The safehouse did not feel safe.

It was too small, too bare - one bed, one bathroom, a kitchenette that looked like it had not been used in years, Voss Biotech owned a dozen of places like this. Lucien called it off-grid and I called it a gilded cage with better locks.

Theo was two rooms down, sedated and stable, Lucien's medic had done what she could, Kael had not left his side since we got here and I had not asked why.

Lucien sat on the edge of my bed, watching me like I might vanish if he blinked. His rut had passed but the tension had not, we were both drowning in instinct.

"You should rest", he said quickly.

"So should you, you look like hell", I shot back.

He almost smiled at that.

I pulled my knees up to my chest, resting my chin on them, the silence between us was not comfortable, it was loaded, every word felt like it could tip us one way or the other.

"Why me ", I asked finally.

Lucien stared at me . "What?".

"Out of everyone in this city, why did you fixate on me? there are registered omegas with better scents and better training, I am a problem and a liability.

His face became calm and he spoke softer.

"Because the Alpha in me chose you, because you are not like others you are different in a good way".

I barked a laugh. "That's a terrible reason".

"Maybe, but it's the truth". He leaned forward, elbow's on his knees.

I looked away, the truth did not help, the truth made it harder to walk away.

My phone buzzed, Lucien's eyes flickered to it, but he didn't move to grab it, I did.

Unknown number again, one line: You can't hid forever, Enigma.

My stomach dropped, Lucien show my face change. "What is it?".

"Someone knows, they know who I am, where I am probably", i said holding up my phone.

Lucien's expression darkened, and took my phone from my hand.

"Encrypted?", he asked

"Burner, no trace", I said.

"Then we move tonight before they can act", he said.

I shook my head, "We can't move, theo can't move yet.

"We have no choice ".

"We always have a choice and i am not leaving him", I said standing.

Lucien stared at me for a long moment, then he sighed, running a hand through his hair.

"Stubborn ",he muttered.

"You have no room to talk".

He stepped closser, stopping just short of touching me, his scent flared-protective, possessive, edged with something that made my pulse spike.

"Rian, if they take you, I won't get you back". He said quietly.

The honesty in his voice Shook me more than any threat could. " I know", I wishpered.

For a second I thought he would kiss me I had already closed my eyes waiting for the kiss but he didn't, I was so pissed but i controlled it, his forehead rested against mine instead and he exhaled like he had been holding his breath for day's.

"Then stay close, please", he said.

I nodded, it was stupid and dangerous but I couldn't bring myself to say no.

The opened without a knock. Kael filled the frame, face drawn, eyes shadowed, he look like he had not slept in days.

"He is awake, he wants to see you", Kael said, voice rough.

I moved past Lucien without a word, heading to Theo's room. Theo smiled weakly, when I entered, his color was better, his scent was still off but stable, he looked fragile.

"You are an idiot", he said instead of hello.

I grinned, "I have missed you too buddy".

He laughed, then winced, "Kael said you helped me with the heat".

"Someone had to", I said.

Theo studied me for a long moment.

"Why are you still here, Rian?".

The question hit harder than it should have.

"Because you are my friend and because if I leave, Kael might kill you, and you should know this, I will never leave you again, not anymore, you are stock with me forever.

Theo's eyes flickered to the doorway where Kael was standing just out of sight.

"He wouldn't, not anymore ". Theo said quietly.

I didn't answer that, I didn't know if it was true.

Theo reached out grabbing my hand, his finger's were cold.

"Thank you for coming back for me", he said

I squeezed his hand. "Always".

He fell asleep few minutes later, breathing even, safe for the first time in weeks.

When Ieft the room, Kael was waiting we stared at each other for a long moment.

"You saved him", he said almost whispering.

"So did you ", I replied.

Kael shook his head. "I would have let him die if it meant keeping protocol ". The honesty stung, he continued. "But not anymore".

I studied him, the guilt in his eyes was real, the exhaustion was real. "Why?", I asked.

"Because i already loosed him once and I don't want that again", he replied.

I didn't know what to say to that so I said nothing.

LUCIEN POV

I was so angry standing here looking at Rian and Kael standing so close to each other talking and I couldn't hear anything, I just went and stood behind Rian, my hand brushing his lower back just for a second, a reminder that I am here, staring at Kael with an angry eye.

Kael saw it but he didn't say anything.

"Get some rest, we move at dawn",he said to Rian.

Rian nodded and worked away, I followed him.

Neither of us spoke until we were back in Rian's room. The door closed with a soft click, I turned to him, eyes dark.

"You trust him", I asked.

"No but i trust Theo", he said.

I nodded slowly, "Good enough ".

I reached out, tucking a strand of his hair behind his ear, with a careful gesture, I wanted to kiss him but i don't want him to feel like i am taking advantage of him so I kissed his forehead instead.

"Get some sleep Rian. I whispered in his ear, one thing was for sure he wanted to argue but I didn't give him the space, and he was already too tired.

He nodded and climbed into the bed, I didn't leave I sat on the edge of the bed watching him until his eyes grew heavy.

"I have got you". That was the last thing I said to him before sleep took him.

For one second, he simply looked down. Then up. Then at me. "Oh," Lucien said. I went white. Theo froze with a spoon halfway to Aria's bottle warmer. Kael stood so fast his chair nearly tipped. Three guards appeared at the doorway as if summoned by instinct. Lucien inhaled carefully. "No one panic." I turned toward the hall and shouted, "Doctor!" I had already lifted him from the chair. "Rian, the maternity suite is upstairs, not across an active battlefield." "Doctor!" Kael moved toward the comm panel. "Medical team already alerted." Theo stood, clutching Aria. "Is this too fast? Should Aria be in the room? Should I be in the room?" Lucien pointed weakly at him. "I said don't panic." I carried Lucien toward the stairs. Lucien clutched my shoulder as a contraction began, stronger than the ones from the night before. He buried his face in my neck and breathed. I stopped halfway up the stairs. "What? What is wrong?" Lucien groaned. "If stopping on stairs becomes the p

  • SCENTBOUND   Chapter 66 - After the Darkness

KAEL POV The hospital doors opened before the convoy fully stopped. Medics rushed Ilyana through first. Eli followed as far as the trauma doors before two nurses stopped him. He stood there in blood-stained clothes, shaking, watching through the narrow window as doctors surrounded Ilyana. "She needs the antidote monitored," Eli said hoarsely. "It was administered in the facility, but she needs serum stabilization every four hours. Damien kept the dose intervals irregular to make withdrawal worse. There's a second vial in the case. Third one too. They have to test liver markers, neural response, cardiac rhythm—" A doctor took the black medical case from me and opened it beneath the lights. "Who administered the first dose?" "I did," Eli said. The doctor looked at the injection log, then at Ilyana through the glass. "Then it bought her time." Eli gripped the back of a plastic chair and bowed his head. Across the hall, Lucien was being wheeled toward the maternity wing un

  • SCENTBOUND   Chapter 65 — The Price of Survival

RIAN POVThe shot struck Damien in the center of the chest. Damien staggered backward. His eyes widened, more offended than afraid, as if death itself had no authorization to touch him. The remote fell from his hand and clattered against the floor. His pistol slipped from Eli's grip and landed near the broken desk. I kicked it away before anyone else could move. Damien tried to speak. No words came. He just stared at Eli with disbelief. He couldn't understand why something he controlled would choose someone else. Then he collapsed onto the black floor and did not move again.Silence.Then the building seemed to exhale around us. The alarms still wailed. Gunfire still echoed faintly in distant corridors. Smoke still curled at the shattered doorway. But Damien Voss was dead. Finally. Lucien made a sound halfway between a sob and a gasp. I turned to him. The relief that tore through the bond was so violent it became pain. Lucien buried his face against my chest, tre

  • SCENTBOUND   Chapter 64 - Redemption and Sacrifice

RIAN POVThe gun came out fast. Aimed at me. The room snapped into motion. Kael fired, but Damien jerked sideways at the same instant, the shot striking the black desk in a burst of splinters and sparks. Damien's pistol flashed. A white blur crossed the doorway.Ilyana.Somehow free from the monitor room, she threw herself between Damien's gun and me before anyone could stop her. The shot cracked through the office. Ilyana cried out. Blood sprayed across her pale hand. She staggered, clutching her wrist, the bullet tore through the flesh of her palm instead of my chest. The force spun her sideways, and she dropped hard to one knee on the floor. For one suspended heartbeat, no one breathed. Then Lucien screamed. "Ilyana!" He tore away from me. I caught him, but Lucien was already moving, propelled by panic, pain, and the impossible stubbornness that had kept him alive through every trap. He gripped the edge of the chair he had been tied to moments before, then pushed onward

  • SCENTBOUND   Chapter 63 - The Experiment

RIAN POVKael went still. The name passed through him like a bullet. Damien's voice went quiet. "Careful." I did not stop. "Elio D. 16 years old. Your first son. Weak lungs. Unstable scent receptors. Inconsistent pheromone development. A child treated as failed material because his body did not satisfy Black Crown's expectations." Eli stared at Damien in horror. Damien's mouth curled. "Sentiment ruins accuracy." "Elio died in the north facility during an illegal stress trial," I said. "Not an accident." Kael's breathing changed. For years, guilt had lived inside him like shrapnel. A dead boy. A falsified security failure. A whispered accusation never fully proven, never fully erased. My next words opened it. "Damien, you killed your first son and framed Kael for it." Kael's eyes shifted slowly to Damien. The rifle remained raised, but something behind it fractured. "No, how can Elio be his son." Kael said. My voice was merciless. "Access logs altered. Internal cameras

  • SCENTBOUND   Chapter 62 - The Truth Unleashed

RIAN POVThe monitor bled cold light across the black office. On the screen, Eli knelt on a concrete floor with his hands bound behind his back, blood drying at the corner of his mouth. His coat was torn, one shoulder sagging. He looked smaller than he ever had at the estate, stripped of sarcasm, stripped of his careless cruelty, left with only the consequences of every bargain he had made.Beside him stood Ilyana.A guard held her by the arm while another pressed a gun to the back of her head. Her white dress made her look ghostlike beneath the harsh overhead lights. Trapped in yet another room built by Damien's will.Lucien's breath caught against my chest.I felt the fear through the bond before the sound reached me. It tore through the labor pain, sharp and bright. Lucien's body was already shaking from the last contraction, one arm gripping my vest with white-knuckled force.Damien stood near the black desk, one hand wrapped around the slim remote, expression bright with satisfac

RIAN POV The alarm didn't scream, it humed. I was awake before it finished its first cycle, that's what years of running does to you. Lucien was already on his feet, gun in hand, moving toward the door. Kael was outside, shouting orders I couldn't hear through the reinforced steel. "Stay

  • SCENTBOUND   Chapter 8- Moving Targets

RIAN POV Dawn came too fast. No sunrise through the safehouse windows, just the artificial grey of pre-dawn and the low hum of the city waking up without us. Lucien had the car idling out back by 5:12 Kael was already checking out the main exits, moving like a man who had slept with one eye o
