Chapter 4

Author: Match 3
I was rushed to the airport. At the terminal, we ran into Terrence and Yvonne, who were just about to leave.

My colleague, Susan Quinton, charged forward and grabbed Terrence by the arm. "Hurry! Let Quinn go first. She's in a critical condition. If she doesn't return to Eulasia soon, she'll die!"

Terrence immediately refused.

"That's not possible," he declared firmly. The helicopter can only take two passengers. I need to take Yvonne back now. It's too dangerous here."

"Quinn is dying!" Susan shouted in anger. "She's your wife—doesn't her life matter more than getting Yvonne out of here?"

Upon hearing this, Yvonne immediately tried to look weak and helpless.

"I'll be okay, Terrence. I think Quinn might just be jealous or upset. You should go with her. I'll be fine here on my own," she said timidly.

Initially, Susan's claims had made Terrence hesitant. But after hearing what Yvonne said, his resolve hardened.

"Quinn will be fine. Her condition had already stabilized earlier. Stop trying to help her trick me."

As his words fell, he took Yvonne's hand and moved toward the helicopter.

"Quinn is actually dying," Susan sobbed as she clung to his arm. "Are you really going to abandon her?"

He flung her hand away and shot me a cold glance. In a solemn and heavy voice, he said, "You need to be more mature, Quinn. I'll come back for you once I drop Yvonne off. Stop getting jealous over nothing."

Little did he know, I wasn't jealous. I was actually dying.

I lay on the stretcher and didn't say a word. The pain made it impossible for me to speak. I could feel my body slowly shutting down. On top of that, my consciousness had begun to slip away too.

Terrence removed his goggles and walked over to me. Then, he gently lifted my oxygen mask before leaning in toward my ear.

"Wait for me. I'll be back in six hours," he said softly.

His fingers grazed the decaying corner of my lips. There was a faint scar at the base of his thumb. He had gotten that from a burn he suffered while checking the temperature of my soup.

"When this is over, I'll take you to see the cherry blossoms you had always wanted to see."

I didn't want to see the cherry blossoms, and I didn't want to wait for him either.

I couldn't do anything while Terrence boarded the helicopter with Yvonne. I watched the rotating blades spin before the aircraft rose into the sky. Then, the helicopter eventually disappeared from my view.

I'd never imagined that Terrence could be so cruel. I couldn't believe that he would choose another woman over my life.

With great effort, I fished out my phone and a prenatal test report from my pockets. Handing the items to Susan, I instructed, "Hand the audio recording on my phone to headquarters. Don't let Yvonne take credit for what we did. And this…"

I paused. My breathing was growing more and more labored.

"Give this to Terrence," I continued. "Tell him I'll never forgive him."

Susan froze before she started to tear up. "Hang on, Quinn. We'll find you another aircraft. This is all our fault. I'm sorry we couldn't stop them from leaving—"

"It's too late…" I flashed them a weak smile as I felt my life slip away.

"I'd like to be cremated," I said. "Don't give Terrance my ashes. I don't want to see him ever again."

After my final words, my eyelids gradually fell shut.

My colleagues, who were standing around me, removed their hats and saluted me. The air fell silent as they wordlessly bade me farewell.

Far away, Terrence's interdimensional communication device suddenly emitted a piercing alarm.

"The female protagonist has perished. A new female protagonist will now be selected," a voice declared. "The Narrative has designated Yvonne Lynn as the new female protagonist of this world."

Terrence froze immediately. Before receiving the message, he had been eagerly trying to transfer our team's credit to Yvonne before his superiors.

"There was so much you could've done. But instead, you chose to let me suffer in her place," I said to Terrence. After a pause, I asked him, "Do you actually love me, Terrence?"He was extremely intelligent. If he had truly wanted to alter a key part of the storyline, he should've been able to handle it properly. And yet, he still chose to put me in harm's way. To make matters worse, he had never even considered whether I would survive the entire ordeal. His feelings for me had changed a long time ago. He simply refused to admit it."You're right—I am soft-hearted. However, I only act that way toward the version of you that loves me, not the one who put me in harm's way," I said firmly.I paused and met his gaze. Then, I declared, "I don't love you anymore, Terrence Sawyer."The love that I had for him had become nothing but endless pain and disappointment. I thought that I could move on. But now, I realize that I was still hurt by what had happened."I was wrong. I'm sorry…" T

Simon sighed. "Please stop him from continuing to commit such atrocities. None of us can enter the alternate world. Only one traveler can exist in a single alternate world at any given time."I nodded. I didn't want to see Terrence again, but I also didn't want him to slaughter innocent people because of me.I followed Simon to an abandoned building. The police had surrounded it, and they were currently using loudspeakers to call for surrender."You're surrounded, Terrence Lawson. Put down your weapons and surrender immediately! Surrender, and you will be shown leniency!"Simon led me past the police tape and into the building. Once we went inside, I was immediately hit by a stench of blood. The smell was so overwhelming that I almost threw up.At last, I saw Terrence. He was in a room full of blood stains. He had his back toward me, and he was standing like a lifeless statue. On the floor, Yvonne, who was on the brink of death, lay covered in blood. After being extensively t

Where did you go, Terrence? I couldn't catch up to you at all," Yvonne whined. Terrence didn't spare her a single glance. He kicked her to the ground and grabbed a fistful of her hair. Yanking her head back, he forced her to meet his gaze. "Did you give Quinn a sepsis-inducing drug?"Yvonne cried out in pain. Staring at Terrence with terror, she hastily shook her head and replied, "I didn't!"After a brief pause, she continued, "What are you talking about, Terrence? Why would I ever hurt Quinn?""How dare you lie to me?" Terrence snarled. He clamped his hand around her throat and gradually began to tighten his grip."Why did you do it? Talk!" he barked icily."I-I did it for us, Terrence," Yvonne choked out as she struggled for air. "I-If that bitch were still alive, we could never be together. I know you love me. You only restrained yourself because you're married…"Upon hearing this, disgust flashed across Terrence's face. He tightened his grip and snapped, "Bullshit! I do

Terrence didn't know how to defend himself. He had never instructed Yvonne to give me that injection.Susan pulled out a folded piece of paper from her pocket and tossed it at him. "Quinn asked me to give this to you," she said coolly.Terrence picked it up with a trembling hand and unfolded it. It was a prenatal test report. He was in disbelief. "Quinn was pregnant?"Susan let out a bitter laugh. "Yeah. You were about to become a father. But unfortunately for you, you killed your wife and your unborn child with your own hands."Suddenly, John's sigh echoed in Terrence's mind."I was going to tell you. Quinn suffered a miscarriage during the seventh round of torture," he explained. He continued, "She lost the baby because she was in too much pain. It was expelled from her body in a bloody mess. To make matters worse, the fetus was devoured by rats the minute it was removed from her body.""I just checked our communication logs. Quinn did access our communication devices. S

Terrence dropped the file he was holding before checking the notification in his mind for the third time."What? Quinn is dead?" he muttered in a shaky voice. Then, he contacted John to ask about it again.John fell silent for a moment. Staring at my lifeless face on the screen, he slowly replied, "Yes, Terrence. She's dead."Terrence's eyes widened with panic. "She's the female protagonist. She's supposed to be protected by the Narrative. How can she be dead?"John sighed. In a heavy voice, he replied, "You're too emotional, Terrence. There isn't an infinite amount of Narrative favor in this world. You've transferred most of Quinn's fates and opportunities to Yvonne. It's only natural that she's not protected by the Narrative anymore."A hint of pity flashed across his eyes. After a brief pause, he added, "You even forced her to endure hardships that she was never supposed to bear in the first place. Her Narrative favor had already been drained by Yvonne a long time ago.
