Chapter 5

Author: Axcellent
"Lucian! You… You're being too violent! You've truly gone crazy!" Giselle screamed as she pointed a trembling finger at him.

"I'm sleeping in the guest bedroom," Lucian snapped before marching out of the master bedroom.

Since Giselle was pregnant, he didn't want to continue arguing with her.

Meanwhile, Giselle kept staring at the shattered phone on the floor. Too angry to say anything, she didn't try to stop him.

The next morning, Lucian was woken up by the alarm. He had stayed up late last night and wasn't in the best of spirits.

After getting dressed, he walked out of the bedroom and saw Giselle sitting on the couch, huffing away in anger.

"Oh, my. To think that someone still managed to get a good night's sleep," Giselle remarked with a sneer as she eyed Lucian.

Frowning, he fired back, "If you've got something to say, say it. Don't give me that sarcasm and those pointed remarks."

"Why, you!"

Grinding her teeth, Giselle couldn't resist marching up to him and pinching him in the side. "You're the one who lost your temper at your wife and unborn child last night! Why are you acting like you're in the right, huh? I'll have you know that your actions count as domestic violence!"

Snorting, Lucian replied, "I don't have time for your bullshit."

He went into the bathroom to wash up, and after 15 minutes, the two of them left the house together.

Sitting in the front passenger seat of the Porsche, the stone-faced Giselle instructed, "Before heading to the office, take me to the mall first. I need to buy a phone."

Without saying anything, Lucian drove Giselle to the mall. She went down to get her phone, but he stayed in the car and waited in silence.

Half an hour later, she got back in with two identical paper bags. As she booted up a new phone, she said, "Start driving to the office."

"You bought two phones?" Lucian asked.

"That's right. Since you refuse to apologize, I'm giving Eddie a new phone to make it up to him. It's just a thousand dollars. Don't tell me you're going to get jealous over something like that," Giselle declared in a righteous tone as she eyed Lucian with a frown.

He simply stared at her for a few seconds before chuckling softly. "Do whatever you want."

After last night, he'd come to realize a lot of things. Be it people or relationships, he would do his best to hold onto what he could. But if something was meant to flow through his fingers like sand, he would let it go.

"Well, then… you're not allowed to throw my phone anymore—and Eddie's too!"

Giselle eyed Lucian suspiciously. There was something about him that seemed a little different today, but she couldn't put into words what the change was.

"Alright." Lucian nodded.

Giselle exhaled in relief. Regardless of what the change was, at least he wasn't picking on Edward anymore, so it was a good thing.

Smiling, she said, "Oh, stop pouting. You should cheer up! It's only a week before we have our pre-wedding photoshoot. For the next few days, we need to be in a good mood and get as much rest as we can, so that we'll look our best that day. It's a once-in-a-lifetime occasion!"

"I know," Lucian replied.

"Hmph. It sounds like you're just brushing me off!" Giselle snapped in dissatisfaction.

Lucian said nothing as he continued to drive them to the office.

Heathleaf Tower, the headquarters of Heathleaf Corporation, was located on Redwood Street in Southspire. Even though the company was valued at over a billion dollars, the office building only had 16 floors.

Lucian's office was on the 12th floor, while Giselle's office was on the top floor.

When the elevator doors opened on the 12th floor, Lucian moved to step out when Giselle complained, "You haven't kissed me, darling!"

Everyone else who saw this scene pretended not to notice. Almost everyone in the office knew that Lucian was set to become the chairman's son-in-law. He and Giselle often showed their affection in public, so the employees were used to it.

Giselle beamed when Lucian turned back around, but he simply smoothed her hair, saying, "Your hair got a little messy here."

After saying that, he walked off. Standing in the elevator, Giselle huffed, feeling somewhat miffed.

Lucian went to his office and threw himself into work. His main task for the day was reviewing the work done by the employees in the sales department and approving the reports they submitted to him. Before he knew it, over an hour had passed, and he'd basically wrapped up the work he had on hand.

Sitting in his chair, he pulled out his phone. After opening his chat with Giselle, he stared blankly at it.

Upstairs, Giselle was also lost in thought. She took out her new phone to give Lucian a call, but she'd only just pressed the call button before quickly terminating it.

"If either one of us is going to call the other, you should be the one doing it! You're the one who hurt me, you violent monster! I'm pregnant with your baby, and yet you smashed my phone! Hmph!"

Giselle frowned, getting angrier the more she thought about the situation. She didn't want to just put up with his attitude. It would only end up giving her an aneurysm.

Just then, Lacey Hines, Giselle's assistant, knocked on the door and came in, saying softly, "Ms. Lambert, Mr. Cobb is here to see you. He's in the elevator on his way up now."

Giselle stood up immediately, looking rather surprised. "Eddie is here? He can't move around easily. Why did he come over by himself?"

She rushed out of her office to meet Edward at the elevator herself.

Normally, visitors had to make an appointment to see Giselle. But Edward had obviously come by the office many times before. Lacey knew Giselle would never turn him away, so she told the receptionist at the lobby to let him come up.

Soon, the elevator doors opened.

As soon as Giselle saw the wheelchair-bound Edward, she said, "Why didn't you tell me you were coming, Eddie?"

She walked into the elevator and wheeled him out.

"It's okay," Edward said with a light chuckle. "I was feeling bored, so I decided to come and see you."

As she wheeled him into her office, she asked in concern, "Shouldn't you be in the hospital? Why have you been discharged?"

"I'm fine," Edward declared with a wave of his hand. "I asked the doctor, and he said I'm perfectly alright. I just have to avoid drinking any more alcohol."

After exhaling in relief, Giselle took out the bag containing the new phone from her desk and said with a smile, "This is for you, Eddie."

Edward checked the bag before exclaiming in surprise, "It's the newly released model, right? Thanks, Giselle!"

"You don't need to thank me," Giselle said. "And you shouldn't be so rash next time, Eddie. You know you can't drink any alcohol, yet you drank an entire glass of hard liquor! Were you trying to get yourself killed?"

"It's not a big deal," Edward said with an awkward chuckle. "I wasn't really thinking straight at the time. Just the thought of Lucian getting into an argument with you over something so trivial with you made me feel awful. And you're pregnant, so… I don't know what got into me then. I just somehow ended up drinking it."

Hearing this, Giselle felt even angrier at Lucian.

"You're absolutely right. Even you remember that I'm pregnant, but he had the nerve to do those things anyway… It's obvious he doesn't care about me!" she ranted angrily.

Edward hurriedly tried to appease her. "It's normal for couples to fight, Giselle. You shouldn't upset Lucian anymore! After all, you need someone to take care of you right now. What if—"

"As if he'd dare!" Giselle huffed.

Stroking her belly, she declared with a smug smile, "Don't be fooled by that nasty temper of his, Eddie. He cares about both the baby and me more than anyone else in the world!"

She figured that even if they got into a fight, it would blow over in a couple of days.

Instead of answering the question, Giselle diverted by saying, "Anyway, this matter is settled. I've already told Wyatt about the change, so you can't expect me to take it back now, right?"After staring at her for some time, Lucian sneered. "It's your company. Do whatever you want."He turned on his heels and walked off."Darling!" Giselle called out after him, but he ignored her.Once he was gone, she frowned and mumbled to herself, "What's with him? Why did he get all riled up?"She didn't think she'd done anything wrong. He was the one who threatened her with divorce and even got all cozy with another woman today. It wasn't as if she'd lashed out at him for any of that. All she did was change his position in the company, yet he was taking that attitude with her. He was completely in the wrong!…Lucian didn't head back to his office. He left the company and went back home instead. It was only after spending over an hour in the gym that his frustrations finally ebbed somewhat

"Hmph, I'm not taking her order!" Giselle said. She was still outraged. Just thinking about that shameless woman hugging her husband upset her to no end."Now you're being ridiculous," Lucian said. "It's an order worth 30 million dollars. Are you just going to turn it down even when it's real?""I don't want it!" Giselle firmly declared.Lucian's lips twitched. He knew the video of Beverly hugging him had been posted online. Giselle must've felt extremely uncomfortable after seeing it, so he didn't try to talk her out of it. He just smiled and said, "Oh, fine. Do whatever you want, as long as it makes you happy.""Now that's more like it!" Giselle shot him a playful look, and her frown was replaced with a beaming smile.Lucian checked his watch. "Well, if there's nothing else, I'll head back to my office now.""Wait!" Giselle suddenly grabbed his arm."What is it?" Lucian asked.Giselle hesitated. It was clear that she was having a hard time saying what she was about to say.

Later in the afternoon, Lucian returned to the office. Only then did he find out that someone had recorded the incident and posted it on social media. When he saw the words of praise and approval from the sales department's group chat, he got the feeling that something was fishy about the situation. However, he couldn't quite put a finger on what it was. He'd rested in his office for a while before hearing a knock on the door."Come in," he said.Lacey came in and said courteously, "Mr. Hale, Ms. Lambert wants to see you."Nodding, Lucian replied, "I'll be right there."After Lacey left, Lucian felt increasingly unsettled about the situation. Following the incident where he somehow became the hero who saved a damsel in distress, the series of events that happened afterward left him at a loss.Ten minutes later, he stepped into Giselle's office. She quickly turned her screen off and got up, saying, "You're here, darling."Nodding, he asked, "Why did you want to see me?""What d

"You're incredible, Mr. Hale!""Subduing an armed assailant with nothing but bare hands? That's Mr. Hale, alright!""Looks like the deal is as good as closed. Good job, Mr. Hale!""We should all clap for Mr. Hale!"Seeing the messages, Giselle quickly scrolled upward until she saw a link and clicked on it. Immediately, she froze, and her face went pale. She saw a woman clinging tightly to Lucian. In that instant, she felt as if something had tightened around her heart and was squeezing it tightly."Did something happen, Giselle?" Edward asked worriedly.Giselle snapped back to reality and forced a smile. "It's nothing."But of course, it was obvious from her dazed and distracted expression that something was indeed wrong.Edward's expression turned grim, and he said sternly, "Don't lie to me, Giselle. Show it to me!"Giselle's heart was clenching painfully. She silently handed her phone over to Edward, who looked just as stunned when he saw the video."Did Lucian run off… to

Edward wasn't surprised to see Giselle here. His eyes flashed with smugness. Playing hard to get always worked. It was now time for him to put on his best performance.First, he stared at Giselle, looking somewhat dazed. The mix of emotions that swirled in his eyes could almost be dissected down to the very last element. Seemingly moved by her appearance, he conveyed a mix of joy, resentment, hurt… and more. Then, he bit his lip and looked away without saying anything.Unfortunately, Giselle didn't think much of his reaction. After coming into the room, she exhaled in relief and said, "I'm glad you're fine, Eddie. Next time, you must take my calls, okay?"Staring out the window with a bitter smile on his face, Edward said, "You're the one who said we shouldn't be in touch anymore. I was worried Lucian might get upset.""That's only because of his own misunderstandings," Giselle said nonchalantly as she took a seat."Yeah." Edward nodded and said nothing more.Seeing this, Gisell

On one hand, Giselle was worried that Lucian would get angry if he found out she was contacting Edward. But on the other hand, she was worried something might have happened to Edward. In the end, she came to a decision and headed out of the office, driving straight to the hospital.…Meanwhile, Lucian had arrived at the cafe where he was supposed to meet the prospective client."I'll get down first, Shawn. Park the car and join me after," he instructed. His subordinate, Shawn Gibson, was in his early 20s and had only recently graduated from college, but he was sharp and quick-witted.Grinning, he said, "Got it, Mr. Hale."Lucian got out and walked straight into the cafe.In the corner, a woman who was about 30 years old spotted him. Her eyes brightened, and she immediately stood up to greet him. "Excuse me. Are you Mr. Hale from Heathleaf Corporation? It's such a pleasure to meet you!"She was the client, Beverly Lockwood, and she seemed to be the rather friendly type. She eag
