Elena walked into her sister's ward in the hospital, her heart was racing and she had been jumpy since. Ever since she took the money from that strange man she was on an all-time high. She paid her landlord all her outstanding rent that day and then paid in full for her sister's bills, she still had enough left over to fix her beat-up car and pay off some part of her remaining debts.
"Ellie?" Her sister perked up from the bed the moment she stepped in."Emily," Elena always got emotional when she was in that room. It was a different kind of pain seeing her sister strapped to several tubes to keep her organs working.Emily was a shell of her former self, she was easily tired, her smile had weakened a long time ago, her full hair had now become a thing and short, her eyes were dull and she was a lot thinner; seeing her like that always made Elena tear up but she held it in till she was away from Emily."I was not expecting you, don't you get off work by seven?" Even her sick sister was aware of her bizarre work schedule."I did not take any extra shifts today, I came to spend the day with you." That made Emily smile for a moment but then her smile faded, "but the bills? I heard the doctors say they had to increase my medication, will we be able to afford it?" Elena walked up to her and sat on the bed."We will be just fine, Em. I have settled everything with the doctors so do not worry about that. Just focus on getting better for me." Elena took her hand and squeezed it gently. "I will get better, the doctors said they have not seen such an impressive growth in a matter of days. Do you think I will be out of here soon? I have gotten so used to the smell of antiseptics and cleaning agents that when I went outside for my weekly stroll I could not recognise the scent of fresh air." Emily meant it as a joke but the moment Elena's face changed she knew it did not sit well with her."Hey, I'm going to be better Ellie. It is just a matter of time," Emily sounded so hopeful it was hard not to believe her.Emily had always been the strong one in the family, she was the goofy glue that held them together. When their parents died in a fatal accident that left Emily in the health condition she was now, Emily still tried her best to put a smile on both their faces."I know, I know.""You're crying," Elena could not help it, any time she saw Emily she remembered their parents and she remembered the reason they got into that accident in the first place because she was being a brat."It is not your fault you know,""You did not have to come get me, I was an adult. I should have been responsible enough to not end up in that situation. And you have to pay for my decisions," Elena was bawling her eyes by now. She had tried her best not to cry in front of her sister but at that point, she could not help it, her emotions were taking a toll on her."I am not paying for your decisions, Elena. Everybody makes mistakes, I need you to forgive yourself for this one thing, please. Mom and Dad would want the same thing." They spent the next few minutes crying in each other's arms.Their life had taken a serious toll since the accident, Elena had to drop out of college to take care of Emily. She had to work multiple jobs at a time just to be able to afford their rent and her medical bills, she never had enough time to go back to school. She had always pushed it off till they were both back on their feet, literally and figuratively.Elena had made a promise to herself when she saw Emily being wheeled into the emergency room, she was always going to be there for her sister and she was going to provide for her, do whatever it takes to make it up to her was the mantra she chanted in her head every day.Elena and Emily spent the rest of the day cuddled in each other's arms, talking about their parents and their childhood, and memories they still held in their hearts. It felt nice being there with her sister, it made the entire world fade away to just the two of them. When it past visiting hours, Elena had to leave. She still had a lot of things to figure out, Emily's medical bills had been settled for now but she knew it would still pile up and she needed a new financial plan. But her problem was how to get a steady income to finance that plan.As she pondered in her head on her walk home she noticed a black car parked in front of her apartment building. She knew exactly who the car belonged to, she could not forget watching it drive off that evening. The owner of the car stepped out, dressed in a designer suit, the same type he had on the last time she saw him. He closed the car door and leaned on it, looking as effortlessly cool as ever."Are you busy?" He asked."What are you doing here?" She countered, ignoring his question. Elena slowly made her way towards him, like he would devour her if she walked too fast. To her, Marcus was too intimidating, and it was hard to know what he was thinking. She remembered her mother telling her that those were the most dangerous men to deal with. In her head, she nicknamed him Poker Face, but that would be a nickname only her and her brain would be aware of.Marcus sighed, he ran his hands through his messy hair. "You said I was a stranger. I wanted us to change that."Sitting directly opposite someone but being alone seemed to become Elena's life for the next few weeks. She had reluctantly gotten into a relationship with Marcus, and it was not because she was a gold digger or anything; even if sometimes she felt like that. It was because Marcus asked, he looked bored when he did.It happened one night, they had just gotten back from another terrible date where they ate in silence, and before he dropped her off he said, "Elena, will you go out with me?" He looked straight ahead like he could not care less about her answer."Like tomorrow?" She asked sheepishly, Elena was trying to avoid coming to terms with what she thought he was asking. She knew for a fact that he had felt the terrible vibe between them, and there was no space for a romantic pursuit but he had asked anyways…could he not see it?"Like date me. Be my girlfriend, officially." Elena could not tell if the fact he was not looking at her was because he was shy or nervous, but he did not
It was a late night. Elena had just finished her last shift and she was too energetic to go home. Marcus was busy with work, and it was way past Emily's visiting hours. Elena decided to just walk around the breezy city since she had no one else to spend the night with.It made her remember her college days before she dropped out. She was studying business administration at a college not too far from where she grew up but she was not exactly concentrated. She remembered being so young and stupid. She would skip classes a lot, get into trouble with authority and go out drinking or smoking on school nights. She was a smart girl, she had always managed to cover up some part of her syllables just enough to get a B in the exam and move on to the next year. Her parents had tried their best to make her some sense of responsibility but they were too far away to monitor her every move. She remembered Emily being so young, always looking up to her big sister that could do no wrong. No matter how
"So when I was a kid, I used to get this same ice cream combination every time and it drove my mom crazy, she always wanted me to try something new," Gavin said, a smile on his face as he recounted his experience to Elena, who just watched him gleefully."Same. My sister is the adventurous type, any time we went out for ice cream it was a new flavour and a new combo, she was always so ready to experiment but—""You just wanted to stick to a safer option, huh?" Gavin asked. Elena smiled and nodded. It was as if he could read her mind. "I know what that feels like. Maybe one day we should try something different," Elena cleared what was left of her ice cream and stared at Gavin."Maybe, I'm willing if you are," Gavin smirked. He reached for a napkin and reached over to clean a smudge off Elena's cheeks to her utmost surprise. She blushed in return."Sorry, sorry. You just looked too cute with ice cream on your cheeks," Elena laughed. "Are you always this flirty?""No, I'm kind of shy a
"I— I'm sorry but I can't." Gavin stopped in his tracks, recalculating his steps. He stepped back and cleared his throat awkwardly. "I'm sorry, I'm sorry. That was way too strong," he scratched the back of his neck, embarrassment engulfing him."I should not have. I think I'll leave." He turned to leave but she stopped him. "It's okay, I enjoyed today." "Me too, but I really should leave." Elena shrugged off his jacket and handed it to him. It was a lot bigger than her so it swallowed her. "Here," Gavin took his jacket and put it on."Thank you for tonight, and the jacket, " Elena said, trying to lighten the mood."I should be thanking you. It's been so long since I felt this normal,"Elena wanted to ask him what he meant but he had already begun walking off. Once more her thoughts drifted to Marcus and he had driven off that night after giving her a bundle of dollars. As she thought of it, her phone rang. It was Marcus. She was so shocked she watched it ring for a few seconds befor
"You have not given me an answer, Elena" Marcus said as he shifted closer to Elena, he tilted her chin up and made her look at him in his eyes."Is this not what you wanted?" Marcus asked, tilting his eyebrow."I—" Elena stuttered. She could not form words anymore. Her anger had died down in her throat and she was too confused to move. Was he going to kiss her? He had to be bluffing."If you're not comfortable enough then," his words sent shivers down her spine, his touch on her chin was the cause of the goosebumps on her skin. Why did he have such an effect on her? Why did she let him?Marcus shifted away without another word. He buckled his seat belt and continued driving, leaving Elena in awe. "Why— why did you do that?""Because you wanted me to? I'm sorry if I invaded your personal space but you complain a lot, and I thought if I gave you what you wanted then you would not complain anymore."Elena gaped at him. "I do not complain a lot."Marcus did not say anything in return he
"Excuse me?" Elena asked. The cafe suddenly felt hotter."You heard me," Isabel said, she maintained a predator look in her eyes but she still looked annoyed."I don't think I understand what you mean." Elena shifted in her seat, she was becoming uncomfortable by the moment and kept glancing towards the restrooms hoping Marcus would come out and end her misery."Why would he date you? You do not look like his type. Are you a model?" Elena shook her head, the intimidating stare Isabel gave her made her squirm in her seat."You are not a model, of course. You do not even look like one. So what is it that attracts him? You are not that beautiful, I mean, just look at your cheeks." Elena's hands instinctively went up to her face."Have you heard of the word diet?""Excuse me?" Elena asked, her cheeks heating up with anger and embarrassment."I'm not trying to be mean or anything it's just that there is nothing physically attractive about you." Isabel stood up, she seemed happy to have acc
"You don't like sushi, do you?" Marcus asked, noticing the sour look on Elena's face as she moved her food around."I hate to be ungrateful but the idea of raw fish freaks me out." Marcus's lips tilted up a little in a smile. "I guess that's on me, what would you like? I'll order something else. What about Chinese food?""I love Chinese food," "Give me a minute." He stood up and walked towards his landline to make a call while Elena sat back staring at the platter of food. She and Marcus had talked more throughout the day than in their entire relationship of weeks and it made her feel giddy. And now he was ordering Chinese food for her.Her mind immediately went back to Gavin. She was surprised she had not thought about him most of the day, last night felt like everything but today her mind was only on Marcus and their little moment in the car."Food will take thirty minutes," Marcus said once he came back. "I'll go put these in the freezer. Meanwhile you can pick out a movie or some
Brunch was tense and uncomfortable. You could feel the tension weighing on them both as the sounds of cutlery making contact with plates came into play."So, your sister. How is she?""She is doing well. Her surgery is in two weeks so we're just hopeful.""Hopeful?" Marcus asked with confusion all over his face."This is going to be her third one this year. It's all the same I guess, we're just hoping that she's lucky and gets back on her feet after this one." "I'm sorry to hear that," Elena nodded. She didn't have anything to say, she was just trying desperately to get out of her headspace and the voices that were taunting her."Are you okay?" Marcus asked, his blank stare scanning her face. That question was the final straw, it almost broke her. At that moment she could have started shedding tears but she didn't."I think I should go, Marcus.""Oh." She stood up abruptly and almost bumped down the table. "I'm sorry,""Do you need a ride?""I'll manage." She murmured and made her w
