Chapter 2

Autor: Nameless
Back then, after I was reviled by everyone, only Crystal stayed by my side. She had been my only light in the suffocating darkness.

I had never imagined that she was the one who pushed me into the darkness—just to repay a debt of gratitude.

Crystal told me that Lilian, an accountant, had been tricked into falsifying the accounts. She was worried that her old and frail mother wouldn't survive prison.

Without a second thought, I gave up the civil service position I had just earned and volunteered to serve Lilian's ten-year sentence in her place. And seven years later, Crystal managed to get me released.

Never once did I imagine this was nothing but a trap laid just for me.

"Elijah already went to prison because of you. Why did you have to tell the victims' families?" Lilian questioned angrily.

Crystal shook her head, saying, "Damon killed three people. One of them was an elderly woman whose son is serving time for organized crime. Once he gets out, he'll definitely come seeking revenge against Damon. I couldn't allow even the slightest risk to his safety.

"I could only send Elijah to the same prison. Besides, Elijah said he'd do anything for me. He'll understand."

Everything suddenly fell into place for me. There was a large, intimidating man in prison who had tormented me for years, and I had always thought he simply had it out for me.

But it turned out Crystal had led him to believe I was responsible for his mother's death.

I'd lost count of how many beatings I endured over the past seven years, and the only thing that kept me going all that time was my love for Crystal.

As I touched my crooked pinky, I laughed silently until tears welled up in my eyes.

So this was how much Crystal loved Damon, to the point she had been willing to go this far for him.

Just then, Crystal noticed me standing nearby. "Elijah, when did you get out? You didn't overhear anything, did you?"

Panic flashed through her eyes, while Lilian's face clouded with guilt.

"I just got out," I lied smoothly.

Crystal sighed, the relief unmistakable in her voice. "That's good."

She then rushed over and wrapped her arms tightly around my waist, burying her face against my chest. "Elijah, you're finally out. From now on, let's live a good life together."

On the inside, my heart had gone completely cold. I didn't want Crystal or her false love anymore.

"Elijah, do you know how much I missed you every single day you were in prison?" Crystal said, her expression filled with utter affection.

If I hadn't overheard everything, I really would have believed her.

Beside us, my cellmate observed the scene, looking as though he wanted to say something but hesitated.

Everyone in prison envied me. Even after I was locked away, my wife never abandoned me. Instead, she waited for me for seven years.

Every month, without fail, she came to visit. She brought me clothes and food. She would shower me with utmost care.

I used to take pride in that. But when I thought back to it now, I realized that act was never real.

My cellmate, who had always looked at me with envy, now looked at me with nothing but pity. He patted me on the shoulder before leaving.

"Crystal, why didn't my parents come pick me up?" I asked.

She averted her eyes in a panic. "They went on vacation."

"Really?"

"Of course. Don't you trust me?"

I stared intently into her eyes as I said, "I do."

Crystal said nothing more and pulled me into the car.

On the way home, a blinding light flashed in the distance, and our car drove straight into a wall. I passed out after that.

When I woke again, a searing pain shot through my lower body. My kneecap had been fractured so badly that I could no longer stand.

I wanted to look for Crystal, but then I heard Lilian arguing with her outside the hospital room.

"Crystal, what are you trying to do?" Lilian asked. "After everything you've already done to Elijah, you still won't leave him alone. You were driving the car perfectly fine. Why did you suddenly swerve?"

"Mom, there's still a year left before the statute of limitations on Damon's case expires. What if Elijah finds out the truth? I'll only feel at ease if his legs are broken and he can't go anywhere," Crystal argued.

"If that's the case, then why did you have him released early? Wouldn't it have been better to just make him serve the full ten years?"

"I missed him. From now on, I'll be his legs."

"You're no daughter of mine," Lilian said furiously. "I'm going to tell Elijah the truth."

"Mom, please! Just pretend you don't know anything. If Elijah finds out, he'll hate me!"

"Since you know that, why did you still do it? I have to tell him."

"Do you really want me to watch as Damon goes to prison? Do you want me to die right in front of you, huh, Mom?"

In the end, Lilian relented and chose to remain silent.

Unable to hold on anymore, I collapsed to the floor.

Crystal looked over in alarm. "Elijah! How did you fall?"

A look of sorrow crossed Crystal's face as she asked, "Elijah, do you resent me? I'm sorry. What happened to you was my fault. I had no idea Damon was that kind of person." She added, "And thank you for saving me back in high school."She took a step toward me, but I held out a hand to stop her."If I could go back to the past, I wouldn't have saved you," I said coldly. "From now on, if we ever cross paths again, let's just pretend we're strangers."With that, I turned and walked away.Crystal crouched on the floor, covering her face and wailing.…Damon had committed too many crimes, and he hadn't covered his tracks well enough. After I handed the police evidence that he had deliberately driven into my parents, he was arrested. The company he had worked so hard to build was also seized.Soon, he came running to beg me."Elijah, please, you have to help me. We were raised by the same parents, so we're brothers, aren't we? Some time later, Damon decided to host a dinner party."Mr. Stewart, how did you manage to invite the new big shot official to come? I heard he's notoriously difficult to get a meeting with," someone said.Damon smiled smugly. Anyone who ran a company inevitably had to deal with government officials, and after a lot of effort, he had finally managed to invite an official from the Department of Audits for dinner.Just outside the private room, Oliver Atkins, the colleague who had come with me, suddenly needed to use the restroom. He told me to go in ahead of him.I pushed the door open and locked my eyes straight onto Damon."Damon, long time no see."My sudden appearance shocked everyone in the room.Damon shot to his feet. "Weren't you dead? What are you doing here? Well, even if you survived, it's too late. I already have the inheritance your parents left behind. Elijah, you're always destined to lose to me in this life," he remarked triumphantly. The people around him immedi

Crystal was crying so hard that she could barely speak. "Mom, I'll accept whatever blame you want to place on me. But what about Elijah? He isn't dead, right?"Lilian broke down sobbing. "He's dead. Elijah's dead. These are his remains."Crystal stepped forward and looked at the charred remains of a body."That's impossible… Elijah, how could you die? You said you would be with me forever. I was wrong! I shouldn't have used your love for me to hurt you like this."After saying those words, she passed out.…Meanwhile, I woke up in a hospital room overseas. The moment I came to after surgery, I called Jared Hale. He was a man with connections and remarkable abilities whom I had met in prison. The plunge off the cliff, staging my death—that had all been part of our plan."Focus on recovering. You have access to the best medical care here. They'll get you back on your feet," Jared said.He continued, "You brat, you've been out of prison for less than two weeks, and you've alread

"Crystal Morgan, you're truly heartless. Why did I have to meet you? I regret it so much!" I shouted.A sudden sense of panic rose in Crystal's chest, making her feel as though she had lost something precious. She couldn't find the slightest trace of affection left in my eyes.Damon turned to Crystal and said, "Elijah took the token of love you gave me. Can you help me get it back? I can give him anything he wants, but not the bracelet you made yourself. It means too much to me."Crystal stuck her hand out. "Hand it over.""It's mine. I'm not giving it back.""Elijah!" she roared, reaching over to snatch it from me.I clutched it tightly. "This is made from my parents' ashes. No one can take it away from me.""Elijah, can you stop this? I made the bracelet myself. They're just ordinary diamonds. How could they possibly be your parents' ashes? I know you're jealous of Damon, but even if you want the bracelet, you can't say something like that," Crystal said, disapproval evident i

I was just as stunned, but I didn't dare let myself hope for anything more.Damon and I were both taken to the hospital. Just when I thought I was finally going to receive treatment, I realized I had only entered another nightmare.I was strapped to the operating table, but the doctors never made a move."Ms. Morgan, the patient has severe damage in multiple areas and isn't suitable for a kidney transplant," the lead surgeon said."There's no time. If we don't do it now, I'll never get another chance once he's in prison. I'm ordering you to start the surgery immediately," Crystal said with a cold look.I couldn't believe what I was hearing. I tried to struggle out of my restraints, but the anesthesia had left my entire body weak.I stared intently at Crystal as numerous emotions swirled through my eyes. She averted her gaze, ignoring my plea. She bent down and kissed my forehead, saying, "I'm sorry, Elijah. I can't just sit back and watch Damon die. If I could, I'd give him one

"No! Your parents are alive and well. They're traveling abroad," Crystal insisted.I pulled out my parents' death certificates. "They've been dead for seven years, but I'm only finding out now."You lied to me and kept me from seeing my parents one last time. You're the reason I lost my parents. You're the reason I went seven years without even being able to visit their graves."Every word cut deep enough to make whoever was listening tear up."Elijah, that's not how it happened. Who told you this?" Crystal screamed, looking around like a madwoman. "Who told him?"I shook my head. "No one told me. I overheard it myself. I found out the day I got out of prison."That car accident was your doing too. As for my leg… Since you love Damon this much, I'll give you what you want. Sign the divorce papers. I never want to see you again."I squeezed my eyes shut, afraid of showing even the slightest hint of weakness.Crystal and I had been childhood sweethearts. Before I returned to the
