LOGINChaise
I had just returned from a long day at work with a terrible migraine. My head felt like it was going to split in two and my shoulders were stiff from all the surgeries I carried out today.
I tossed my jacket casually, flopping on the couch to catch my breath for a second. With my eyes shut, I stretched my hand out of habit, expecting a glass of freshly squeezed juice, like every other night.
My lips pressed tightly when nothing came. My eyes fluttered open, darting to my empty hand. Then it drifted to my jacket still lying on the floor.
Usually, Lily would be waiting downstairs for me to take my jacket the minute I stepped in. I always tossed it at her because I didn’t want her using it as an excuse to get close. After putting away my jacket, she would give me a glass of cold freshly squeezed juice. They always helped with my migraines and sometimes I wondered if she secretly put painkillers in them, but again, I didn’t want her to get too comfortable in a life she stole from someone else.
But tonight was different. For some reason, the house felt different. Like something was amiss.
I stood up, irritation seeping through me. What was she up to this time? Did something take away her attention that she didn’t notice I was back. I glanced towards the stairs, contemplating going up to check for her when noises from the kitchen caught my attention.
I sighed, running my hands through my hair. “Of course she’s in the kitchen. All she does is cook anyway.”
Did she really think making dinner would just fix everything after she hurt Rachelle that badly? To think I even had to force her to apologize. I had to take Rachelle away because she was genuinely frightened and comforted her for sometime.
My phone rang, distracting my train of thoughts. It was Rachelle.
A small smile tugged on my lips and I started towards the stairs. As soon as I swiped the answer button, her exhausted voice came on.
“Heyyyy, did you get home safe?” Her voice was laced with concern that made me smile.
“Yes, I got in safe. I had to go home the minute I closed from the hospital.” I told her.
“Yeah, of course you have too. I hope Lily wasn’t mad I kept you away from her all this time,” her voice dropped, laden with guilt. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to depend on you so much…”
“You don’t have to apologize for anything, Rachel. She was the one who put you in that state, remember? You didn’t even get a proper apology so why are you worrying about her?”
I pushed open the bedroom door, only to be greeted by an odd clean scent. Everything was organised as usual but it was missing the usual soothing lavender scent that welcomed me everytime. Since Lily discovered I liked the scent, she always made sure the room smelled nice every time I walked in.
It was rather strange that she forgot today.
Either way, I didn’t think much of it and simply took off my shirt
“Will you come over tonight? I think my leg is hurting again,” Rachelle said. I froze in my movements.
“You’re feeling pain? Didn’t the doctor say you could move around comfortably?” I questioned. “And I just got in. Wouldn’t it be strange if I just left?”
“No, no, it’s fine. I understand you’re married now and need to spend more time with your family. Even though your wife did this to me out of pure jealousy, I wouldn’t want her to start doubting you so it’s fine.”
My jaw locked. I did not like the sound of that at all.
“Rachelle…”
“I'm going to hang up now. Take care, Chaise.” The line went dead before I could say another word. A small groan rumbled in my chest. I'll just shower first then go see her.
I took off my clothes and headed to the bathroom. On entering, I realized the jacuzzi was empty.
“Seriously?” I gritted under my teeth. “She even forgot to prepare a hot bath for me?”
Is she trying to force me to talk to her? Because this was very cheap and desperate. Huffing, I moved into the cubicle instead and turned on the shower. The hot water soothed through my tense shoulders but it didn’t have the same effect as when I soaked in the tub. I ended up spending about five minutes before stepping out in a bathrobe.
I was about to head to the closet when a knock came on the door. Why was she knocking this time? Was she that desperate to get a response from me? I rolled my eyes and turned towards the closet, only for the door to open. I was going to ignore it completely but then the voice of a middle-aged woman made me stop dead in my tracks.
“Pardon my intrusion, sir. I just came to fix your jacket. You left it downstairs along with your bag. I spun sharply towards her, surprise lighting my features.
“Joan?” I blinked. “How come you are here?”
She was my former housekeeper who usually came in thrice a week before Lily took over after insisting she could manage the home and we didn’t need to pay for extra help unless necessary.
“Actually., Mr Ralph called me yesterday, asking me to resume work. I've already prepared some of your favourite dishes for dinner,” the petite dark-haired woman beamed. “I already set the table if you would.”
My mind blanked for a second, struggling to process the information she sprung on me.
“You were the one in the kitchen?” I questioned as she headed for my closet.
“Yes, sir.”
“Why?” I blurted. “Where is Lily? shouldn’t she be the one making dinner?” I demanded. Was this some kind of joke? She knew very well I couldn’t just eat anything someone came up with. She knew all my diet plans and allergies like the palm of her hand.
Granted, Mrs Joan has been cooking for me even before she came into the picture but that didn't give Lily and Ralph any right to just hire her back without my consent.
“No one has seen her since morning. I think she went out,” she responded and I glanced at my watch. It was almost 8:30 pm. Where could she have possibly gone? She didn’t have any friends in the area.
I took out my phone. I should probably call her. What married woman stays out till this time?
“Please where do I put this, sir?” She asked and I causally pointed at my desk.
“Hang it over the chair or something,” I shrugged, dialing Lily's number. The call didn’t connect, even up to the third time. I was not enjoying this at all.
Was she trying to get on my nerves?
“Sir, there seems to be a document on the desk for you,” Mrs Joan informed before excusing herself. A document? What document?
I moved everything work-related to my office in the hospital. If something came up, Ralph would have brought it to the office.
Dragging my feet over to the desk, I continued trying to reach her. The file immediately caught my attention. It was the same papers Lily was trying to give me sometime ago. She was so desperate back then but I was too angry to listen to her at that moment.
I dropped the phone, reaching for the papers.
What is it even about?
Lily“What does that mean?” Grandma was the first to react. I stood beside her, too bewildered to speak. Everyone knew it was my herbal recipe that improved Grandma's health when modern medicine was failing. How did it suddenly become Rachelle?“I told you to let it be, Chaise. There's no need to bring it up. I’m very fine with Lily taking all the credit,” Rachelle pretended to whisper, while making sure every single person in the room could hear it. “No!” Chaise said stubbornly, shooting me a disappointed look. “It's not right everyone paints you as the villain when all you've done is help my family in the best way you can.”I was too stunned to speak. What are they even talking about?Chaise moved straight to his explanation. “Grandma, you’re right to believe that Lily treated you. I believed that too, until Rachelle showed me proof that Lily merely stole her work.”I stole her work?Grandma simply stared at him. “Let me guess, that’s another lie she told you?”“It is not a lie, g
LilyChaise looked like he’d been slapped across the face. He moved Rachelle out of the way and stepped towards me with a look I couldn't quite decipher. My stomach curled tightly but I willed myself not to move.“What did you just say?” His voice was low and murderous. I stared back at him with the same fire, irritated that he was acting like this was all new to him. Didn't he send me the divorce papers himself? Or was he expecting me to refuse signing it and beg?“You heard me, Chaise. Rachelle is pure and harmless. She's better than me in every way and the only woman worthy of you. I've kept you away from each other for so long, so I've decided to let true love have its course,” I shrugged. He grabbed my arm, anger flashing in those beautiful blue eyes, “Do you even know what you’re saying? It’s been three years, Lily. Three whole years and now you want to throw that all away?”My heart ached from hearing him say those words. Hearing him say something like this, you’d think he cher
LilyMy ears perked up on hearing that and I slowly moved my head from the glass to look at him. His eyes locked with mine. Did he really apologise to me? Or was I so desperate for an apology that I started imagining things?“What?” My question was overshadowed by the horn beside us. Chaise sighed.“Let’s talk when we get home,” he told me. I nodded and turned back to the window. My chest felt heavy. There was nothing more to talk about, except him signing the papers. The further I get away from him, the better things would be. Five minutes later, we arrived at the mansion that used to be my home. It felt different now. Like one of those random buildings you see everyday. I never thought one day I would feel so detached from this place. I was lost in thoughts for a second and didn’t notice that Chaise hadn't walked in. He was just standing by the side of the car, watching me. “If you miss it so much why run off?” He finally said, drawing my attention. He took my hand before I cou
Lily“What papers?” He asked and I shot him a glare. “The di…”“Sir, ma’am, if you may,” a man in a security uniform suddenly interrupted. Our faces turned to him and he gave a polite bow. “You’re in front of the cafe. Our customers might think you’re causing trouble.”“Sorry about that,” Chaise apologized sincerely. “My wife is having a moodswing. We'll be on our way.”I offered the man a sugary smile even though I badly wanted to punch this asshole in the face. He pulled me along with him.“Hey! Where are you taking me? What about grandma?” I questioned as we reached the Mercedes. The guards will bring her back!” he answered, shoving me inside the car. “The doors locked immediately and I cursed him aloud. Why was he doing this to me? He never wanted me in his space and now I was doing just that, he was forcing me?He opened the door and got in the driver’s seat. “Hey! Let me out! I have an important meeting with someone!” I hit him repeatedly in the arm but he paid no attention t
LilyI turned around to see the one person I never thought I would see so soon. Chaise’s grandmother was standing there in her usual simple yet elegant style. I stood up quickly, hurrying to her with a bright smile.“Grandma!” I threw my hands around her without caring that we were in public. I noticed that she’d put on some weight and her grip was a lot stronger now. My eyes watered. The last time she held me, her hands were barely able to make contact because they were trembling badly. “I’m so happy to see you,” I pulled away with a smile. “My table is over there, come sit with me, please?”She nodded, but there was this sadness in her soft blue eyes. I helped her to my table and pulled a seat for her. I glanced around, hoping to catch sight of her bodyguards. I didn’t want to believe she came alone in her condition, even if she didn’t like the men following her around. “What are you doing here, grandma? When did you get back?” I asked. “Two days ago,” she responded with a smile
Lily“Pregnant?” I let out a chuckle, despite the dread curling in the depths of my stomach. “You think I'd get married to a man as spineless as Chaise? Only you would do that kind of thing.”It was a lie. This baby was one I prayed for. I thought if I just gave him a child, he would finally see me but I was just being naive.“Oh so now he’s spinless? Does it hurt that he’s standing up for me?” She smirked. “He hasn’t seen you home in days and he doesn’t even care. Isn't it time you give up?”“I have already given up on him,” I smiled bitterly. “You can go ahead and keep him as much as you like.” Using Ri’s hand for support, I managed to stand on my feet. Rachelle stared closely at me. I almost panicked for a second, thinking she could see through my act. Another wave of dizziness hit me but I tightened my grip on Ri’s hand, refusing to sway. “You're a very terrible liar, Lily. You spent years trying to get Chaise to notice you and even more, trying to win his love. You really expec
