Zara

I stared at the message for four minutes.

Will you be at Velvet tomorrow?

I knew what the right answer was. The safe answer. The answer that kept walls intact and worlds separate and the careful architecture of my double life from developing any more cracks than it already had.

I typed: Maybe.

His response came in under a minute.

I’ll take my chances.

I read it twice. Set the phone face down. Picked it up and read it again.

Then I went to bed and didn’t sleep.

The dressing room felt differ

ZaraHe was already there when I walked in.No drink. No phone. Just Adrian in the leather chair with his jacket folded across his knee and his eyes on the door like he had been watching it for a while.“You’re late,” he said.“I’m exactly on time.”“I know.” Something settled in his expression. “I was just early.”I let the door close behind me and understood in the first ten seconds that tonight was different. Not the careful observer from the early weeks. Not the investigator with his quiet questions and his patient collection of data points.Just a man who had come because he wanted to be here. That was the most dangerous version of him yet.I moved through the opening slowly. No urgency. No performance mechanics. Just the music and the amber light and the particular attention of someone who had stopped pretending he was here for any reason other than me.He wasn’t studying anymore. He was watching. There’s a difference and I felt it the shift from assessment to something warmer a

Same three perfumes competing for dominance. But I sat in front of my reflection doing what I always did foundation, lashes, red lips, the slow construction of Pinky and nothing was landing right.Because I kept hearing it.I should’ve said goodbye.Six words. Quietly delivered to the floor of my living room while the television played on mute. Not dramatic. Not a grand gesture. Just Adrian being honest in the small way that had always been more dan

ZaraI smelled the beer before I opened the door. Then laughter Kofi’s first, loud and unguarded, the version he only used when he was completely comfortable. And underneath it another laugh I recognized before I was ready to.I stood in the doorway of my own living room with my bag on my shoulder and my club makeup still on my face and Adrian sitting on my couch like he had never left. For one terrible second I forgot which version of myself I was supposed to be.Then Kofi looked up. “There she is. We ordered pizza. Yours is in the kitchen.”I moved. Automatic. Normal.*Zara. You are Zara. You have been Zara all day.*I changed in four minutes and scrubbed my face clean and came back down in a hoodie and old shorts and told myself the tight feeling in my chest was tiredness. They were arguing about a call on the field when I came back through. Adrian glanced up a quick assessment, same as always and then back to the screen. Kofi threw a pillow at him about something and Adrian cau

ZaraMy nine o’clock lecturer said something about contract law that I didn’t catch because I was still on a street two blocks from Velvet watching a man stand under a streetlight making sure I got home safe.I wrote contract law in my notebook and underlined it so it looked like I was paying attention. Why was he waiting outside?I underlined it again.Would he have done that for anyone? The girl beside me leaned over. “You okay? You’ve written the same thing four times.”I looked down. Contract law. Contract law. Contract law. Contract law.“Fine,” I said. “Long night.”I flipped to a new page and started over.Kofi was on the phone when I got home. Kitchen door half closed, voice low in that particular way that meant he wasn’t having a conversation he wanted witnessed.I stood in the hallway and listened to the shape of it, not words, just rhythm. Short answers. Long silences. The specific tension of someone receiving information they weren’t happy about. He came out ten minutes la

ZaraI told myself three things on the way to Velvet.Adrian wouldn’t come tonight. If he did I’d keep my distance. I needed money, not feelings.I believed none of them.He wasn’t in VIP three.Mikela confirmed it before I asked which meant I’d asked with my face without realizing it. I found him at the bar instead, jacket on, drink in hand, watching the floor with that patient unreadable expression. Not requesting anyone.Just watching. That was worse. Every other night I knew his next move. Tonight I didn’t, and the not knowing sat under my skin like a splinter I couldn’t locate.I went to get dressed.“Big spender,” Mikela said, nodding toward the VIP corridor. “Asked for you specifically. He’s clean, has a good record, and tips well.”“Name?”“Marcus Cole. Property developer. Been coming here for six months.” She handed me the booking slip. “Don’t say no.”I didn’t.Marcus Cole was handsome in the easy way of men who had always been handsome and knew it without being ruined by i

Zara’s POV The campus café was the one place I allowed myself to breathe. No performance required. No mask to maintain. Just Zara with a lukewarm coffee and a textbook she was actually reading and forty minutes before her next class where nothing was required of her except to exist quietly.I had been sitting there eleven minutes when the chair across from me scraped back.Adrian sat down. Not asking. Not hesitating. Just there, suddenly, with a coffee of his own and the particular ease of a man who had decided his presence was already welcome. My stomach dropped clean to the floor.*Why is he here? Did he follow me? How does he know my schedule? What does he“You look surprised,” he said.“I am surprised.” I kept my voice even. “This is my campus.”“Kofi asked me to drop something off at the admin building.” He set his coffee down. Relaxed. Almost casual. “Saw you through the window.”Almost casual.Because his eyes were doing what they always did, that slow, patient inventory that

Zara’s PovHe was already too close when I turned around.I hadn’t heard him move. One moment there was distance between us and the next there wasn’t just Adrian in the narrow space between the dressing room corridor and the back exit, one hand flat against the wall beside my head, not touching me

Zara’s Pov I sat on the edge of my bed and stared at nothing. The heels were off. The makeup half removed, one side of my face clean and the other still painted. I hadn’t finished because somewhere between the cotton pad and the mirror I had stopped moving entirely.I’ll be back tomorrow night.Hi

Zara’s Pov I had done this a hundred times. That was what I told myself as I moved toward the small stage, each step measured and unhurried. The amber light was forgiving. The music from the main floor filled the silence without covering it. The room was familiar.None of that was helping.Because

Zara’s PovThe girl in the mirror didn’t look like someone who had eleven days to save her enrollment. She looked like trouble.Red lips. Smoky eyes. A body poured into scraps of black lace that left very little to imagination. I held her gaze for a moment and felt the familiar pull of that quiet v
