Laila's POV

I gasped and jumped at the sound, scampering towards it. I was inspecting its wing when a shriek stopped me in my tracks.

I looked up just in time to see a massive shadow sweep across the flowers.

“It’s the mother my lady,” Teal yelled and I raised my hand to show I meant no harm.

She was much larger up close, her wings spreading wide in a shimmer of rainbow light. She descended fast, her cry deafening. The ground trembled as she landed a few feet away, pushing me backward. Her eyes glowed.

The small Phoenix let out a weak chirp, its head lifting toward its mother. She moved closer, her long neck bending down, nostrils flaring as she sniffed at the tiny creature.

Then, to my shock, she turned her gaze on me.

My breath caught. I didn’t move. I just stayed there, still as stone. The air around her shimmered with heat, but she didn’t lash out. She stepped aside slightly, as if… letting me near.
