Hannah pov

It was past midnight.

Rain lashed against the glass of the high-rise buildings, and darkness seemed to swallow the desolate commercial district as I fled through the storm.

My ankles were swollen, my breath coming in ragged gasps, and every muscle in my body throbbed with unbearable agony.

I knew I couldn’t stop—not until I put enough distance between myself and my past.

Even though I was almost certain I’d thrown Gabriel ’s security team off my trail, I kept looking over my shoulder in absolute panic.

Exhausted and shivering, I finally collapsed into the shadow of a closed boutique overhang, gasping for air.

Across the street stood the massive illuminated boundary sign marking the district line:

Welcome to Kingsbridge—the private corporate empire controlled entirely by the Vance family.

I stared at the sign in disbelief.

I had fled miles on foot, but crossing into Kingsbridge felt like stepping onto dangerous turf.

The city streets beyond that line were unnaturally quiet, bathed in the sharp, cold glow of neon lights and high-tech security cameras.

In the distance, I heard the faint wail of police sirens and the low rumble of black SUVs prowling the main avenue.

Gabriel ’s men were sweeping the streets, eager to drag me back.

Unlike my stepbrother, who inherited a sprawling corporate empire, I had been systematically stripped of my inheritance, kept weak and dependent for years.

I didn’t stand a chance if his head of security caught me.

Should I turn back? The thought flashed through my mind, but I instantly recoiled.

I would rather collapse on these cold, wet pavements than be dragged back into Gabriel ’s gilded cage.

Taking a trembling breath, my heels crossed the boundary line into Kingsbridge.

Instantly, the hair on the back of my neck stood up.

A heavy, commanding presence seemed to settle in the rain-soaked air.

I had heard rumors about Kingsbridge and its notorious CEO, James Vance.

People warned that stepping into his territory without authorization was financial and social suicide.

James was ruthless, an unstoppable force in global finance, and a sworn rival of my father’s legacy.

A heavy shadow fell across the slick pavement directly behind me.

A surge of panic shot through my chest like electric shock.

Was this it? Was my life over?

I turned slowly. Standing at the entrance of a private alleyway was a tall, imposing figure.

Silver, piercing eyes locked onto mine through the shadows.

He stepped under the glow of a streetlamp, revealing sharp, sculpted features, a razor-sharp jawline, dark hair pulled tightly back, and broad shoulders clad in a tailor-made obsidian suit.

James Vance was every bit the terrifying tyrant they described. His overwhelming aura sent a wave of pure dread crashing over me.

"What are you doing in my district, little one?" his voice cut through the heavy downpour, smooth as expensive whiskey and cold as ice.

I opened my mouth, but no sound came out.

Behind him, several heavily armed personal security guards stepped forward from the shadows, their hands resting on their holstered weapons, waiting for his command.

Panic took over. I spun around on my sore, bleeding feet and tried to run, pushing through the heavy rain.

I didn't care about the pain—I just wanted to survive.

"Bring her to me!" James’s booming command echoed down the street, cutting through the thunder.

Lightning illuminated the sky as rain drenched me completely.

I sprinted blindly into an alley, but my heel caught on an uneven cobblestone.

I tumbled hard onto the cold pavement, striking my head.

When I looked up, James’s towering silhouette stood over me. Then, everything went pitch black.

When I finally opened my eyes, I was lying in a king-sized bed inside a luxurious penthouse suite. Soft ambient light flickered from a marble fireplace in the corner.

"You thought you could run away from me?" a voice purred from the dark corner of the room.

I gasped, pulling the silk sheets up to my chest as James stepped into the warm glow of the fireplace.

He had shed his suit jacket, his crisp white shirt unbuttoned at the collar, his hands loosely tucked into his trouser pockets.

A dark, dangerous smile played on his lips.

"Who... who are you?" I stammered, backing myself up against the leather headboard.

"You know who I am, Hannah," he said softly, walking slowly toward the bed.

"And you know you have nowhere else to go."

He reached down, his large, warm hand gently gripping my sore ankle to inspect my bruised skin.

A sudden, electric shock sizzled through my skin at his touch, sending a tremor straight up my spine.

I tried to pull my leg away, but his grip remained firm yet surprisingly gentle.

"I'm not going to hurt you," James murmured, his silver eyes searching mine.

"You're terrified. But you're safe here."

"Safe?" I let out a breathless, skeptical laugh. Safe with you? You're a monster, James Vance.

I've read the news. You destroy anyone who stands in your way.

James let out a low scoff, releasing my ankle and walking over to a mahogany bar cart. He poured himself two fingers of crystal-clear scotch.

"If I wanted to destroy you, Hannah, you would already be ruined," he said evenly, taking a slow sip.

“Instead, my private doctor spent the last three hours stabilizing you. Do you have any idea what was in your system?"

"What do you mean?" I asked, my voice barely a whisper.

"A toxic combination of micro-dosed tranquilizers and sedatives," James said, his gaze turning as cold as steel.

"Someone has been slow-poisoning you for years. It's a miracle you were even capable of walking tonight, let alone running."

My stomach dropped. Gabriel .

The nightly 'vitamin' supplements he forced me to take ever since my father passed away.

He had been keeping me sick and compliant so I couldn't claim my shares in the family enterprise.

James set his glass down on the side table and stepped back to the edge of the mattress.

He reached out, his long fingers gently brushing a strand of damp hair away from my face.

"What happened to you, Hannah?" he asked quietly, his eyes thoroughly taking in every shadow under my eyes.

"Let me go," I pleaded, trying to keep my voice steady.

"Please. Just let me leave."

"A 'thank you' would suffice for saving your life," James replied dryly.

"I don't usually grant sanctuary to trespassers. Especially not to Carlos 's daughter. You can't hide your identity from me, you know."

"I'm not trying to hide!" I snapped defensively.

"Then tell me," James said, leaning down so his face was inches from mine.

“What was the heir to the Bloodhound Media empire doing crawling through my streets at two in the morning, half-dead and poisoned?"

"I... I was lost," I lied, unable to hold his intense gaze.

"Don't lie to me!" James snapped, his voice sharp with authority.

"I know when people lie to me, little one. And my patience is wearing thin."

"I ran away!" I blurted out, tears welling up in my eyes.

"I ran away from my family! I don't belong there anymore... Gabriel  took everything from me!"

James's expression softened slightly, his thumb tenderly wiping a stray tear from my cheek.

"Did Gabriel  do this to you?" he asked softly.

"It doesn't matter who did it," I whispered, shivering at his touch.

"As long as I don't go back, I'm safe."

"Hannah," James murmured, his voice sending a strange, magnetic hum through my chest.

“The orphaned girl whose family pushed her into the shadows after her mother died."

"I didn't kill my mother!" I said quickly, my breath hitching as panic threatened to overtake me again.

“She died during childbirth—it wasn't my fault!"

"I know," James said quietly, resting a broad, soothing hand over my shoulder. "I know it wasn't."

I looked up into his silver eyes.

Despite his cold reputation, the way he looked at me right now felt unnaturally intense, almost overwhelming.

A sudden warmth flared in my chest—an unexplainable connection that made my heart hammer against my ribs.

Was it possible?

Was this powerful, dangerous billionaire the one man who could actually protect me?

"Please," I whispered, clutching my hands together.

"Just... don't hurt me."

James reached out and took my small, trembling hands into his large ones.

"I won't harm you," he said in a deep, gravelly voice.

"Infact, I'm going to save you. You are never going back to Gabriel”.

"Why would you do that for me?" I asked, suspicious despite the flutter in my stomach.

"What's the catch?"

"If you stay here, under my roof, my security team will protect you from Gabriel  and anyone else who dares cross you”.

James murmured, stepping closer until his shadow completely enveloped me.

"But you will owe me."

"Owe you what?" I asked, searching his unreadable face.

"I have no money. No power."

"Soon enough, you'll find out," James replied, releasing my hands and walking toward the bedroom door.

He paused at the threshold, looking back over his shoulder.

"Get some rest now, Hannah. You're in safe hands."

The heavy door clicked shut behind him, leaving me alone in the vast, luxurious room.

I pressed my hand against my beating heart, wondering if I had truly escaped the monster from my past—or simply walked straight into the lair of a far more dangerous one.

James povThe morning chill draft drifted past the sheer silk curtains, filling the expansive master suite with a cold, oppressive emptiness.I reached out blindly across the high-thread-count sheets before slowly opening my eyes. She wasn't there. It was the morning after our scheduled bi-weekly encounter, and usually, without fail, Hannah would still be curled up beside me. She had a habit of softly pressing herself into my side in her sleep, holding onto me as though she were terrified the monsters of her past would drag her back into the dark. When I awoke on those mornings, her delicate forehead would be resting against my chest, her soft hair tangled across my arms, and her faint vanilla perfume clinging to the pillows.Today, the bed was cold. Her scent was completely gone.A strange, unsettling weight settled in the pit of my stomach as I sat up, running a hand through my hair."Hannah?" I called out, my deep voice sounding unnaturally loud in the quiet room.Silence answe

Hannah povThe cool medical gel spread across my lower abdomen, sending a slight chill through my body as Dr. Rose glided the ultrasound wand over my skin. The soft, rhythmically whooshing sound echoed around the quiet private clinic suite. My eyes never left Dr. Rose's face as she stared intently at the monitor.I knew I would be able to read her expression before she even spoke. The air in the room was thick with anticipation. I squeezed my eyes shut and pressed a hand against my chest, my heart pounding so wildly it felt as if my whole life had been leading up to this single moment. Was I finally carrying James’s child? It was foolish, really. I had broken the cardinal rule of our arrangement: I had fallen deeply in love with a man who was entirely out of my reach. I was an orphaned, discarded heiress with nothing to my name, while James Vance was the feared CEO of a multi-billion-dollar empire. Our families had been ruthless corporate rivals for generations. We were doomed

You are special, my sweet girl."I wanted so badly to believe her. But after losing my mother at birth, learning what severe abuse meant before my tenth birthday, and being systematically stripped of my life by my stepbrother, "special" felt like a cruel joke. My grandmother had been the only person in that cold estate who protected me. But when my stepmother, Janet , manipulated my father into locking her away in a private care facility, I lost my only ally.Sitting in the grand, wood-paneled boardroom of the Vance Conglomerate three weeks after my escape, my grandmother’s words echoed faintly in my mind.Across the long mahogany table sat Bernard Vance, the billionaire patriarch and founder of the company. Hannah povIn the gilded world of New Orleans elite society, I was meant to be treated like royalty—the rightful heiress to the multimillion-dollar Vance empire. But behind the towering wrought-iron gates of the Vance Estate, my life was anything but glamorous. I was practically a glorified maid in my own home."Look at you, lingering around like a shadow," my stepmother Janet sneered one afternoon as she tossed a heavy leather binder onto the kitchen island. "You have your mother’s pathetic blue eyes and that infuriating smile. It’s a miracle your father can stand looking at you."My father, Carlos Vance, had never forgiven me. My mother died during childbirth, and in his overwhelming grief, he blamed me for taking the love of his life. The high-society tabloids ran wild with the story, branding me as the curse that shattered the Vance legacy."Why are you standing there gaping, Hannah?" Janet barked, snapping her fingers sharply. The catering staff left the ballroom in a sta
