Avery and I finished the exam for the day and walked out of the hall. “Argh! Finally! We're done with today's exam,” Avery said as we walked. “That was exhausting.” She stretched her arms with a groan. “Oh!” She suddenly stopped like she had remembered something. “I forgot to ask,” she whispered into my ear. “What happened to your lip, Nick Walker?” I quickly turned to look at her. “I... I bit my lip accidentally,” I said, and she rolled her eyes. “Liar,” she whispered before walking ahead. I sighed as I watched her. I knew she was definitely going to figure it out. “So, what's for lunch today?” she asked, slowing down so I could catch up with her. “I don't know...” I began, just then, a guy walked up to us interrupting me. “Hey, nerd,” he called. “Someone's outside asking for the famous Nick Walker.” He walked away before I could respond. The famous Nick Walker? I shook my head and walked outside with Avery. “I wonder who's looking for you,” Avery said while I thought about it. I wasn't expecting anyone. I barely knew anyone around campus, so no one came to mind. “Nick.” I heard that familiar voice call my name. The voice was close. My heart slammed against my chest as I turned around. “Nick,” she called again. “Mum?” I muttered, my hands shaking. She smiled and pulled me into a tight hug. Then she leaned back, cupped my face in her hands, and looked at me before hugging me again. My mind went completely blank. I couldn't think. I could barely breathe. “Nick... you've grown so much,” she said with a warm smile as I struggled to catch my breath. “I'm back, now. Huh? Mum's back.“ She said. “Nick? Nick, are you okay?“ Avery asked beside me as she pulled me back from my mum. Avery kept calling my name as she hit my face softly. “Hey, Nick, stay with me.“ She said as she held me to herself. “What's wrong, Nick? Tell me what's wrong?“ Mum said as I tried to catch my breath. That evening came running in my mind as a tear slipped down my cheek. Shouldn't I be happy that Mum was back? Wasn't this the day I'd been waiting for? “I want...” I tried to tell Avery as she leaned closer so she could hear me. “I want to leave,” I whispered, and she nodded. “Please stay away from him,” Avery told her when mum tried to follow. Whispers spread around us as we walked past. A sharp headache hit me, and I clutched my head. My vision slowly began to blur. “It's okay, Nick. I'm here,” I heard Avery say. “Let's stay in Professor Grayson's office. People are still staring,” she said before knocking on his door. She knocked a few more times before Enzo finally opened it. The moment he saw me, his expression changed. “What happened to him?” he asked, stepping aside so we could come in before closing the door. I sat down on the couch while Enzo knelt in front of me. Avery quickly went to get me a glass of water. “Nick,” Enzo said, concern clear in his voice. “Look at me.” I drank the water Avery brought me before Enzo gently took the cup from my shaking hands. “I'm fine. I promise,” I whispered. I lay down on the couch and turned my back to both of them. “What happened to him?” I heard Enzo ask Avery as I fought to hold back my tears. After all these years... She was coming back? After abandoning us? After leaving us without ever looking back? I sniffled quietly as I tried so much to hold back my tears, covering my mouth to keep myself from crying out loud. ~ COUPLE HOURS LATER ~ I didn't realize when I drifted off on the couch. But this time, it felt different. I was lying somewhere comfortable. I took a slow breath and inhaled the familiar, expensive scent clinging to me. Enzo's coat was wrapped around my shoulders. A wave of relief washed over me when I realized I had fallen asleep on his lap. I let out a quiet sigh as everything that had happened that afternoon came rushing back. I still couldn't believe Mom came back. After all these years. “You want me to get you some water?” Enzo asked, pulling me out of my thoughts. I sat up halfway, his coat still draped over my arm, and turned to look at him. That was when I realized the sun had already set. “Mira... Fuck, I'm late for work,” I muttered, quickly getting to my feet. A sharp headache hit me again, making me wince as I held my head. Without saying a word, Enzo got up and brought me a glass of water. I took it from him and drank slowly. I sat on the couch while Enzo stood in front of me. “Miss Campbell went home to stay with Mira, and I already spoke to Kyle. But your mother refused to leave. She's still outside,” Enzo said. I looked up at him. Avery had probably told him everything that happened. But Mum was still outside? Does she want to see Mira too? The same child she left behind with me. I slowly wrapped my arms around Enzo's waist as he stood. He gently ran his fingers through my hair while I hugged him from where I sat. “I couldn't breathe when I saw her,” I whispered. “I want to go home.” I looked up at him, and he gave a small nod. We pulled away from each other. He shut down his computer, packed his briefcase, grabbed his keys, and picked up my bag as well. We left his office and headed to the parking lot, where I found Mum waiting outside. “Nick. I've been waiting for you. Are you alright?” she asked, looking me over with worry. I nodded and pulled Enzo's coat tighter around me. “You want to see Mira, don't you?” I asked before she could say anything else. “Mira? The baby?” she asked and quickly covered her mouth. “The baby's fine,” She let out a relieved sigh. “Thank goodness.” I scoffed quietly. Did she really think Mira wouldn't survive? Without another word, I walked toward Enzo's car and mum followed behind.NICK WALKER ©I always held Enzo close whenever we were together, and it includes this moment also.I sometimes get the fear that he might run from my arms and I can't explain where that feeling came from.Maybe I wasn't wrong to feel that way. For a moment, it felt like I was about to lose him.But he was here again, his tongue stuck in mine. He pulled away from me and stared at my bleeding wrist. The cloth wrapped around it was already soaked with blood. He let out a sigh and turned to leave, but I quickly grabbed his shirt. He looked back at me and ruffled my hair, giving me a short smile before gently removing my hand from his shirt. Then he walked out of the gym, leaving me alone.I stared down at my wrist. It hurt, but I barely registered the pain.My mind was too focused on Enzo.I couldn't stop thinking about him.I looked across the large gym and noticed cigarettes and ashes scattered across the floor.Everything was a mess. It looked like he had been here all day. What was
NICK WALKER ©After my conversation with Mr. Kyle that day, I still couldn't get hold of Enzo for another three days.Mr. Kyle wasn't letting me see him because his men kept stopping me. Even when he left his office, one thing or another always stopped me from getting to him.My head was a mess. Back at home, I had planned a small outing for Mira and Mom without telling either of them. But it turned into a failure, just like I expected.Mira and I had a fight before I left home for work.Enzo still wasn't replying to my messages.I pressed my lips together and stared at the entrance of the bar."What's got you thinking?" Shawn asked as he stood in front of the counter."Ah. Nothing, really," I said with a forced smile.I suddenly spotted Mr. Kyle leaving his office upstairs with his men. I quickly grabbed my phone."Where are you going?" Shawn asked as I left my station.“Uh, the bathroom. Cover for me for a while,” I told him before walking outside. Before I could get to him, his men
NICK WALKER ©The exams were over, and the holiday had finally started. But I hadn't been able to reach Enzo for the past three days.He hadn't come to my house, and I hadn't seen him at work either. He wasn't replying to my texts or answering my calls.I couldn't stop worrying.I just wanted to know if he was okay. Was he sick?“Aren't you going to eat?” Avery asked as we sat down for lunch.I sighed as I stared at the food in front of me.“If you're not going to eat it, give it to me,” Avery said, pulling my plate toward herself.Seriously? Before she could take another bite, Mira smacked the back of Avery's hand with her spoon and pulled the plate back to me.“Ow! That hurt.”“Mira, apologize,” I said quickly as I took Avery's hand to check it.“How did you even choose her as your friend?” Mira asked, shaking her head as she continued eating.“He wasn't eating. You didn't have to be so harsh,” Avery said, rubbing the spot where Mira had hit her.“Well... sorry,” Mira mumbled.Avery
LORENZO GRAYSON \ VADIM KERZHAKOV ©My phone had been ringing nonstop the entire drive home. It was still ringing when I walked through the front door. I tossed it across the spacious living room and headed upstairs.I grabbed a travel bag and opened the drawer to get my passport. Then I looked at my reflection before sliding the mirror aside, revealing the weapons hidden behind it.I picked a few of them and reached for my phone again. I'd already sent Kyle a message, asking him to book me a flight back to Russia.I rushed back downstairs and searched for the phone I'd thrown across the living room.“Where the fuck is it?” I yelled as I searched the lounge and the kitchen connected to it.Just then, I heard a car screech to a stop outside the house. It was Kyle.I grabbed my bag and hurried to his car.“The ticket?” I asked as I walked up to him.“What's going on?” he asked.I ran a hand through my hair and let out a frustrated sigh.“Kyle, I fucking need the ticket.”“Not until you
LORENZO GRAYSON\ VADIM KERZHAKOV©“Do you mind heading home yourself? There's something I have to do before leaving.“ I told Alina.I packed the papers and carried my briefcase.“What's the matter? I could wait.“ She said.“You should go. It'll take a while.“ I said.I clenched my hands on the device in my palm as I headed to the office.I needed to know what was on the drive.I unlocked the door, walked over to my laptop, and plugged it in.I searched through the files and found only one video.I clicked play.“Move it,” someone said from the video. It looked like an underground room, with several men standing around. Then I saw my mother.I furrowed my brows and paused the video. Why was Mom in the video?I pressed play and kept watching as they dragged her by the arms while she tried to break free. Then it hit me.This was connected to the day she died. She was wearing the same clothes she had on when they found her body. They threw her onto the floor, and my breath caught in my thr
LORENZO GRAYSON \ VADIM KERZHAKOV©The moment I realized what had happened at the college last night, my thoughts went straight to my father.Antonio must never find out about this. The college was large and prestigious. If the video leaked, it would spread fast. Thinking about the footage of Nick and I made me wonder if Antonio already knew.Nick had to stay safe.I promised I would protect him, and I had no intention of breaking that promise.Kyle found out about the situation before reaching out to me. Then Professor Douglas, Alina, called me when the video started spreading around the college.I found someone who hacked the college account and got the video taken down, though it took some time.I handled the college board the same way I did when I first came here to work as a professor.Somehow, my thoughts drifted back to Nick once more, and I let out a quiet sigh.If Father had already found out about him, I had to move fast. There was still so much to do, especially finding the
LORENZO GRAYSON\ KERZHAKOV©My eyes couldn't stop lingering on him from the VIP section above, my eyes kept drifting back to the same spot behind the counter. No matter how many times I tried looking away, I still found him. Nick Walker. That kid had a way of being everywhere. He's neither too
