It's my eighteenth birthday today, and I'm supposed to be joined with my mate.
Cassius Emberwing. But somehow, I'm watching my mate in the arms of another woman-my best friend, Piper.
Everyone's eyes are on me. They're all looking at me like they can't see me."Where's your scent, Aria? We can't sense your wolf."
"A shifter without a scent..."
My heart shatters, and I recall the events that led up to this day. Days before my 18th birthday.
"Rogue!"
Someone's startled voice pulls my attention towards the clanking sounds I can hear coming from the gates.
Guards quickly assemble themselves, like they are preparing for war.
The fear of a rogue in the realm can bring anyone's attention to a stand still.
It's common knowledge in the Shifters realm that all rogues are deemed unworthy of anything more than to simply await their death in the Rogue's camp.
They are stripped of all bearings, and forced into the forest to live away the rest of their days in abject loneliness.
I like to think of it as solitude, away from everything and everyone, but I doubt they see it that way.
A life away from everything you love? Could I live with that?
Some things will always remain a mystery to some people, I presume.
As the youngest omega to the Flynn pack, I am further away from relating to any rogue than physically possible, so how would I know what they can live with?
A guard appears beside me, standing as still as a rod.
"Your grandmother requests that I escort you inside until the rogue has been dealt with, Omega."
I don't recognize the guard, but that's no surprise as we have more guards than I can possibly remember.
My ears prickle with the sound of marching guards. All ready to attack the intruder, the rogue who dared come into our realm.
"Thank you, can I take Remi with me? She's having a bit of withdrawal symptoms, seeing as I may be leaving her soon." I joke lightly.
The little wolf in my arms makes a small sound, like he can understand what I'm saying, even though I doubt he can.
It's white hair, a stark contrast against the green grass it's rolling it's mouth in.
The guard nods and begins to escort me away.
I pick up Remi, cuddle him to myself, and walk alongside him.In a few days, I will no longer be Aria Flynn, but Aria Emberwing.
An honor in all it's sense, for any omega, especially an omega from the Flynn pack.
My appointed mate, Cassius Emberwing, the Alpha of the Shifters realm is someone I have known since I was a little girl.
And although, we've more or less never attempted being anything more than friends, I doubt it will be too hard to be his mate.
Cassius is kind, and strong, and capable.
At least that's what my grandmother likes to say about him.I think he's smart too, and sometimes when I look at him, I get the feeling he knows so much, but tries to say too little.
But all of these don't matter, because in a few days time, I will be turning 18-the prime age for an omega to be joined with her mate.
And the age I become the Luna of the Shifters realm.
I follow the guard silently, too silently for a person being ushered to safety, and it takes me a surprising amount of time to realize that I am not being led to my room.
By the time we make the second wrong turn, the guard beside me suddenly appears to stand straighter.
His gait sharper, and more purposeful.
I stop abruptly, "Where is my grandmother?"
Even though I try to make my voice appear even, my breath hitches just a tiny bit, and with his wolf hearing, I know he can hear me.In the dim lightning, his eyes suddenly glow a funny ember shade.
"My apologies for having to do this omega, I am simply following instructions-"
What?
Danger.
My wolf whispers to me a little too late, just as the guard pulls out his weapon.
My heart stills immediately, and I respond a second too late.
Not Remi though, immediately the guard lounges at me, my little wolf launches himself at him, and scratches his face.
Taken by surprise, he doesn't have the time to react quickly enough, and Remi's attack manages to distract him.
His weapon falls to the ground, and I take a step back, preparing to run immediately Remi returns to my hold.
"Remi, quick."
Then we're both running in the opposite direction. My gown nearly catching in my feet, almost causing me to slip.
The guard reacts even faster this time.
Quickly, he is upon me in hot pursuit, and I almost feel like he might strike me, until I fall into something...Or someone.
The man in front of me looks haggard, and injured, and his eyes plead for mercy.
"My Luna! Oh, I am so grateful to have found you." His voice is weak, but he manages to bow down towards me.
When I turn towards the guard in pursuit of me, I find no one there.
What? Where did he go?
"What are you doing here?" I ask the man in front of me, but he doesn't answer.
Instead he pulls me towards him. "My Luna, we have to return to the camp. The prophecy. We need-"
He is cut short, when an arrow lunges itself in his shoulders.
I gasp, and turn in the direction of the attack, but I see my grandmother and some of our guards.
My sigh of relief is short-lived when I hear the painful sound coming from the man.
"Grandmother, please he is not a threat. What is happening?"
My mind still can't wrap around the fact that I'd almost been killed mere minutes ago.
Who would want me dead?
"Step away from him, child. He is a rogue."
My eyes widen. A rogue? But he saved me.
I turn towards the bleeding man. Was he sent to take me away?
I don't understand what is happening. "I'm telling you grandmother, he can't be. He just saved my life."
"Aria, that man is dangerous, step away." My grandmother's eyes are blood shot, and it's like she can't see me. The rogues are responsible for my parent's death, so I know she despises them, but why isn't she listening to me? I refuse to let this man die, rogue or not, until I at least speak to him. "The Prophecy, Luna. The-" This time his words don't break, but something as fast as the speed of light appears before him. One minute, he's stuttering for an answer, the next minute his head rolls in front of us. A scream tears from my throat before I can stop it. He's been killed. I raise my eyes to meet the perpetrator of this act, and my eyes meet stormy blue ones. Cassius Emberwing.KaidenI had wasted enough time with this…stranger, Darien. Time was far spent, and I wondered where Aria was and how she was doing. Despite the fact that she had my shadows with her, I couldn't help but worry.“I'm done playing this game with you, Darien. I’ll be off, consider that as me letting you off.” I said.He let out a dry laugh, then his face turned serious like he didn't just laugh a while ago.“I guess you're done asking questions, shadow king.” His eyes held a taunting look.“And I guess you're done with your pretense too.”“You and I know very well who is the pretender between us.” His lips curled.“I shall put the rest of my time in better use.” I walked past him, heading towards the doors of the dungeon.“Not so fast, shadow king.” I felt a whoosh behind my ears as he appeared before me, with the tip of his sword pressed on my neck.“Just one more move, and that would be the end. Then by tomorrow, the headlines would be, “Shadow king found dead in the dungeon with his
AriaRiven was still unconscious. The physicians from the tower said he had been injected with some kind of drugs, in an over dose. Though it wouldn't cause him any harm, it was the reason for his unconsciousness.“How do you see Avarish milady? Beautiful, isn't it?” I heard Varaeys say.I snapped out of my thoughts, I hadn't even been observing anything. The carriage window was slightly opened so I poked my head out.“Careful, else some rebels chop your head off with a clean slice.” He chuckled, but I didn't find it funny as I slowly turned to glare at him subtly.“Ahem, I guess your sense of humour is quite low milady.” His lips curled. For someone I just meant, he was hell bent on getting on my nerves.“Come to think of it, I don't even know your name.” He raised a brow.“I'm—” I paused, unable to continue. What if he finds out who I truly was? That I was the granddaughter of the deceased head of the Flynn pack. What if he was one of granny's frenemies?I had to be careful, but if
Aria I felt my heart beating so fast that I feared I might have a heart attack. It didn't help that to me, it seemed the horses were running quite slowly. “You have to be calm, milady. You look like you’re about to faint.” I heard Varaeys say as the horse galloped. My lips pursed as I threw him a slight glare. Someone I knew was about to die, and he was cracking jokes. If we were in a vehicle, I was sure we would have reached his goddamned pack since. What was Riven doing in Avarish? It was quite far from the rogue pack. I wondered what he could have done that could have led to them, wanting to behead him. “What was his offence?” I asked, amidst the noises that emanated from the galloping. “Nmm, I don't know. But, I know he was sent to another pack of ours to be beheaded. I heard he committed treason, but the pack didn't have the ability to behead him so they sent him to us. Avarish has quite a reputation of punishing traitors, even for other packs.” He uttered. Treason? I scof
Riven I looked at Piper, unsure if what she was hinting at or what she meant by Kaiden took us for fools. “And what do you mean by that?” “Alot Riven, quite a lot.” She laughed as she deliberately walked slowly towards me, sashaying as her hips swung from side to side. Now that I noticed, she was dressed in a gown, shorter than normal; at least to me. Then she stood in front of me, using her fingers to draw lines on her chest through the shirt I wore. My body stiffened, and I immediately felt tense. “Stop it, Piper.” I growled. “Stop what?” She tilted her head to the side, feigning ignorance. “Whatever shit you're trying to do with me.” I gritted my teeth. “Oh really, so it's working. I was right, you indeed feel…something for me.” She chuckled. “In your dreams.” I said, albeit knowing she was right. But I would rather die than accept that. Those feelings were something that was slowly dying off, and it wouldn't take long before it disappeared, at least. “What do you mea
AriaThe figure walked towards me, and I noticed the person’s posture, it looked stunted. But it could possibly be a child, right? But why would a child be on a horse in this kind of environment, something didn't seem right. Unless it's what I'm thinking…The figure removed the mask, revealing a matured, manly face with long blonde locks, and green eyes. His head was bigger than the rest of his bother, he was a dwarf. The shadows had left me again, in the presence of strangers. I didn't understand the game they were playing. One moment they were hovering around me protectively, the other, they were gone.“I'm Varaeys, the second prince of Avarish, the merchant kingdom and wolf pack. You are pretty, and I shall sell you for a great fortune.” The short man stroked his chin as his eyes raked my body.I stared at him for a while, and then at his horses and men. Who uses a horse in this modern age? And here he was, spewing about how he was going to make a fortune off me.If I thought I had
Aria I said nothing in reply to his question, but instead took careful steps till I was at the door. “I'm right.” He chuckled.Did I really care for Kaiden? Deny it as I may, deep down, I knew the answer to that question.“You know, even if you decide to run away from me, I would still catch you. Or maybe not.” He paused, staring at the shadows with a look filled with hate, disgust and fear.“Considering those…things hover around you. But tell me, where were they when you were captured, sold, treated like an animal?” He asked.I had no answer to the questions, and I had no idea why they were here now. But I knew one thing, if I needed to escape this place in one piece, I needed them. “You're finally scared of something.” I muttered, “And I guess it's to my advantage, as I can leave without fear of you harming me.”“You think I’ll kill you.” He laughed dryly, “I know I’m a monster. But do you think of me as the worst monster to ever exist?”For a fleeting moment, I thought I saw pa
