Standing before the departure section of the airport, i held my luggage in hand, eyes fixated at the crowd of people boarding the escalator.

Some were with families and others were in pairs - then, there were a few like me  whose dire wish were to flee. Only a handful wished to never return.

I heaved a long, heavy sigh. Sunlight peered through the glass, casting a shadow before me. Three days and nights of careful preparation and now i was here, standing rooted to the spot. My thoughts wandered to the times I'd sat on the floor, wondering about nothing in particular asides hate.

My tensed shoulders relaxed - almost as if a heavy burden had been put down from them. And it's right, i was no longer weighed down with the chores of being an unloved wife nor an unwanted Mom.

There were no strands of relationship binding me to that cruel pair.

I inhaled, finding this freedom more enticing than anything else in this world. As of today, i'll do things my way and with no hesitations. All i could feel was pain and an intense hatred, accompanied by an ungodly feeling of achieving my revenge even if it crushes my soul and grinds my body into bits - i couldn't be bothered to relent.

I gritted my teeth, resentment blurring my vision. I tried to hold steady as i stumbled forward when i heard my phone trilling in my coat's pocket.

Listening to that familiar ringtone, i knew it was an incoming call. I swiped my finger, simultaneously accepting it without another thought.

"Selene, where the hell are you?!" - Jason's high pitched voice came through almost instantly, a clear indication that he was pissed beyond words.

I smirked - Three days with his white moonlight and he suddenly remembers that he has a wife!.

How disappointing!. Wasn't this what he had always wanted?

Or was he trying to drag me back,so he could savor every moment of having dismembered like he had done the previous times.

I stood still, not aware of how much time had passed, a thick shroud of silence.

"Since when did my absence bother you this much?" - I spoke calmly, my voice devoid of emotions. But my clenched fists betrayed the inner turmoils of my heart.

"What the hell do you mean by that ?" - Jason snapped. " You just upped and left without a single say about your whereabouts and when i ask you about it, you fail to provide a sensible answer!"

" I'll only say this once,Get back here!!"

I scoffed, " I'm sorry,but i can't do that."- I refused him outrightly.

Jason chuckled angrily, " Selene!!. You dare...... Come home right now!. Irina was just discharged from the hospital and is now caring for the child all alone. Is this how you behave, leaving your responsibilities in the hands of an ailing lady?!" - He yelled out, a soft thud of his hands making impact with a surface reached my ears.

I created a small distance between my delicate ears and the phone, listening to him cuss out with so much agitation. A small scowl graced my face, feeling repulsed by the fact that i had now been reduced to a handmaid - easy to insult and push around.

Did he think he i'd come running just because he said so?. If it had been in the past, then sure.....but we weren't living in the past anymore.

Child...... Obligations?. Those burdens weren't mine, they're solely hers to bear.

"Jason, i wish to assume you weren't deaf the first time. I won't be coming back to that place anymore." - I rasped, flipping a strand of hair that fallen out of place.

" Who are you calling deaf?. And what dumb things are you spouting now?!" - He ranted, his voice almost hoarse from having yelled too much. "I give you five minutes...... five minutes to return home. Or i'll never let you back no matter how much you beg me to!" - He seemed too confident that i'll come crawling on all fours begging him to let me in.

I pinned my lips together, finding his lame threats barely laughable. "It's best that way, never let me back to that shit hole of a place...ever again." - I ended the call abruptly, feeling my anger and resentment spike up.

I pulled out my phone's sim, casually tossing it into a trash bin close by.

"Two years, Jason. Give me two years and all these pain i've had to endure - I'll make sure that you experience it a hundred fold. I'll leave you crumbling without a wall to lean on....."- I muttered,my voice low. " So enjoy what you've got.....now that you have them at your dispense."

******************

It was 6:15 pm when our plane touched down in Paris, France.

I stepped out of the airport, my hand buried in my coat as i pulled my  luggage which consisted of one trolley bag. I halted, taking in the fresh airs of Paris. I pulled down my sunshades, easily locating my designated driver who was waving a placard admist the teeming crowd.

I walked over, flashing a quick smile as i waved at the driver, a tall male who looked like he was in his fourties with a well trimmed beard.

"You're Miss Selene Woods?!" - He asked in french, his eyes filled with undisguised scrutiny.

"Yes,i am. It's a pleasure meeting you." - I replied in fluent french, handing him my luggage as he walked towards the car's boot.

"Please...." - He opened the car door, ushering me inside in a polite gesture.

"Thanks." - I smiled, expressing gratitude.

He got into the driver's seat, driving into the busy street. I leaned against the car's windows, staring at the orange rays of the setting sun. Paris looked utterly breathtaking this time of day - each building looking magnificent with it's unique architecture.

I felt exhausted, but never slept a wink, instead, i engaged the driver in some small talks. By nightfall, we pulled into an underground parking lot, the bright lights illuminating the driveways.

"We are here,Miss."

Richard hesitated, his long golden hair falling down his face as he withdrew. Jason hunched over, coughing as he tried catching his breath, he had this annoying victorious look that irked me to no ends. Richard stepped backwards, his head bowed in defeat. He glanced at me, desperately trying to force a genuine smile that never reached his eyes. I clenched my fists, anger brewing in chest. "Who said i'd mind. In fact, i was never here...so let him do as he pleases." - I shook my head, speaking in a cold, frosty tone. I had had enough of Jason, getting rid of him was a better solution - it was like a 'Kill one,end one free',how could i ever afford to pass out on a good deal. Richard shot me a look, a creepy smile curled on his lips. His green eyes shone with a mesmerizing light and somehow,i found it extremely contagious. I bit down my lip, trying so hard not to smile in t

I pulled up in a safe distance away, my eyes lingering on Richard's figure as he disappeared into an uncompleted high rise building, the chilling breeze tousling his black coat. I stayed put in my car for a few minutes, giving Richard a head start. Then i hopped out, quietly following his trail. Thin beads of sweat fell down my face, my knees aching as i climbed up the flight of stairs, i held on to the rusty stair railings for support. Panting as i tried catching my breath,i placed my hands over my eyes, mentally counting how many more steps I'd have to climb. I bit down my lip, determination soaring in my heart - Giving up wasn't an option, afterall, I'd come a long way. I patted my chest, sucking it up as i continued my exhausting climb up the stairs, finally reaching the small door that led to the rooftop. "How long does Mr Will wish to hide the truth?".

" Let's get a divorce!" The wind blew... and there was a thick veil of silence between us. Richard buried his hands in his pockets, his eyes no longer resting on me but on the vast sea. "The sea looks beautiful today.... it's like it's shimmering under the sun's rays. We should go to the beach someday." - He gave a warm smile, his eyes squinting. "Don't change the topic." - I spoke coolly. "Richard, let's get a divorce." - I repeated my earlier words calmly. Richard bowed his head, his long blonde hair falling down his gorgeous features. He remained like that for a moment, every moment felt strained and increasingly tensed, i almost couldn't breath. "Why?!" - He asked hoarsely. I felt stunned, ever since we got 'married'.... R

I walked, dressed in an all black outfit. The haunting melody of my heels clicking against the white tiled floors echoed in the hall. I remembered visiting the police station once- the experience was half as pleasant. I sat on a chair, staring at the transparent glass - Irina glared at me as she sat on the other end. She looked haggard, her skin pale, wearing the same old smug pride. I picked up the telephone on my end, watching her pick up hers as she brought it close to her ears. "Have prison been treating you well?." Irina raised a brow at me, her lips pursed in a thin line as she offered no response. I smiled - She had always been the type of person to cry only when she has seen the coffin. "I heard your trial is just a few days away..... and i was wondering, if you were already getting adjusted to your new environmen

  • SELENE WOODS    CHAPTER 80

News about Camille's death spread fast and soon after...her body was found. It was actually Richard's idea to place it in a very common place and that kind of made sense..... Somewhat. The gory news had the entire citizens in an uproar, some already fearing the worst. But trust the police department to give out a well, curated speech about how they're on the case and also promising that the citizens' safety was their upmost priority. Though they didn't give out the news about the killer... according to them, they're still in the middle of investigating and the culprit was yet to be determined. Detective Davis had already told me about Camille's autopsy and his suspicions about it being related to my parents mother, citing that both DNA results collected at the time, matched up perfectly. Meaning that there was a definite culprit, but that was also under thorough scrutiny. He wouldn't say any more than that , which wasn't strange given his usual tight-lipped nature. I stared a

"Selene Woods. Age: 19, gender; female. Daughter to the deceased Mr Ashley and Whitney Woods. State after accident; Critical. Date and time of accident recorded; half past nine on the twenty- fourth of July, 2014.” - The detective paused. I felt a strange chill, a thin veil of sweat covered my body. My hands which had been gripping the stirring wheel tightened, eyes lingering on the traffic lights that had now turned orange. "I also found this amongst the police records. What does Miss Selene have to say about this?" - He added. The traffic lights turned green and i smiled coldly. " What can i say about it......?." - I mused softly . " Unfortunately nothing." " As i had said earlier, i'm just a citizen with a right sense of justice. And i can only achieve that justice by aiding your work, Detective Davis. I already think that i'm on the right path, if i truly wanted to diverge...i would have done things my way from the start." - I spoke humorlessly. Detective Davis exhaled
