Miguel

As the tension in my chest dissolved due to the relief that rose from seeing her, another emotion arose just as suddenly. Anger. I was angry that she was just coming home at this time. Even more, she had ignored all my calls and basically went ghost.

“Penelope,” I yelled. “Why are you just coming? Have you seen the time?” I vented my frustration to her. Yelling, demanding answers. “Where have you been? You didn’t see my calls?”

I expected her to stop and address me- answer my questions

  • Saints Don't Moan   Chapter 65

PenelopeMiguel was seated in the driver's seat. Of course, Ashley was sitting in front, with him. I rolled my eyes when she didn’t even attempt to offer the front seat to any of us. She just went straight for the front passenger seat door and opened it. She entered like it was her God given right. I almost scoffed at her confidence and audacity. Part of me admired it, the other part envied it. I was sitting at the back of the car with Ariel. Rodney was wedged carefully between the both of us. Rodney may not have known it but him being there was something I was grateful for. Because the separation he created between Ariel and I makes me breathe a little better. Something about being in this vehicle with all of them made me want to suffocate, and Rodney made it a little better. I braced myself for the very long journey ahead.I could never in a million years have predicted how much flirting would go on between Ashley and Miguel. I mean, could she not go a sentence without insinuating

  • Saints Don't Moan   Chapter 64

MiguelI couldn’t help but be mesmerized by the way her tushy danced its perfect dance in her little dress as she scurried off to go and get the door. A large grin appeared on my face because I had procured her that dress which she had been so against wearing. Now, she was wearing it, looking as beautiful as ever. I followed her behind at a good pace so I could get a good glance at who was at the door. To my surprise, it was Ashley and Ariel. I remembered I had promised them both a ride yesterday, and almost struck my forehead with my palm for not remembering that on time. The women at my door were trying their hardest to mask their surprise. They must have been utterly shocked to see Penelope answering the door for me, in what would be considered a scandalous dress for a nun. They glanced at me for a moment then at Penelope. A subtle way of saying What the hell is going on between you two? “What are you doing in Miguel’s house so early, Sister Penelope?” Ashley asked Penelope, mak

  • Saints Don't Moan   Chapter 63

PenelopeIt was like a wicked hangover that had no care for your feelings. Those hangovers that loved to give you a splitting headache. Except I didn’t have a splitting headache. I had a massive brain fuzz. I couldn’t remember much of anything. I raised my hand to cover my mouth as I yawned, while I gazed at the shirt I was putting on. I remembered I had picked this shirt and taken it to the bathroom yesterday, but I had no idea how the shirt had gotten on my body. Things were coming back to be in breaks, and there were many gaps in my memory. Those gaps happened to be information I would consider important in piecing things together. Recollecting yesterday’s events in their entirety was proving too difficult. How had I gotten in bed in the first place? I pondered this question for a while before raising the curtains to give myself context on how far along the morning was- it was barely dawn. Where did that annoying man have his rest last night? I thought to myself, as usually, I wo

  • Saints Don't Moan   Chapter 62

MiguelI had excused Penelope from the room entirely. I didn’t want to risk making her uncomfortable at all, considering her volatile state. She declaring that she was leaving for New York was still a shock I was recovering from. Though, I tried to have some hope that she would rescind her sudden leave. As the times passed however, that hope started to dwindle. The heated call with Clara made me realize how much of a lost cause she was. I had thought that if we discussed and came to some sort of compromise, it would all die down, but no. Clara was just doing this to ruin me. It was more than the properties she would acquire if I accepted defeat. It was the humiliation I would face. The shame that would arise in my life. The inability to resume my normal life because admitting defeat would mean I was admitting to all the lies she had spread about me. Trying to reason with her was like trying to reason with a brick wall. As I remembered how she made me yell, I kicked the floor in anno

  • Saints Don't Moan   Chapter 61

Penelope I ran away from Miguel towards the house. The effect he had on me was undeniable. We were just yelling at each other, passionately trying to vent our frustrations though very loud cries, and that managed to turn into an even more passionate kiss. I tried to kill what my mind was telling me. The undeniable truth was that all that yelling we did was us venting the frustration of not being together. That both of us knew our arrangement was taboo yet the moment we were close enough, our true desires took over. How could I resist? His scent lured me to his body. Each time I yelled, I was pushed closer to him. Compelled to reduce the distance between us. And before I knew it, I was doing what I wished I was doing throughout this entire trip. My mind was constantly fighting with my body. I knew this was bad, but I couldn’t resist. I needed to quench my thirst for Miguel, and at the same time I needed to figure out how to not be thirsty for him in the first place. Even as I ran

I needed answers. I needed to know what was going on. “Where the hell have you been, Penelope?” I yelled in her face. “It is none of your business. Don’t you have a hospital to run? Worry about that and leave me alone.” Penelope responded back. Her words we

•Penelope • The bell rang three times for afternoon prayer, and I was halfway through shelving the hymns when I headed the footsteps that didn’t seem to belong to any of the children. I stayed facing the shelves. Maybe if I just kept working, whoever it was would go away. But Mother Super

•Miguel • The lounge was wrapped in low lights, and smoked coiled lazy spirals above the tables from cigars. I leaned back into the velvet-lined booth, cradling a glass Lagavulin between my fingers, Damien was holding court to my left, a brunette tucked against his side, her fake laugh

•Penelope• I ignored the tingling between my thighs all evening. It didn’t help that during mass, Father Marshall, bless his soul—suddenly looked like Dr. Miguel Ramirez from the side. Same silver hair, same calm, unreadable expression. I blinked hard, looked back down at my prayer book, and

The boys at Saint Jude’s Orphanage had a creative streak, which was a polite way of saying they spent most mornings testing how close they could get to trouble before
