INICIAR SESIÓN
POV: River Lockhart
The last thing I wanted was to fall in love with a police officer.
Every scene that happened during the exquisite lunch looped in my head. It wasn't the first time my father acted that way toward me. Plates slamming against the wall behind me, and his wife screaming at the top of her lungs to stop us from using any violence, while the waiter beside us kept count of the tableware that my father destroyed.
It was my father's birthday, and yesterday I received an invitation from his wife asking me to attend the lunch as he would be happy to see me. I wore a plain shirt beneath and a black jacket to show a little formality, but I never went for a proper tuxedo because I believed it wouldn't be an issue.
Things were all under control. The venue was good, and it was lit dimly to make it appear even more elite. The aroma in the private room made me feel at ease, although I felt like a stranger in there.
That was when my father came in through the doors with his wife clinging to his side, holding his upper arm and whispering something in his ear, to which he laughed a deep chuckle. (My step-brother, Chase, didn't come to the dinner as he was abroad in France, completing his studies.) I almost had my eyes rolling, but I held it in. As he sat in front of me, I stood up and presented him with the black leather box in which I had a nice watch as his gift.
He nodded in affirmation but didn't look too happy to see it. My eyes shifted to the gift his wife was giving him. But my eyes almost instantly caught the bracelet she was wearing.
It belonged to my mom.
Why. This woman, my father's current wife, had all the expensive things she could ask for. Hundreds of different jewellery pieces and bracelets, and she even owned a jewellery shop where she had met my father.
Why was she wearing my mom's bracelet out of all?
Afterwards, what I saw was only red in my eyes.
~.~
"Fuck. Go on the correct path, you wuss." I curse at the vehicle in front of me, which goes so slow and boils my blood, as I am already mad. My hand bangs against the horn for the tenth time in a row, leaving it red against the leather. But the pain in my hand doesn't bother me the slightest. It is the driver in front of me who drives me mad.
"Chill, River. The fact that your father scolded you doesn't mean you can drive like this. You are going to kill yourself if you drive like this! At least think about my poor life here! I am not part of anything," my best friend, Lucas Turner, says with his blue eyes widening as he sends his hand through his dirty blond hair.
But once again, I slam my hand against the horn in anger.
"That bitch is the reason! Ever since my dad married that gold digger, he's been disrespecting my mom! She was wearing my mom's bracelet! My mom used to wear it before she died!" I exclaim.
"Well... you could've ignored her only for this time. You love your mom, and that matters the most." Lucas reasons.
"No way! Dad acts like his late wife doesn't even matter to him. It was last week, and he didn't even attend the ten-year death anniversary of my mom. How can I calm down?" I ask him.
"Um. Kinda fair in that sense," he says, watching the vehicle in front of us.
I am in no mood to fight. If I were, I would've already slammed my vehicle against theirs and picked a fight with them. I just want to drive my anger away.
The vehicle in front of us comes to a stop, so I change gears and drive past it at high speed in the wrong lane, overtaking around ten vehicles, and the speed meter shows 90 miles per hour.
"A police officer might stop us," Lucas says, holding onto his seat and looking a bit concerned. But as he's used to my temper tantrums like this, he doesn't mind much.
"Like shit, they will. They know me well. They might as well kiss my ass," I say, speeding even more, but the Porsche doesn't support any speed after 110, as I've set it for safety precautions. Although I act recklessly from time to time, I keep it at a safe limit.
"River, I swear one day, if I die because of your short temper, I will come back and haunt you for the rest of your life. You better spare my life," Lucas says next to me. His eyes widen as we zoom past dozens of vehicles. And that's also when I hear the police siren.
I look through the side mirror and notice a police car behind us, a mini car with a red and blue light on top of it, with its siren blaring in my ears. I continue with my speed but slow down as the police car doesn't stop following us.
I thought they knew my number plate. Once they see it, they stop chasing after me.
Strange. It's not stopping today.
I slow down to an 80, and the police car overtakes us. I look to my right just as it drives past me and see an unfamiliar person in the driver's seat, but I cannot see him well as he overtakes my vehicle and stops in front of us, blocking my way.
I come to an abrupt stop with my boot slamming against the brakes. The police car door swings open, and an unfamiliar person walks out of it. Around six feet tall, his black hair combed back in a unique manner.
He moves toward us with a commanding stride, his uniform highlighting his well-defined physique and the shirt with the numerous badges perfectly hugging his body. As he stands next to my window, I notice his cold gaze. It makes my heart skip a beat, leaving me momentarily breathless as I pull down the window while secretly tossing a beer can from the front to the backseat.
Lucas looks at me with wide eyes, signalling with his eyes about the alcohol bottles in the backseat as well. Hopefully, the tinted windows won't show those empty bottles to the officer outside.
River LockhartI actually attend a university lecture in the evening. I mean, I don't usually do that because I am bored and I get the lecture notes from Lucas anyway. But today I attend as I feel like I have forgotten my lecturer's face for the time being. After the classes, I give Lucas a ride to his place, asking him to show up at my place with the other two while I shop for some snacks and drinks. I hit the convenience store to buy everything for the night.I do have some snacks at home, but those that my dad's secretary, Mr Turner(Lucas' father), brings are just not what I like. Even when I ask him to bring the ones I like, he mixes them up and then brings the wrong ones. Old man.I park my vehicle outside and walk into the convenience store, my usual spot where I make a stop whenever I need a snack. I notice the new store worker in the cashier's place. So she might not know that I am a regular here.I search through the aisles while listening to the old radio in the store.'Anot
River LockhartIt felt like a nudge to my heart. I quickly look at him, "What?""I do hate you for the things you do."" ""You are acting recklessly. I didn't know at first, but I heard from someone here that you have been excused like... a hundred times because of your father's reputation. And so did you expect me to do the same?" he asks."Uh.... that- well... you can say I've gotten used to it.""That makes you really unattractive. A person who takes no responsibility for his actions," he says."Okay then... what should I do to be attractive?""Follow the rules. Now fill out the form." he points again."You are boring." I groan before starting it again. I silently fill it out and hand it over to him. He keeps the form aside and then picks out a little recording device. He switches it ON and keeps it on the table between us.He looks at me and then motions me to start, "You can start describing what happened."I start explaining the situation that happened last night. I feel Office
River LockhartAfter the gender reveal party, I leave for the city police station to give my statement regarding last night's incident. The drive through the rush hour traffic exhausts me to the point I wonder if I can not go to give the statement. But I think otherwise.I have a hot police officer to impress. As I walk into the station, I notice all the familiar faces of those who are very loyal to my dad. And I hate them... as usual. One of them quickly comes to my side."Oh. What brought you here?" he questions."I was a witness to a crime incident last night. I came to give my statement." I let him know as I look around. "Where's Officer Damian? He's in charge of the case.""Well. Giving the statement is not needed. Your father has done much to me, and I don't want to bother you with such a trivial matter-""Trivial? You don't even know what happened. A girl got harassed last night. Is it trivial?"He quickly shakes his head, "It's not.""Yeah. Where's Officer Damian?"I hear foot
River LockhartI watch as Officer Damian drives away.He really hates me. But at the same time, he's concerned, too, although we are mere strangers to each other. Even last time, he let me go with just a fifty-dollar fine, and this time, he didn't even do anything about my presence in an adult bar.Well...I look down at my phone and quickly save the number that he has typed. I can't believe my night turned around and twisted like this. Whatever shit has happened since the call from that woman(Julia), I managed to get Officer Damian's number although I don't know what I am supposed to do with it.I can do plenty of things with this acquired power.I can give him a call. A booty call.Or I can send him a flirting message.Damn. What should I actually do with it??I send my hand through my hair and kick at the pebbles on the ground in frustration. I don't know how I am supposed to enter his inner circle anyway. I feel lost because he has a high wall around him and he keeps everything rea
Damian ReidRiver... Lockhart. What more am I supposed to expect from a brat who sped up to 100 miles on the road? And a brat who used his father's identity to escape the law? A brat who tried to throw his money at me, and finally, who was at a crime scene. But looking at the CCTV footage in front of me. It's a whole other incident.River comes in with another guy, but he only remains by the door while the other one acts aggressively. He even tries to stop the other guy from ruining the goods and harassing the store worker. The girl, now wearing a thick jacket around her body, replays the scene with a shaky hand. She looks dishevelled and scared after being harassed by a pervert. Before anything, I asked the girl to call the store owner as she required someone to take care of her. After asking her to kindly show the footage, she claimed that this brat right here was not responsible for anything.I didn't want to believe it, but here it is...I step back and fold my arms on my chest. T
River LockhartI walk out of the apartment complex and walk into the nearest bar to have a drink. I make a call to Lucas, but he doesn't answer.Assuming he might be doing something at the moment, I sit by the bar and take a few shots before someone sits next to me.I look at the stranger and notice that he looks my age."Alone tonight?" he asks as he looks through the menu of drinks, a sign that he's not a regular here."Yeah. What about you?" I ask."My girlfriend dumped me," he casually replies.I just nod at his words, but he starts telling me the whole story. I listen to him because I have nothing else to do. I watch the spots of light against the walls while I listen to him talk with a hint of exaggeration. It makes me wonder why he was with that girl in the first place. Because of the facts that he says, it seems like she was a complete bitch. Maybe I see him as the innocent one because I haven't heard the girl's point of view on this incident."Hah. Anyway. It's so boring. Sho
