Chapter 1

Author: Nameless
"So Elijah was unjustly served the prison sentence of seven years? He was in there from 23 to 30—that's seven years of his prime," Lilian Murphy, my mother-in-law, said with a sigh.

My wife, Crystal Morgan, only replied, "I owe him for those seven years. I'll make it up to him in the future."

Just like that, with a casual promise that she would "make it up to me", my seven years behind bars were brushed aside.

Day after day, I sat in prison making umbrellas while Damon Stewart spent his days shopping in department stores.

I was confined to four walls, stripped of my freedom, while Damon enjoyed his freedom and traveled the world.

I lost seven precious years of my life and came out with a criminal record that made even finding a job difficult. On the other hand, Damon—the one who should have been behind bars—built a successful career and a happy family.

All of this stemmed from one thing—the fact that Crystal couldn't bear the thought of Damon spending seven years behind bars. To keep me from finding out how my parents really died, she made me serve Damon's seven-year sentence in his place.

My heart shattered into a million pieces, unable to be put back together ever again.

"Crystal, you're a lawyer, and you know this is illegal. Is Damon really that amazing? Is he worth you doing all this?" Lilian asked.

"Mom, you don't understand. Damon means everything to me. As long as he's doing well, I'm willing to do whatever it takes," Crystal responded with a gentle look on her face.

Lilian sighed. "Forget it. You destroyed Elijah's family and ruined his life. From now on, treat him well. Bear children for the Stewart family and make it up to him."

"Stop it, Mom. I've already had my tubes tied. I'm not having children with anyone but Damon. As for what I owe Elijah, I'll make it up by living well with him from now on."

Lilian's finger trembled as she pointed at Crystal. "You're going to leave our family without a bloodline? If you still refuse to make amends after everything you've done wrong, you'll pay for it someday."

"Mom, I really can't do it. Every time I got intimate with Elijah, I felt so sick that I wanted to throw up."

I felt my nose sting at those words.

Crystal had been trembling with fear on our wedding night. Out of respect, I didn't force myself on her.

So it was because I made her sick.

"You married him just so you could sign the leniency agreement as his family!" Lilian snapped, furious. "Now you dare to say he disgusts you? How did I ever end up with a daughter like you?"

"I didn't want this either. But if I hadn't done it this way, Elijah would never have let Damon go once he learned that the people who died were actually his parents."

It felt as though an invisible hand had closed around my heart, squeezing until I could barely breathe through the pain.

My memories returned to that horrific pileup. I had managed to crawl out of the wreckage, and in the car ahead, two people whose faces were covered in deep cuts were desperately waving at me for help.

Even though they looked familiar to me, I hadn't thought much of it at the time.

Now, thinking back, it seemed they had deliberately mutilated my parents' faces because they were afraid I would recognize them.

When I realized those two were my parents, I couldn't help but cough up a mouthful of blood.

Later on, someone reported that I had hit people with my car. I spent days running around trying to clear my name, never once realizing that the couple I had seen at the scene were actually my parents.

What I never could have imagined was that the childhood sweetheart who had defended me as my lawyer had married me for one reason—to sign the leniency agreement as a family member.

A look of sorrow crossed Crystal's face as she asked, "Elijah, do you resent me? I'm sorry. What happened to you was my fault. I had no idea Damon was that kind of person." She added, "And thank you for saving me back in high school."She took a step toward me, but I held out a hand to stop her."If I could go back to the past, I wouldn't have saved you," I said coldly. "From now on, if we ever cross paths again, let's just pretend we're strangers."With that, I turned and walked away.Crystal crouched on the floor, covering her face and wailing.…Damon had committed too many crimes, and he hadn't covered his tracks well enough. After I handed the police evidence that he had deliberately driven into my parents, he was arrested. The company he had worked so hard to build was also seized.Soon, he came running to beg me."Elijah, please, you have to help me. We were raised by the same parents, so we're brothers, aren't we? For the sake of the Stewart family name, please spare

Some time later, Damon decided to host a dinner party."Mr. Stewart, how did you manage to invite the new big shot official to come? I heard he's notoriously difficult to get a meeting with," someone said.Damon smiled smugly. Anyone who ran a company inevitably had to deal with government officials, and after a lot of effort, he had finally managed to invite an official from the Department of Audits for dinner.Just outside the private room, Oliver Atkins, the colleague who had come with me, suddenly needed to use the restroom. He told me to go in ahead of him.I pushed the door open and locked my eyes straight onto Damon."Damon, long time no see."My sudden appearance shocked everyone in the room.Damon shot to his feet. "Weren't you dead? What are you doing here? Well, even if you survived, it's too late. I already have the inheritance your parents left behind. Elijah, you're always destined to lose to me in this life," he remarked triumphantly. The people around him immedi

Crystal was crying so hard that she could barely speak. "Mom, I'll accept whatever blame you want to place on me. But what about Elijah? He isn't dead, right?"Lilian broke down sobbing. "He's dead. Elijah's dead. These are his remains."Crystal stepped forward and looked at the charred remains of a body."That's impossible… Elijah, how could you die? You said you would be with me forever. I was wrong! I shouldn't have used your love for me to hurt you like this."After saying those words, she passed out.…Meanwhile, I woke up in a hospital room overseas. The moment I came to after surgery, I called Jared Hale. He was a man with connections and remarkable abilities whom I had met in prison. The plunge off the cliff, staging my death—that had all been part of our plan."Focus on recovering. You have access to the best medical care here. They'll get you back on your feet," Jared said.He continued, "You brat, you've been out of prison for less than two weeks, and you've alread

"Crystal Morgan, you're truly heartless. Why did I have to meet you? I regret it so much!" I shouted.A sudden sense of panic rose in Crystal's chest, making her feel as though she had lost something precious. She couldn't find the slightest trace of affection left in my eyes.Damon turned to Crystal and said, "Elijah took the token of love you gave me. Can you help me get it back? I can give him anything he wants, but not the bracelet you made yourself. It means too much to me."Crystal stuck her hand out. "Hand it over.""It's mine. I'm not giving it back.""Elijah!" she roared, reaching over to snatch it from me.I clutched it tightly. "This is made from my parents' ashes. No one can take it away from me.""Elijah, can you stop this? I made the bracelet myself. They're just ordinary diamonds. How could they possibly be your parents' ashes? I know you're jealous of Damon, but even if you want the bracelet, you can't say something like that," Crystal said, disapproval evident i

I was just as stunned, but I didn't dare let myself hope for anything more.Damon and I were both taken to the hospital. Just when I thought I was finally going to receive treatment, I realized I had only entered another nightmare.I was strapped to the operating table, but the doctors never made a move."Ms. Morgan, the patient has severe damage in multiple areas and isn't suitable for a kidney transplant," the lead surgeon said."There's no time. If we don't do it now, I'll never get another chance once he's in prison. I'm ordering you to start the surgery immediately," Crystal said with a cold look.I couldn't believe what I was hearing. I tried to struggle out of my restraints, but the anesthesia had left my entire body weak.I stared intently at Crystal as numerous emotions swirled through my eyes. She averted her gaze, ignoring my plea. She bent down and kissed my forehead, saying, "I'm sorry, Elijah. I can't just sit back and watch Damon die. If I could, I'd give him one

"No! Your parents are alive and well. They're traveling abroad," Crystal insisted.I pulled out my parents' death certificates. "They've been dead for seven years, but I'm only finding out now."You lied to me and kept me from seeing my parents one last time. You're the reason I lost my parents. You're the reason I went seven years without even being able to visit their graves."Every word cut deep enough to make whoever was listening tear up."Elijah, that's not how it happened. Who told you this?" Crystal screamed, looking around like a madwoman. "Who told him?"I shook my head. "No one told me. I overheard it myself. I found out the day I got out of prison."That car accident was your doing too. As for my leg… Since you love Damon this much, I'll give you what you want. Sign the divorce papers. I never want to see you again."I squeezed my eyes shut, afraid of showing even the slightest hint of weakness.Crystal and I had been childhood sweethearts. Before I returned to the
