Reagan
I wake up late on my birthday only to see Meadow in my face staring at me.
“What are you doing, creeper?”
“Happy Birthday!” she yells and then does some magic that glitter bombs my entire room.
“Aren’t you supposed to do something that I like on my birthday?” I grumble. I am so NOT a glitter girl and no matter how much magic she uses to get rid of it, I still find glitter all over the damn place. The last time she did this, I found glitter on my ass cheeks. No, scratch that, one of the warriors who saw me shift saw glitter on my ass shining in the sunlight and I’ve never lived it down.
I’m pretty sure I’ve punched every male warrior in our pack for calling me Glitter Buns and every damn one of them said it was worth it. Bastards.
“Look, grumpy, just because your mate wasn’t here last night, doesn’t mean he won’t arrive today,” Meadow says much too cheerfully.
Every one of the Alphas and royals that had been here last night had wanted me to continue the party until it was midnight. Then everyone had counted down, like it was friggin New Year’s Eve and ... nothing. He wasn’t here. Everyone went to bed disappointed. Except me. None of them struck me as mate material. There was a lot of arrogance and pride, which I’m used to from living with Alphas and Guardians, but it just seemed ... conceited. Since I’m a Guardian, my mate will naturally become stronger because of our mate bond. And I have no intention of binding myself to someone who is conceited before they’re even mated to me. Thankfully, the Moon Goddess and I seem to be in agreement on this.
"Maybe they could all leave and I could celebrate my birthday with just the new ones,” I say, just as there is a knock at the door.
“Sweetheart, you have to get up. You’re the guest of honor and they have a breakfast planned for you. Your father wanted to get you up to spar, but I talked him out of that. You can’t miss breakfast though,” my mother says, walking in.
She looks around my room at the explosion of glitter. “Is this your work, Meadow.”
“Well you don’t think it’s mine, do you, Mom?” I ask with grumpy exasperation.
Rather than take it personally, my mother comes over and wraps her arms around me. “Happy birthday, sweetheart. Your father and I got you something, but I want to wait until he’s back to give it to you.”
“That’s fine. I need to shower anyway.”
I start to head to the shower, but my mother holds my hand, keeping me here. “Reagan, you’ll find him. If it’s not today, that’s okay. It will happen.”
I nod and hug her. “Thanks, Mom.”
I shower and put on casual clothes. I’m not trying to impress anyone and it’s my birthday. I’ll dress up tonight for the big event, but not for breakfast.
When I come out, my parents and Meadow are waiting for me. Meadow looks really excited so I know whatever my parents got me is going to be good.
My father looks at me and I wait him out. Then he tosses me something. I catch it and look.
“You got me a car?” I ask, excited.
“It’s not just a car, Rea! You have to see it!” Meadow says practically dancing on her toes.
I smile and rush outside, Meadow right behind me.
“Holy cow! You got me the Arctic Truck?” I ask, in awe as I look at the mega off-road vehicle. With this truck, I’ll be able to go anywhere to let Alayla out to run. I can feel her excitement knowing we’ll be able to get to places that we’ve only been able to run to before in the mountains.
“Thank you!” I say, throwing my arms around my father, and then hugging my mother again. “Can I take it for a spin?”
“After breakfast, please Reagan,” my mother says.
I sigh. I know Emlyn, my brother’s mate and the pack’s Luna, will have done something special for me for breakfast.
“Alright. But I’m telling Emlyn that I gave up my first ride for her,” I say as we turn and head to the packhouse.
“A couple more people came in overnight, Reagan. Still don’t smell anything?” my father asks.
“Not yet,” I say. I’ll admit, I’m a bit disappointed. Anyone who is anyone is coming to my birthday. If my mate isn’t here then ... “Maybe I’ll have to wait, like you did for Mom,” I say to my father.
“I doubt that. You’re too special to go that long without your mate,” he says, just as we walk into the packhouse. Sure enough, Emlyn went all out. I’m not even sure when she and the pack had time to take down the decorations from last night and put up the birthday decorations for this morning.
“HAPPY BIRTHDAY!” everyone who sees me yells.
The pack comes up and begins hugging me and wishing me Happy Birthday, as the Alphas and royals make their way toward me. I’ve barely stepped into the packhouse trying to say hello to everyone. Everyone has a gift for me, but my mother expertly guides the gifts to a table that Emlyn set aside.
“Alpha Reagan! Happy Birthday!” Rich’s warriors say. “We’ve got your breakfast right here,” they say, carrying a plate over to me. I look around and see that my brothers and sisters are looking away from me, smirking. Emlyn is holding their youngest daughter, Harper, and smiling at me in a way that has me narrowing my eyes at their warriors.
“Alpha Reagan, we made you breakfast,” they say, their smirks already telling me that I’m about to be aggravated.
When I look at the tray, there are two honeybun donuts that are absolutely smothered in glitter. Over top and underneath them, it has glue or icing covered in glitter. It says ‘Glitter Buns’.
“You fucking assholes,” I growl.
I hear the guests suck in air, but the warriors just laugh, knowing that while I’m annoyed with their antics, I’m not angry about it. It’s actually a pretty cute way for them to acknowledge how much I mean to them.
“At least tell me they’re edible,” I growl.
“Of course they are. Do you really think our omegas would have allowed them to make you something like that if you couldn’t eat it?” Emlyn says, walking over. “Happy birthday, Rae.”
I kiss the top of two-month-old Harper’s head then hug my sister-in-law before snatching a glitter infused honeybun off the plate.
“It’s not bad enough that Meadow glitter-bombed my bedroom this morning, now I’ve got glitter infused donuts for breakfast,” I say, taking a bite. “But compliments to the chef. These are delicious,” I say, knowing the omegas made these for me.
“That explains the sparkles in your hair,” my sister Malin says, walking over to hug me. Her twin, Quinn, is right behind her. I go around, hugging my family, their mates, and the other Guardians before finally being able to sit and eat.
When I finally sit, the omegas bring me a plate of steak and eggs. “Now THIS is the birthday present I’ve been waiting for,” I say, smiling at them.
Rich comes to sit with me, carrying Briella on one hip and Knox on the other. Little Leander comes to sit beside me. Emlyn hands me a booster seat for him and I put him in the chair beside me.
“This is important day, Aunt Rae.”
I lean forward so my face is even with Leander’s. “Why is that Little Leander?” He’s only three but he’s becoming more of an Alpha every day. He looks and acts so much like my brother, Rich, that it’s uncanny.
“Your birthday! You find your mate!” he tells me excitedly.
“Well, I haven’t found him yet,” I tell him.
He frowns, thinking that through. “Then you should fight with the others. Show them what they missed out on,” he says.
“What a fantastic idea, Little Leander,” I say, holding up my hand in a high five. He slaps my hand and then goes back to eating as if he’s settled today’s dilemma. Emlyn shakes her head but Rich looks excited.
“Sparring day?” he asks.
“Best way to spend the day,” I tell him, just as excited.
“What about presents?” Quinn asks, looking upset that I’m choosing to spend my birthday on the sparring grounds.
“We have plenty of time for presents,” my mother says patiently.
“Yeah, and I want to see how my little sister holds up against me now that I’m mated to vampire royalty,” Leana says.
“I’m more interested in seeing how I hold up against your mate,” I say, looking at Drake who is sitting beside her. Besides the very pale skin, the obvious way to tell that he’s a vampire is that there is no food in front of him. The rest of us look like we have plates big enough for three people each.
“He’s not the only royal vampire here, Custos Regni,” a vampire says from across the room.
“Or the only royal. There are many here who would love to see your strength in action, Guardian. Or any of the Guardians for that matter,” one of the royal elves says.
My father claps his hands together, the rubs them back and forth excitedly. “Sparring day!” he says, looking at Rich.
“Alright, I’ll set it up.”
ReaganA day of sparring is my favorite way to spend my birthday. I’m not the party girl that my twin sisters are and I’m not the prim and proper Council member that my sister, Leana, is. At heart, I’m a fighter, just like my father. And since everyone here knew that I wasn’t their mate, they let loose and really fought me.I took every one of them down. Now, I’m in my bedroom, getting ready for my party. The pack sprites are here doing my hair in the beautifully intricate way that they have. My mother, my sisters, my brothers’ mates, Meadow, Lily, Riley, Aunt Grace and Aunt Cara are all here. The house is full of women and babies since each of my sisters and brothers have young children. I’ve grown up with a lot of family members in a loud, bustling packhouse, so the noise doesn’t bother me at all. If anything, it makes me feel more normal than I have in the last two days dealing with all of the male suitors who are here hoping to be my mate.“There are still some people arriving, Re
KieranI’m furious at my wolf, but more furious at myself. I should have been stronger, should have been able to keep him contained.“Please don’t kill him,” Elias says again.“Elias, if you don’t fucking move out from in front of me, I’m demoting you.”“It would be worth it if you lived, Alpha,” he says.I drag myself to my feet. I shouldn’t be able to stand after the power that ripped me off my mate. But her power, all that fucking power that flowed into me for the few moments that Samson’s canines were in her neck, has strengthened me. And while I’m still at risk of going feral if we don’t complete our bond, Samson is much more manageable right now.“Your Gamma is very protective of you,” the older man, obviously my mate’s father, says.“My name is Alpha Kieran. I come from a pack out west. We literally just arrived and when my wolf smelled his mate, he took over. If I were in my right mind, I never would have marked her without her consent. But unfortunately, what my Gamma said is
ReaganAfter washing off the blood and looking at the horrible looking mate mark that looks like a vampire tried to rip my throat out, I put on comfortable clothes that Quinn got for me.“I want to talk to the man who was standing in front of ...” It doesn’t feel right to say it, but it’s true. “My mate. Do you know who he is?”I watch my mother’s eyes go unfocused. “Your father says he’s Alpha Kieran’s Gamma.”Alpha Kieran. I didn’t even know the name of the man who marked me.“I’m assuming he’s from out west? Is that why he arrived so late?”“Your brother asked the patrols when they arrived. They said they’d just arrived, indicating that they had been driving for two days,” my mother says.“What can we do, Reagan?” Malin asks me.“Whatever you need, we’re here for you,” Quinn adds.“I’m not really sure what I need. Maybe a drink. But first, I want to talk to the Gamma.”I look at myself in the mirror, pulling the shirt up so my hideous mate mark doesn’t show. Then I pull my hair over
KieranWow. Just wow. I haven’t been able to keep Samson in line for a long time, but this little slip of a woman, our mate, not only called him forward, but then she smacked my nose. Thankfully, Samson was forward and took the brunt of her slap as she intended. At least, I hope that’s what she intended. The shock resonating through me from Samson makes me want to laugh out loud. I might, if I wasn’t still so angry with him for what he did. He deserves everything she does to him and more.‘I was going feral,’ he says.‘Not an excuse. You’re a fucking Alpha wolf.’‘All the more reason that I was struggling,’ he growls.“Did you just growl at me?” my mate’s wolf snarls. The power emanating off of her is incredible. I felt it when Samson sank his canines into her neck but still. This level of power is unheard of.‘Not unheard of, just rare. I told you, she’s a Guardian,’ Samson says.‘What does that even mean?’ I ask him.‘I think you’re about to find out,’ he says as our mate stands up a
ReaganI’m not sure how I feel about my mate’s eager acceptance of my offer, but I’ve made it and I’ll stick to it. I have a lot to do before tomorrow. When I step out of the office, I’m not surprised to see Rich and my father standing there.“Give him a room. If you don’t trust him, put him with Gamma Elias,’ I say as I walk past them.“Reagan,” Rich says. He’s still my Alpha so I stop and look at him. “What are you going to do?”“What needs to be done,” I say, and keep walking. I already know that neither man is going to be happy with my decision, but it’s MY decision to make.I’m not surprised when my father catches up quickly and falls into step beside me.“And what exactly needs to be done, Reagan?” he asks me.“I need to decide if he’s worthy of me accepting him as a mate.”“Agreed. How do you propose to do that?”“I’m going back to his pack,” I say.My father grabs my arm and spins me toward him. “The fuck you are!”“Yes, Dad, I am. I am a grown woman, a Guardian. You know I’m p
KieranI was put in a room with Elias. We were given food, two beds, and two guards at the door. I told Elias to get some sleep. The man looks like he hasn’t slept in months and he probably hasn’t. I, however, can't sleep.Unlike before when I couldn’t sleep because Samson was being loud and obsessive in my head, now I’m trying to figure out how to make sure that my mate decides to accept me. Samson isn’t prowling around in my head like before, but he isn’t exactly settled either.I wanted to walk off the stress of the day, but when I opened the door, the guards had politely but firmly told me to return to my room. Since I’m sure Samson would try to find Reagan again, I do as they say and continue to pace.“Are you okay, Alpha?” Elias says, sitting up in his bed and rubbing his eyes.“How bad is the pack, Elias?” I ask him.The silence in the room speaks volumes.“That bad, huh? Is it all because of me?”“No. But the lack of leadership has been ... a problem. One that I hope will be re
ReaganI put the address into the GPS and begin driving, watching my family in the rearview mirror as they stand and watch me leave. I drag my focus back to the road when I can no longer see them. I’m not afraid. I know I can handle anything that Kieran, Samson, or the pack throw at me, but that doesn’t change the hollow feeling of loneliness that I get as I get on the interstate and begin heading west. I'm leaving everything that I know and everyone that I love behind. Well, except for Meadow.Kieran pulls out his phone which is connected to the Bluetooth in the car and dials a number that begins ringing through the vehicle.“Yes, Alpha?” Elias answers.“Where did we stop two nights ago? We can stop there tonight.”“That was about twelve hours away Alpha. I drove fifteen hours the day before. Since we’re not in a huge hurry, we could break the trip into three days.”“Two is fine,” I tell him.“I’ve got a place about halfway. I’ll text it to you, Rea,” Meadow says.I get the address an
KieranBaby steps. I take baby steps so I can keep in control. I’ve been out of control for too long. Samson has been out of my control for too long.I sit, as my mate suggested and begin eating the food that Elias got for me. He even heated it up as if I’m incapable of doing that for myself. Sadly, he’s right. As I take a bite of food, forcing it down, I watch him going through my things, expertly navigating my bags and collecting what I’ll need for tonight and setting it out in easy reach for me to access without any thought at all.“Elias.”“Yes, Alpha?” he asks, not looking at me.“Elias!” I say, putting more force behind it.He stops and looks at me. “Yes, Alpha?”“Go shower. You’ve been taking care of me for far too long. I’ll be okay. My mate is in the next room. I can smell her.” I don’t mention that I can feel her emotions, although I can. Concern is what I’m getting from her.He looks at where he’s laying out my things like he’s desperate to finish what he started.“Elias, I
MeadowI knew immediately that something was wrong with Asmodeus. We’d been outside talking and everything had been fine, then his eyes had turned red and he was gone. I’d looked around and then seen him standing inside the packhouse door, panting. When I’d walked inside, I realized that Kieran had very violently killed someone and the blood was putting my mate into a blood haze. I thought letting him feed off me would have been enough, but I’d been terrified that he’d drain me, so I didn’t let him drink too much blood.I dragged him up to my room and the moment we’d walked inside he’d pressed me against the door, his nose running up and down my throat. I felt his fangs slide against my skin.“Asmodeus?” I ask, trying hard to remain calm. I know from living with Guardians that vampires respond to fear, it excites them.“I don’t want to hurt you. I haven’t fed enough lately,” I can hear him panting with the effort of controlling himself.“Can you feed on me without losing control?”“I d
I wasn’t sure what Elias was going to say and a very small part of me worried that Reagan might snap his neck if she didn’t like what he said to her, but she’d held up her hand and Samson slammed our mouth shut.‘Trust our mate. She says she trusts Elias. Trust her that she means it,’ he said.Elias’ honesty doesn’t surprise me but hearing a second person say how quickly Samson went feral makes both of us angry. We were being undermined and poisoned, and I’m already confident that I know who it was. When Reagan lays it out so clearly, I realize how foolish I was to trust Markus. The entire pack turns to look at him. Everyone knows he has the most to gain if I'd gone feral. He would have taken over the pack and no one would have questioned it.“I was protecting all of you!” he yells.“Did you do it, Markus? Did you put silver in my drink?” I ask him. Now it’s my turn to stalk him.“No,” he snarls. That is the truth.“What about Reagan’s? Did you put silver in her drink?” I ask him.“I d
ReaganI’m pleasantly surprised at how the pack responded to the news that I accepted Kieran. It means many of them not only accepted me but they are happy that he is whole again. I wouldn’t have accepted him if I hadn’t believed that he was a good man, worthy of the Guardian gifts that he’ll receive from being mated to me. But hearing the happiness from the pack reinforces that I made the right decision.“I cannot BELIEVE you didn’t tell me!” Meadow says, coming over to pull me in a hug. Since her scent has a strong cold, stinging scent to it, I pull back and look at her.“Something you want to share?” I ask her.“I’m not marked,” she says, showing me her neck.“But you shared your blood, didn’t you?” I ask her.“How did you ...” she begins, but I tap my nose.“Don’t insult me. You know I’m a Guardian,” I tell her.“Fine. I told him I wasn’t ready for him to mark me yet, but ... that he could taste my blood,” she says.“It was the most delicate, delicious, intoxicating taste that has
KieranI’ve barely been asleep for two hours, but I’m so energized, so excited, so ready to announce that Reagan is mine to the pack. She’s right about those enhanced senses. At some point last night I heard my Gamma’s grunts and roars along with the strangest trilling sound I’ve ever heard.I expect to see my Gamma with a mate mark and a smile this morning.I tease my mate awake, sliding inside her. “Time to wake up beautiful,” I tell her, pleased when I feel her body responding to me quickly.“If I pretend to sleep will you keep doing what you’re doing,” she murmurs.“Nope. I will smack that ass, and make you come faster,” I growl. I feel fucking giddy this morning. She turns and looks at me over her shoulder. “Is that supposed to deter me?”“No. It was a warning. We don’t have a lot of time.” I slap her ass, taking her mouth in a dominant kiss as I thrust hard and fast, making her come twice before I release inside her again.“I’m starting to understand why I’ve walked in on my pare
ReaganI felt my mate’s mind heal. I wonder if it was the same for my mother when she mated with my father, although she was still weak from years of being held captive by a vampire coven and my father wasn't as feral as Samson. As soon as Alayla sank her canines into his neck, accepting him as ours, his mind had healed and then behind that had been a nearly overwhelming wave of appreciation and relief, so much relief that he was healed. We stay like that for a long time, holding each other and letting our wolves push their venom into the other, scenting each other so everyone will know that we are now one. When we finally pull our canines out of each other's necks, I slide off of Kieran, laying beside him. He keeps one arm around me, brushing my hair away from face, looking at me like he’s never truly seen me before.“Why? What made you decide to accept me now?” he asks.“There were a lot of reasons. First, you’ve never once lied to me. I would know if you had. Your pack members aren’
KieranI was trying to focus on what Reagan was saying, but her hands were rubbing against my chest and the moment she pressed her lips against mine, I lost all control. I had her pressed against the wall, grinding against her in my desperation.I expected her to push me away, but she didn’t. Instead she pulled my hips against her. Her hands against my bare ass making me realize that I lost the towel somewhere.“Yes, Kieran,” she purrs. That’s all the incentive I need. I slide my hands to her thighs and lift her up. She wraps her strong legs around me and I take her to the bed. She holds on as I crawl onto the bed, settling myself over her.“Tell me right now if this isn’t what you want,” I growl, my mouth sucking eagerly down her neck to her throat.“I want this,” she breathes.“Are you sure,” I say, lifting my head and holding on to the last vestiges of my control. I watch as her canines extend.“I’m sure,” she says, before they snick back into her gums.I take her mouth again, my ha
ReaganAfter dinner, I checked on the omegas. I was worried that my violent display might have scared them. They were terrified, but not because I killed Camila. They all thought that I was going to blame Tessa.“She didn’t know, Luna. We can all vouch for her. Tessa would never do that,” Corinna says. They’ve basically created a wall in front of her.“I know that,” I tell them.“But she gave you the drink,” Elsie says.“I also know that Tessa would have been terrified to touch that glass if she’d known it contained silver. If she had splashed even a little on herself, it would have burned her, just like it would have burned any of you.”“You’re not mad, Luna?” Tessa asks, poking her head around Corinna.“At you? No. At Camila? Obviously, I was very angry. I’m angry because she tried to hurt Kieran. I’m angry because she put you and anyone else who touched that drink at risk of being injured.”“You should be careful of Olivia, Luna. She and Camila were friends,” Elsie says.“Anyone els
Markus“She killed her, Beta! She fucking killed Camila right in the middle of the dining hall! During dinner!” Olivia yells.“Keep you fucking voice down,” I snarl at her.I’d felt the tether to Camila snap. It was unfortunate, but this is war and there are always casualties in war. I was willing to make Camila my Luna when I became Alpha, but she was becoming overly confident and arrogant. I’ve heard of Guardians. I know that they are very powerful. But Camila didn’t want to listen and now she’s paid the price.“What are they going to do when they figure out that I’m the one who put the silver in their drinks!” she whisper yells at me.I look at Aaron, Nathan, and Penelope. The six of us, including Camila, had planned to take over the pack when Kieran went feral. We were going to be the new ranked members of the pack. Yeah, we helped Samson out a bit. At first it wasn’t as impactful, but as he got weaker and more out of control, the silver we were lacing his food and drinks with impa
ReaganI look down at the amulet that is glowing on my chest. I lift it up to see it better.“Well, I guess that works,” I say, smiling at my friend. I hold the amulet while I put the drink back down. The light dies away. When I pick it up again, it lights up. I lift the drink to my nose and sniff it. There’s the faintest hint of something metallic.“Reagan put it down,” Kieran, or more accurately Samson, growls.“What is it?” one of the warriors at the table asks. The entire room has gone quiet, watching because of Meadow’s outburst.I stand, holding up my glass.“Who brought this to the table?” I ask, looking around.“I ... I ... I did,” Tessa says, stuttering.“Did you pour it for me?” I ask her.“I did. I got all of your drinks. Is something wrong with it? I can get you a new one?” she says, looking terrified.I can feel the fury rolling off of Kieran. I pick up his glass and sniff it as well. Metallic.“Don’t drink that,” I say to him. “You probably shouldn’t either,” I say to Mea
