I gripped the edge of the blanket so hard my knuckles went white, and turned my face to the window.

Even with the window open, not a single breeze drifted in.

The doctor's words were still echoing in my ears.

"The crash did serious damage to your body. Getting pregnant again will be very difficult."

Every beat of my heart hurt.

The door opened behind me.

Matteo strode to the bedside and took my hand.

"I'm sorry I'm late."

He looked at the needle marks on the back of my hand, his brows knitting tight, then tucked the blanket around me.

"Does it still hurt, sweetheart?"

His palm was warm. My clenched fingers slowly loosened.

"About Chiara, I'm apologizing to you on her behalf. I promise it won't happen again."

He softened his voice.

"She was just being reckless. She never meant to hurt you."

I looked down at my belly, where a hollow ache sat.

Her so-called recklessness had taken the child we'd waited five years for.

Five years of marriage, and I'd never been able to get pregnant.

Then a week ago, two pink lines finally showed up on the test.

I'd wanted to surprise Matteo with the news.

Instead, the joy became a death knell.

"Matteo, there's something I need to tell you..."

His phone ringtone cut me off.

He answered, and his brows immediately pulled together.

"What is it?"

Chiara's sobbing came through the line.

"Don, someone's harassing me at the bar..."

Matteo shot to his feet.

"Stay there. Don't move. I'm on my way."

He hung up and leaned down to brush his lips against my forehead.

"Something came up with Chiara. I'll go check on it and be back soon."

The doctor stepped forward with the medical file.

"Mr. Moretti, regarding your wife's surgery—"

"Please take good care of her. Whatever it is, we'll talk when I get back."

He hurried off without asking what I'd wanted to say.

I pulled my hand back under the blanket and told the doctor,

"Let me rest for a while."

The door clicked shut.

The room went quiet, with only the monitor by the bed keeping me company.

Beep. Beep. Beep.

Like the sound of tears hitting the floor.

A long while later, I braced myself on the edge of the bed, wanting a drink of water.

A sharp cramp tore through my abdomen, and my arm gave out.

My sleeve caught the cup and sent it shattering across the floor.

I stared blankly at the water spreading, and it took me a moment to remember to press the call button.

My fingertip had just touched the button when the door suddenly swung open.

Matteo walked in, Chiara trailing behind him, clutching his sleeve.

He carried the smell of alcohol and unfamiliar perfume, and my stomach lurched.

Seeing the shards everywhere, he frowned in mild exasperation.

"What? Still angry?"

Chiara peeked timidly from behind his shoulder.

"Donna, I really didn't mean it. I was just testing a new program and didn't expect a bug..."

"It was an accident," Matteo cut in. "No one wanted this. It's over now."

"Chiara got harassed at the bar just now and cried for ages, but she insisted on coming to the hospital to see you."

He took my hand, his voice gentle. "Only family cares about you this much."

I looked down at his hand.

The calluses from years of gripping a gun dug into my skin, hurting.

"Family?"

My voice came out hoarse. "Matteo, I almost died in that car."

His grip tightened a fraction.

"Don't throw a tantrum."

He glanced at the bodyguards posted outside the door, his voice dropping.

"My men are right outside. Don't let them hear a joke like this."

Chiara tugged lightly at his sleeve.

"Don," she said, rubbing her eyes, "it's my fault. I'll accept the family's judgment."

"Don't talk nonsense. With me here, who'd dare judge you?"

Matteo let go of my hand to wipe her tears.

I looked at my empty palm and said nothing more.

So his apology only went as far as not holding Chiara accountable.

Only when a smile returned to her face did he turn back to me.

"By the way, what was it you wanted to tell me?"

I looked at him.

The words I hadn't gotten to say, I suddenly didn't want to say anymore.

"Nothing."

He tucked the blanket around me.

"Then rest for now. I'll take Chiara home. She's had a fright and needs to rest properly."

With that, they left the room.

The door closed.

Once again, I was alone in the hospital room.

Outside the window, rain had started to fall at some point.

The rain was like gray bandages, wrapping around the whole city.

I opened my phone and added a note to the date seven days from now.

I had just gotten back from the Mediterranean. The first thing I did was sit down to the home-cooked breakfast I'd been craving.Truffle scrambled eggs, beef carpaccio, fresh-baked sourdough, and a pour-over Geisha coffee. The sunlight was perfect outside, spilling through the floor-to-ceiling windows onto the table, bright and gentle. The butler came in to announce that Matteo wanted to see me just as I finished the last sip of my coffee."He says he received the divorce papers you signed and wants to talk to you in person."I took my time wiping my mouth with the napkin. So he's here to refuse to sign. These past six months or so hadn't been easy for Matteo.Dad had used the war to take a good chunk of Moretti territory.Because of that, Matteo lost the position of Don.Dad handed all those assets and fortunes over to me to deal with as I saw fit.I cashed out part of the wealth and gave it to the button men who'd been badly hurt at the docks. That money was enough to keep them fed a

Matteo's POVMatteo turned to the butler, his face ashen."Where's the Donna's place setting? Why isn't it on the table?"The butler flinched and defended himself. "The Donna hasn't been back in three months..."Matteo slammed his hand on the table."What if she comes back suddenly? Set it!"The butler hurried to have a place setting arranged at the empty spot. The spot that belonged to the Donna, Bianca Moretti.Chiara reached over and patted the back of Matteo's hand."It's been three months. It's time for you to let go, Don."Matteo whipped his head around to glare at her. Chiara timidly pulled her hand back.Matteo sawed furiously at the steak on his plate, as if that could quell the rage inside him.For three months, he had personally confirmed seven bodies found along the Charles River. Each time, he would breathe a sigh of relief and say, "It's not her."And then sink back into endless waiting. The bounty went from five million to ten million, and finally to no limit at all.Eve

"Come in."I swallowed the bite of fried egg and set down my fork.Dad pushed the door open and glanced at the table."Already eating?"I stuck my tongue out at him."I was hungry. Didn't wait for you."He sat down with a smile.I grabbed a knife and fork from the cart and slid them over.Dad took a bite of the egg and frowned. "A little overdone."I made to pull the plate back. "I made that myself, you know."He gave me an indulgent smile and finished the rest.Downstairs had long gone quiet.I'd heard Matteo's car leave.I'd told Dad I didn't want to see him, didn't want him to find me.So Dad patiently played along and put on a show for him. These past three days, I slept when I was tired and ate when I was hungry. However you treat the world, the world treats you back.So keep it simple.Dad wiped the corner of his mouth with his napkin."Bianca, are you sure you don't want to see Matteo again?"I nodded without hesitation. "Mm-hmm."I'd already answered that question for myself wh

Matteo's POVMatteo hadn't expected the gatekeeper at the Greco estate to let him in so easily.Every excuse he'd prepared on the way went unused. He found Don Greco in the garden, trimming roses. When Don Greco saw him, he walked over quickly and gave him a big hug.He even clapped him twice on the back. Then he stepped back and glanced behind Matteo."Just you? Where's Bianca?"Matteo opened his mouth. The crash, the miscarriage, her running away.Everything jammed in his throat, and he couldn't get out a single word. His heart began to sink, endlessly.Bianca hadn't come back? Then where was she?Was she hiding, or was she really at the bottom of the river? His tangled thoughts knotted into a noose and pulled tight around his neck.He felt like he couldn't breathe.Don smiled. "You came to see me? Bianca hates flying. She throwing a fit and refusing to come?"Matteo forced himself to nod."You look a little off. Come in, have some coffee. Matteo's POVThe old woman stared at Matteo, as if she'd finally realized she'd said too much."She told me herself when she came to the hospital to see us.""She said she understood the fear I felt. That she had just lost the child in her belly."The old woman lowered her eyes, her voice growing softer."Didn't she tell you?"Matteo's face was answer enough. The old woman didn't press further. She bowed to Matteo and walked slowly away, leaning on her cane.Matteo stood frozen. The only thing in his ears was a shrill buzz.A child? His and Bianca's child? When?Dazed, Matteo got back in the car."To the hospital. Matteo's POVBy the time the banquet began, Bianca's seat was still empty.Someone asked, "Where's Donna?"Matteo shrugged. "Probably stuck in traffic. Let's get started."He picked up the bottle and filled both his glass and Bianca's.Then he stood and raised his glass."First toast, to our Donna."Everyone echoed, "To our Donna."Chiara sat beside him in a white Saint Laurent dress. She touched her earring and said, her voice soft and sweet,"Toast to what?
