Laila's POV

“The era of burning witches is over,” I said firmly, forcing my voice to stay steady even though my heart felt like it was splitting open from exhaustion and disgust and disappointment all at once. “I won’t let it happen again. Not here. Not anywhere.”

The witches didn’t soften. If anything, their expressions hardened further, anger carving itself deeper into their faces. But before any of them could spit more hatred at me, a familiar voice echoed from behind.

“Kieran already said he’ll spare them,” Daphne scoffed, stepping into view with her arms crossed. Her tone dripped with mockery. “If he really meant that, why are they still locked up like animals?”

I clenched my fists, swallowing back the sharp retort that rose instantly. Daphne always knew where to poke, where to press, where to make the wound sting.
