Laila's POV

I stared at the box but I couldn't see it.

It was easier said than done. I was desperate but now the adrenaline had stopped rushing through me, now that my son was safe. Logic prevailed.

How was I to get in bed with a man I’d only known for weeks?

He didn't just want the pleasure of intimacy, he wanted children.

I already had a child whose future was uncertain and I was to birth others?

“My lady?”

The voice was soft but it pulled me back to the present like a slap. I blinked, realizing I’d been staring at the box since I looked at it. too. Teal stood a few feet away, her hands clasped, her expression laced with worry.

“My lady, are you okay?” she asked again, stepping closer.

I swallowed hard, forcing a small nod. “Yes,” I murmured quickly, my voice hoarse. “I’m fine.”

But even I could hear the lie in it. I snapped the lid shut and dropped the box onto the bed.

Teal’s gaze flicked to the bed, to the open box, to me again. I could tell she wanted to ask—but didn’t dare.

    Laila's POV After eating, we proceeded to his room. I told him I needed privacy for what I was about to say.
