerr. I'll never let any trouble get to her."Besides, Ms. Kerr is perfectly fine now. I've been monitoring her all this time. If anything unusual comes up, I'll let you know immediately!""Enough of your nonsense." There was a tense, frigid bite to Archer's voice. "I'll ask you just one thing—how did Sabrina get hurt?""She…" Felix hesitated, words caught in his throat. "She was

At the Sampson Group in Cardington, Felix had just clocked in.He knocked on the door to the president's office and pushed it open only after he was given permission to."Mr. Redwood, I have hot news! Ms. Kerr is coming to Cardington!" he exclaimed, his face brimming with palpable delight.Archer, who was in the middle of signing a document, paused for a moment. He looked up and instantly met Felix's beaming eyes. For some reason, a sense of irritation stirred within him."Why are you so happy that Sabrina is coming to Cardington?""Huh?" Felix paused, slightly confused."Are you not happy?"Caught off guard, Archer was at a loss for words."That's enough. Just mind your own business."He cleared his throat and casually flipped through some documents, though his mind was entirely elsewhere. "Do you know why Sabrina is visiting Cardington?" he asked, trying to sound nonchalant."For work, I think," Felix replied as he straightened up. "She's working on the shocking murder ca

There was a moment of silence before Sabrina spoke up softly."Why don't you give him another call? At least just to ask about the situation, or perhaps set up a meeting with whoever's involved.""Absolutely not!" Juliana rejected her without hesitation. "Your body has not yet fully recovered. Are you trying to get yourself killed?""It's no big deal. Since he's already reached out, there's no harm in hearing more from him." Sabrina offered Juliana a reassuring smile. "If I can take it, I'll take it. If I can't, then I won't."When she learned that the client came from a broken family, her heart was struck by a hint of sympathy. Perhaps she felt that she understood his suffering, or perhaps she was just reluctant to turn a blind eye. She genuinely didn't feel like rejecting this case just like that.Juliana stared at her for a moment before relenting. Right in front of Sabrina, she returned the call. They briefly exchanged a few words before she hung up. "So, we agreed that he

"You!"Cameron hadn't expected Sabrina's outright denial. Shaking in anger, he pointed to the shattered glass on the floor."There's literally broken glass and water on the floor, Sabrina! When have you become someone who doesn't own up to their faults?""That's such a wild accusation, Mr. Sterling." A cold, mocking laugh came from behind him. Juliana leaned casually against the doorframe as she gazed at Cameron with a look of contempt. "Sabrina was just diagnosed with a moderate concussion, meaning she's dizzy and her hands are unsteady. That's how she accidentally broke the teapot when trying to pour herself a drink. What's all the fuss about?"The two of them echoed one another, attacking Cameron in all directions. His gaze instantly darkened."Do you think the doctors and police are all dumb? If Katherine had reported this to the police, how is Sabrina planning to cover it up?""I'm afraid Ms. Johnston isn't the only one who needs to file a report."Sabrina looked up and c

"I—"For a moment, Katherine was visibly fumbling for words."I just—"The next second, a shrill scream rang out in the ward.Giving Katherine no chance to explain herself, Sabrina grabbed the teapot sitting on her bedside and smashed it over her head. The tea was made just before Juliana left to answer the call. The scalding hot liquid rained down on Katherine, and the pot was completely shattered. Katherine screamed and yelped as she curled up on the floor with her hand pressed against her cheek.Sabrina couldn't see the extent of the injury, but judging by the blood seeping through her fingers, her face must have been cut by shards of glass.Cameron had just returned with Sabrina's favorite dessert. "Once you've recovered, I'll sign the papers."Uttering those words, Cameron felt like a convict being led to the execution floor with a blade poised over his neck—not wishing to die yet powerless to resist."But before that, I'll find the person who attacked you.
