I couldn't sleep the night of my wedding because I was so happy, my stomach bubbling with excitement and my head buzzing with thoughts.
Luke and I were stationed in separate rooms as required but I found myself tip-toeing to his room at midnight. We were currently at the wedding hall in which our marriage would be happening later today so as to avoid any traffic.
My face fell as I approached his room, I could make out faint noises that didn’t sound right, I opened the door a fraction and I couldn’t believe what I saw. Luke was on his back and my own sister was on top of him, and they were having nasty, disgusting sex.
Their faces were red and sweat glistened against them even in the dark, he kept whispering nasty words at her and could barely control how high his voice went.
They were so busy with what they were doing that they didn’t hear my sharp intake of breath or the sounds of my heart ripping in two.
"I thought you said you loved me, why are you going ahead with the wedding?" Scarlett asked.
"Of course, I do," Luke said. I want to play this game with your sister and shatter her heart. She's nothing and worthless to me.
Running back to my room, I almost tripped due to my vision blurred with tears. I slumped on my bed and cried my heart out. How could they do this to me on the day of our wedding?
Luke and I had known each other for years, we were friends before we began dating after high school, he was everything a girl could dream of, he was tall and handsome and he was the sweetest guy I had ever known.
He never cheated on me once throughout the years we dated neither did he ever take me for granted.
Our parents approved of our relationship so we knew one day, we’d get married. The very thought of becoming his wife someday always put butterflies in my stomach, no one could say a word against him, not even my family or friends.
One summer, we escaped to an island in Hawaii for a secret vacation. We lied to my parents that we were going with other friends but we went alone. Luke and I had been dating for some time now and since both our families approved of us, he was perfect in every way possible.
We went sightseeing, exploring the beautiful natural landscape of the place and the locals made me a necklace made of flowers. Luke said the pink flowers suited my skin.
We went swimming in the ocean and even had sex on the beach beneath the stars after dark. I was nervous and scared someone would see us but he assured me that we were alone on the beach and that he had paid off the locals to have the beach to ourselves for the night.
It was one of the craziest things I’d ever done. I couldn’t wait to get back and tell my friends about everything that had happened on the secret vacation but that wasn’t all…
On a night, he planned a dinner for us and he proposed. It was so sweet, I was the happiest girl ever.
The diamond on the ring was blindingly gorgeous, when we got back my parents were so happy for me, my sister, Scarlett seemed to be happy too. My parents called his and they began to make arrangements for our wedding.
They even confessed that they had been hoping he would propose soon and that they thought it was best for us to hold the wedding as soon as possible.
Having believed in fairytales all my life, it seemed as though my own life was now a fairytale, everything seemed to be going my way, I could even hit my chest and say my life was perfect.
He took me on several outings before the wedding and an engagement party was even thrown for us. He announced it to all his friends and invited them as well.
If only I knew what was going on behind my back.
I remembered all the sweet gifts and things Luke said to me, how he had treated me like I was the only girl he could ever love. Were they all lies? Anger replaced the sadness I was feeling.
I wiped my tears aggressively and took my phone from the dresser. I marched up to his room and found them still going at it in a different position this time.
I hit record as I fought back tears, recording them through the slightly open door.
I could only record a few minutes before everything became too much for me to bear, I stumbled backwards and accidentally hit an artificial plant that toppled over with a loud bang.
Luke and Scarlett immediately stopped what they were doing and Luke tried to run after me but I got away and hid behind a wall.
My heart pounded erratically against my rib cage as he stayed moments longer before returning back to his room where Scarlett was.
I put it off, edited the part where I ran and found my way to the projector where our slideshow- memories of us together- was supposed to be shown at our wedding ceremony later today and exchanged the file with their sex tape.
The slide show had been his idea but I had put the pictures of us together to form it up. It was ironic how I was the one ruining it by exchanging the file now.
I went to bed, heart broken and devastated, I considered going to tell my parents and putting an end to the wedding before dawn but I knew that if I did that, then Luke wouldn’t get the public disgrace which he so badly deserved.
As I struggled to sleep, I held on to the hope of exposing and embarrassing them in front of everyone later that day.
But what happened next was not what I expected at all.
What could that be?
LilyThe screen trembled slightly in Ralph's hand, but the woman's face remained perfectly still, poised, radiant even under the harsh glare of camera flashes. My mother…a woman I'd only ever known through faded childhood photographs and a phone call eighteen years too late. She was estranged to me, just like how other people were with no meaningful existence to me which wasn’t even surprising."Turn up the volume," I said, my voice barely audible over the pounding of my own heart.Ralph fumbled with the screen, and her voice filled the hospital room, smooth and practiced, the voice of someone who'd spent decades perfecting the art of public performance."...and it's with a heavy heart that I come forward today," she was saying, hands folded neatly in front of her, dressed in an elegant cream suit that made her look every bit the grieving matriarch rather than the woman who'd orchestrated my kidnapping mere hours earlier. "For eighteen years, I believed my daughter had died alongside
Chaise"Submitted where?" My voice came out low and dangerous with every muscle in my body coiled tight enough to snap."The medical ethics board," Dr. Reed said, utterly composed despite Norman and Tyron flanking me on either side, both radiating barely restrained violence. "Standard protocol whenever paternity discrepancies arise in cases involving prominent families. I had no choice but to file it the moment the preliminary results came through.""You had every choice," Lily said sharply from the bed, her arms tightening protectively around our daughter. "You chose to falsify a blood test and you chose to work for a woman who abandoned her own children for money."Something flickered across Reed's face, guilt showing visibly with whatever leverage my mother-in-law held over him. "You don't understand the position I'm in.""Then explain it," I said, stepping closer, forcing him to either hold his ground or retreat. He held it, though his composure had begun weakening at the edges
LilyDr. Reed stood at the foot of my hospital bed, his expression carrying none of the warmth I'd grown accustomed to over the past few months. My daughter stirred faintly in my arms, and something instinctive made me pull her closer, some primal awareness that the ground beneath me had shifted without my noticing. I didn’t know what this meant but I'd be damned as hell if I didn't protect her with everything I had."What kind of urgent matter?" I asked, phone still pressed to my ear, Chaise's silence on the other end stretching taut and uneasy."Lily," Chaise said quickly, his voice sharpening with something close to panic, "don't let him near the baby. Do you understand me? Keep her close, and stall until I get there."The way he talked, I could tell that whatever it was that had gotten him worked up to this extent had to be really serious. He wasn’t one to give false alarms, just like that but I had come to learn that with so many things that had happened, it was best he was alarm
Chaise"This means it's time to accelerate our other plans," the voice continued, smooth and unbothered, utterly unaware that six pairs of eyes were fixed on the phone trembling in Joan's grip. "I need the documents sent to Reed's office by morning. He knows what to do with them once they're in hand."Joan's mouth opened, closed, opened again, panic flooding her features as she struggled to formulate a response that wouldn't betray the fact that her kitchen was currently full of the very people this woman intended to destroy. It was ironic when you thought about it but here we are, in the very thing we hoped to avoid. I hated to think that this was how everything was going to be, this and the fact that no matter how much I tried to think about where we had it wrong, I came back to square one with nothing to show for it."I..." Joan started, voice wavering dangerously.Tyron gestured sharply, mouthing stall her, and Joan swallowed hard, forcing something resembling composure into her
