CHAPTER SIX

MAVERICK

“Mate,” I hear my wolf call out.

I freeze.

Mate? What mate?

“Jax, go back to sleep,” I mutter.

Our mate is dead. Even after all these years, my wolf and I are still grieving. But today is not about us.

Then my nose catches that scent again, and Jax starts howling happily inside my head. I can feel how badly he wants out.

My senses sharpen instantly—my vision becomes clearer, my hearing more acute, my nose picking up scents faster than normal. I know I could shift at any moment.

“Jax, stop!” I say, struggling to restrain both myself and my wolf, which is never an easy task.

I scan my surroundings quickly, trying to locate the source of the scent. It’s close—too close—and whatever it is has my wolf on edge.

“Mate, mate, mate, mate,” Jax sings in my head, and a pounding headache follows.

I look around furiously, and then I see her.

Standing at the entrance of the Mate Meeting Arena is a beautiful woman dressed in purple. Her long curly hair cascades down her back, and she seems almost unreal, shrouded in a soft golden glow. The word echoes again and again in my head.

Mate. Mate. Mate.

I stare at her in shock, and our eyes meet. Her blue eyes widen in alarm. Without hesitation, she turns and runs, bumping into people as she pushes through the crowd.

“Stop!” I shout, taking off after her at insane speed.

She runs faster, her clothes tearing as she shifts mid-stride into her wolf—a stunning snow-white wolf. She bolts out of the pack territory and into the woods.

I shift as well, my wolf bursting free. As an Alpha, my wolf is larger and stronger. I chase her relentlessly, desperate to know who she is and how it’s even possible that she could be my mate. I catch up quickly and leap, tackling her to the ground to stop her from escaping.

She shifts back into her human form, unconscious—and naked.

I shift back too, just as exposed. I immediately look away and scan the area for clothes. Every pack keeps spare clothing hidden in the woods for situations like unexpected shifting or emergencies.

“You are an asshole,” Jax growls angrily. “Did you really have to jump on her like that?”

“If I hadn’t, she would’ve gotten away,” I reply, guilt weighing heavily on me. “I didn’t mean to hit her that hard.”

“If you had given me control, this wouldn’t have happened,” Jax snaps. “You’re too stubborn.”

“I’m confused,” I say, rubbing my hands over my face. “How is it possible for us to have another mate? This is crazy.”

“I don’t know either,” Jax admits. “I’ve never heard of anyone having two mates.”

“Let’s go back to the pack. Maybe someone can explain this,” I say, pulling on a pair of jeans and a shirt that miraculously fit. I wrap the woman—my mate—in a blanket. The word feels strange in my mind.

I lift her into my arms and begin walking back. I could run, but I need the time to think, to clear my head.

When we reach the pack entrance, several people are already waiting. Clearly, many witnessed what happened. I recognize Alpha Allen and his family, the beta and his wife—who looks eerily like the woman in my arms.

Before I can react, the woman rushes forward, snatches the unconscious girl from me, and runs into the pack.

“Alpha Maverick, you need to explain yourself,” Alpha Allen says as he approaches, struggling to keep his tone calm and respectful.

“Can we do this somewhere private?” I ask, glancing at the crowd. “This conversation should happen indoors. The pack can learn the details later.”

Without waiting for approval, I walk inside. They follow.

“Let’s go to the beta house since this concerns him directly,” Alpha Allen says, guiding us there.

The moment the beta opens the door, my senses are overwhelmed by her scent. She lives here.

I step inside and turn around, only to meet the hostile stares of everyone present—Alpha Allen, his Luna, their two children, and the beta.

“We’re waiting for your explanation,” the Alpha’s daughter says angrily.

“Beta…” I begin, unsure of his name.

“Beta Corey,” he snaps. “Get to the point, Alpha Maverick. Why did my daughter run away after seeing you? Why did you chase her? And why did you return with her unconscious in your arms?”

“Well…” I say awkwardly, rubbing the back of my neck. “We found out we are mates.”

“WHAT?!” everyone shouts at once.

They stare at me like I’ve just told the worst joke imaginable. I wish it was a joke. That would mean none of this was real.

“Yes,” I say firmly. “She’s my mate. That’s why she ran. And I lost control when I chased her.”

“That’s impossible!” Beta Corey roars. “She already had a mate—and he’s dead. She’s mateless!”

Alpha Allen places a calming hand on Beta Corey’s shoulder before turning to me.

“Alpha Maverick,” he says carefully, “we need more information. Something that helps this make sense.”

“I don’t have answers,” I admit quietly. “I had a mate too.” My voice shakes. “I lost her years ago—along with our unborn child.”

Silence crashes over the room.

Then heavy footsteps thunder toward the door, filled with rage.

“Shit—she’s here!” the Alpha’s son says nervously.

“Who?” I ask.

“Roseline!” Alpha Allen shouts. “Corey, hold her!”

Everyone scatters with supernatural speed, leaving me behind.

“Is she a threat?” I ask, preparing to follow—

“STOP!” they all shout.

The door explodes open, hanging loosely on its hinges. A woman stands there—Jasmine’s mother—half shifted, with wolf ears, fangs, and claws visible. She launches toward me at terrifying speed.

Before she reaches me, Beta Corey grabs her, lifting her off the ground until she calms enough for him to release her.

“WHAT DID YOU DO TO MY DAUGHTER?!” she growls, her wolf pushing dangerously close to the surface.

JASMINEIt's Mate meeting day, and Daisy, Eva, and I are in my room getting dressed. Daisy bought a maroon-colored Mermaid dress, Eva bought a blue-colored dress, and I bought a short purple halter-neck bodycon dress with a slit at the front. I look at myself in the mirror; my complexion looks better, my round face looks pretty, my pouty lips are shiny, and my full curly hair hangs down my back. “I look beautiful,” I mutter to myself, “I can’t believe this is me.” “Well, that’s you, and you indeed look fabulous, cute, and sexy,” says Eva as she hugs me from behind. “I’m sure a lot of eyes will be on you,” Daisy says with a wink.I’m sure too, now that my mate passed, a lot of men who have not gotten their mate will try to ask for my hand. I don’t think I’m ready for that. I just want to live for myself. For years, I’ve waited and kept myself for my mate so I can experience the never-ending love that comes with the Mate bond like my parents and other mated members in the pack. Now

  • SECOND MARK SECOND SOUL   CHAPTER FOUR

MAVERICKI did not have to chase them out of my house cause they left after two hours. After they left, I stood in a silent house full of memories. I met my mate Alice at the last Mate meeting, gathering my pack held. FLASHBACK…I stood at the entrance of the pack, welcoming people from other packs, when my nose picked up a very sweet cinnamon mixed with a strawberry smell. My wolf was jumping inside of me and howling happily, and I just knew that my mate was around, but I could not see her. I was not worried because I knew we would still meet inside during the gathering. After I was done welcoming people into the pack, the gathering began, and all without mates lined up, male on one side, female on the side. Instantly, people started finding their mate. I picked up that same sweet smell towards my right and walked towards the right trying to pinpoint where that smell was coming from, and I laid my eyes on her. It felt like I was in heaven. She ran into my arms, and it felt electr

  • SECOND MARK SECOND SOUL   CHAPTER THREE

MAVERICK I’m sitting in my study, looking through the pack documents and the issues that need my attention. Sheets of paper are scattered across my desk; they contain complaints from pack members, things they want changed, and new things they want included in the pack. Yes, I seek out pack members for their opinion as they are the ones that benefit from it the most, so they must be included in decision-making, and that can only be possible if I seek out their opinion. Boxes are placed around the pack grounds so that people who have opinions or complaints can write them down and put them in the boxes, and at the end of every day, I will go through them. As I was deeply into reading them, I heard a knock. “Come in,” I say, and from the smell my nose picks up, I know who's at the door. “Yo, how are you doing?” my beta Jaden says as he walks into my study, taking a seat in one of the chairs across me. “I heard you beat up another council head. How many more people are you going to be

  • SECOND MARK SECOND SOUL   CHAPTER TWO

JASMINE I lay awake in my bed feeling restless and waiting for death. With my wolf not responding to me and my mate gone, I know in just a little while I will give up the ghost, cause as a werewolf, connecting with your wolf is important, and after finding your mate and you lose him, you can never be whole again. As I lay in bed, I hear footsteps coming up the stairs, soft and familiar, and I just know it’s either my mother or my best friend, Daisy. They are the only two people who keep trying to make me come out and keep living, but without a will to live, all their effort has been in vain. “Jasmine, I’ve had enough of this.” My mum's voice cut the silence as she marched into my room, went straight to my window, and opened the blinds. Sunlight flooded the room, and the instant headache and eyeache I felt was cause I’ve been sitting in a dark room for months.“You are my child and my only child for that matter, I won’t let you fade away or die, not on my watch!” She says, pointing

MAVERICK“I feel miserable.” I flex my arms as I walk past my pack members, watching them part ways for me. No one wants to risk setting me off; they all know it won’t end well for them. Then I hear someone call my name. I turn, ready to see who’s daring enough to wake a sleeping wolf. And of course, it’s her—my mother.I walk up to her and stop right in front of her without saying a word. She doesn’t speak either, not for a whole five minutes. I have no idea why she called me.“Mama, why did you call me?” I finally ask, doing my best not to sound rude. I might be the Alpha, but my mama wouldn’t hesitate to quote “discipline me.”“Why are you trying to scare everyone, Mr. Big Bad Wolf?” she asks, smiling that smile I know isn’t a smile at all, but a warning.“Mama, how am I scaring everyone?” I respond after a few seconds.“Mr Big Bad Wolf, why are you in such a terrible mood?” she asks as she touch my arms and pulls me into her arms.“Mama! Stop calling me that and don’t hug me, I’m
