Soren's POV

I sat on the couch, watching my mother pace back and forth while Marie huddled in a corner, quietly sobbing. I didn’t care how either of them felt. All I could think about was Catherine, how she was doing, what she was feeling. Evander had taken her back to their hotel after the scene I’d caused, and neither of them had shown up to the reception. I hadn’t bothered going either.

My mother had spent the last hour doing damage control, weaving lies into half-truths, trying to soften the rumors that were already spreading like wildfire.

“I expect an explanation from you, Soren,” my mother finally said, her voice slicing through the thick silence. “What exactly happened back there?”

“Stick to the scolding part. You’ve got five minutes.” I didn’t look up from my wristwatch.

Her lips trembled. Marie gasped softly.

“How dare you speak to your mother that way, Soren?”

“If I wasn’t talking to you,” I said flatly, “then you have no part in this conversation.”

“I do, Soren.” Marie’s v

Catherine's Pov"I..I.." I fumbled for words, my mind completely blank with terror. Just then, a loud, metallic ripping sound tore through the air, causing all of us to flinch violently. The sound was like a car door being torn right off its hinges. David's gun immediately left my temple as he and Tyler whipped their heads around to examine where the noise had come from. They were met with the heavy, sickening thud of a lifeless body hitting the pavement outside the car.A deafening, guttural roar erupted through the tunnel, echoing off the concrete walls. I didn't need to think any further. I didn't need to see him. I knew. Soren was here.My heart rate skyrocketed. I quickly bent over, trying to hush a screaming Esme as I fumbled blindly in the footwell with my free hand. My fingers closed around the cold plastic of the pepper spray Tyler had discarded. With shaky, frantic hands, I aimed it at the two vampires in the front seat and pressed the nozzle, squeezing my eyes shut. I let

Catherine's PovThey had arrived at 8:50pm, right on time. A text message flickered on my phone, lighting up the screen just as I finished tying the lace of Esme's tiny shoes. My heart was hammering against my ribs. After I finished my call with Mark, a deep sense of unease had settled over me. I had dropped by a store on the way back to the hotel, my hands shaking as I purchased a small taser and a can of pepper spray, stuffing them both into the depths of the diaper bag. I didn't want to blindly trust these people, but I also couldn't afford to turn down this deal. It was our only way out.I was desperately hoping that the universe would finally be gracious to me, that it would give me one reason to smile after everything I had been through. My funds were critically low; I could only pay for the hotel for one more week, and that was it.Down in the hotel lobby, two men were waiting for me. They were casually dressed in dark jeans and jackets, and they offered me warm, professional

Catherine's Pov"Isn't that what makes it different?" I asked suddenly, the words rushing out before I could stop them. My question grabbed her attention just as she withdrew the finger she had intended to use to end the call. She paused, her hand hovering over the keyboard. She raised a brow, her expression one of mild curiosity. "What do you mean, exactly?""The sheer unpredictability of my work," I began, my voice gaining a sliver of confidence. "That's the core of 'Cry Me A River.' What you see as a weakness could actually be its greatest strength. Look, every trend that was ever followed, every cliche that was ever uniquely twisted, and every new character born in a new book was originally created because someone was inspired by something else. But the genesis of that original blueprint, the very first one, was also something completely different that the world had never seen before. It was written by someone who dared to bring something new to the table. I'm trying to do that."

Catherine's Pov.I forced a small, polite smile at the hotel attendant as I took the steaming cup of coffee from her. The cheap ceramic was almost too hot to hold. "Thank you," I murmured, my voice still rough from a night of little sleep. I turned and walked back to my room, shutting the door. My single suitcase lay open on the bed, half-filled with the few things Esme and I owned. I had already packed most of our things for the day, a nervous energy driving me to be ready to move at a moment's notice. Esme was sitting propped up against the pillows, fully dressed in a little yellow onesie, watching me with those big, curious eyes of hers. She babbled softly, a string of happy, nonsensical sounds that I couldn't quite understand but that warmed my heart anyway.I smiled at her, a real one this time, and took a sip of the bitter coffee before setting it down on the nightstand. I continued packing, folding a tiny sweater with more care than it needed. It's been two long, tense days si

Catherine's Pov.I was walking as fast as I could, my heels clicking a frantic rhythm against the pavement. Esme's hot, even breath puffed against my arm, a small, steady reminder that she was okay, that she was alive. That single sensation was the only thing giving me hope and keeping me from completely falling apart. I needed to get out of here immediately, to put as much distance as possible between us and him, and between us and the bloody, broken remains of what I thought was my life. How could I have been so incredibly dumb? Why was I so blind to see the truth staring me in the face? Why would a powerful witch save me from certain death without expecting a damn thing in return? Nothing in their world came for free, especially not magic. I was a fool to believe in a kindness that had strings attached, strings that were now wrapped around my daughter's neck.I can't beat myself up for it too much right now, not when I need to keep moving. There's another publishing company, a sma

Soren's PovThe car came to a wild, screeching stop right at the border. It was a hidden place near the international airport, a secluded corner of the entrance that officially kept the human and lycanthrope worlds apart.Catherine hadn't said a single word to me the entire drive. She didn't try to argue about Emma anymore. It was like, deep down, a part of her had already started to believe it too. Or maybe she was just waiting to see the confirmation for herself. She hadn't believed the wedding rumors until she heard it directly from me, until she saw the proof with her own eyes. She always needed something solid to prompt her trust, or her distrust. It was the same that night on the balcony. She hadn't believed my declaration of love back then either, she thought it was merely flirting. I could read the doubt right through her eyes. She's always been so painfully easy to read. Would it have been that way with us if that maid hadn't interrupted? Would it have just been a one night s
