It was a late night. Elena had just finished her last shift and she was too energetic to go home. Marcus was busy with work, and it was way past Emily's visiting hours. Elena decided to just walk around the breezy city since she had no one else to spend the night with.
It made her remember her college days before she dropped out. She was studying business administration at a college not too far from where she grew up but she was not exactly concentrated. She remembered being so young and stupid. She would skip classes a lot, get into trouble with authority and go out drinking or smoking on school nights. She was a smart girl, she had always managed to cover up some part of her syllables just enough to get a B in the exam and move on to the next year. Her parents had tried their best to make her some sense of responsibility but they were too far away to monitor her every move. She remembered Emily being so young, always looking up to her big sister that could do no wrong. No matter how much she tried her mind always brought her back to that night, the night everything went south.Elena never took in alcohol again.Deciding to let go of her mounting thoughts, she entered an ice cream parlour not so far away from heworkplacece. She had been wanting to try it out for a while but she never did because she had no one to go with, she once tried to summon the courage to ask Marcus to take her but when he looked at her, his intimidating eyes in place, she shut up.Ice cream was her safe space. When she was trying to get over her drinking habits, she always resorted to ice cream. Her teeth paid the price but she had been sober ever since. The place was lively for that time of the night, the bright lighting and interior designs temporarily blinded her for a moment before her eyes adjusted to it. Children were squealing and running around the place, clearly high on sugar and the exhausted parents just watched, too tired to do anything. The parents had gathered at one table and some seemed to be drinking coffee, while others were eating coffee ice cream instead.Elena made her way to the ice cream display, her mouth watering just looking at the flavours. Granted, ice cream was her weak spot she was surprised she had managed to stay away from it for so long. Being in debt destroyed her cravings."What would you like?""Peanut butter ice cream with cake batter and some fu—" Elena stopped midway when she noticed someone was saying the same thing at the same time. She turned in surprise to the man standing behind her, he had an embarrassed look on his face, "I'm so sorry, I thought you were still scanning." He said apologetically.Elena agrees him a warm smile in return, "It's okay, I've just not seen someone with the same taste in ice cream as mine.""Really? Peanut butter ice cream with cake batter and fudge? With Oreos—""Oh, my God!" Elena exclaimed with a light laugh. "That is my exact order,"The man smiled back at her, "What are the odds huh?""One in a million," Elena replied, a smile not leaving her face as she studied this man. He was towering over her, not as tall as Marcus but he was still tall. He had dark curly hair that looked like a mess on his head, and hypnotising blue eyes she could get lost in it. He had a full goatee going on, unlike the stubble Marus had going on. It made him look more mature, even if they appeared to be the same age."So, would you two like to order? We have a line going on here." The employee told them, trying to sound polite but the annoyed look on his face gave him in."Yes, uh— two peanut butter ice cream with cake batter, fudge and Oreos." The employee prepared their orders while they stood beside each other in comfortable silence.Elena could not help but compare the peace she felt with this man she just met to the tension she felt around her boyfriend. When their orders were ready, Elena reached into her purse but the man stopped her, "It's on me," he said and then proceeded to hand in his card. "It's not every day you see someone with exceptional taste in ice cream," he continued with a small smirk."Do you want to get a seat together?" He asked her once he had finished paying. "Um, yeah. Sure."He led her to an empty table at the furthest end of the ice cream parlour away from the screaming children. "So, my name is Gavin.""Elena," They sat down together and quietly enjoyed their ice cream. "This is so good," Elena said not able to suppress the groan of pleasure that left her mouth."It is. I haven't had ice cream in a long time,""Oh my God, me too!" Elena was so excited to have someone she hated a few things with. She did not have many friends after leaving college, and she and Elena had conflicting interests in things; Elena did not like ice cream.Gavin chuckled at her excited response. "I have just been so busy with work and everything I decided to treat myself today. I'm happy I did,""Yeah, the ice cream in this place is the best.""Yes, but mostly because I would not have met you, a one in a million."Elena could have been wrong but she thought she felt goosebumps on get skin. She tried to play it cool and suppress her blush but she was already smiling like an idiot. She did not know why but this man's voice carried so much power over her, in a different way than Marcus's voice. When they both reached for napkins at the same time and their fingers brushed against each other's, she felt electric jolts in her body, it was then she knew she was a goner."So when I was a kid, I used to get this same ice cream combination every time and it drove my mom crazy, she always wanted me to try something new," Gavin said, a smile on his face as he recounted his experience to Elena, who just watched him gleefully."Same. My sister is the adventurous type, any time we went out for ice cream it was a new flavour and a new combo, she was always so ready to experiment but—""You just wanted to stick to a safer option, huh?" Gavin asked. Elena smiled and nodded. It was as if he could read her mind. "I know what that feels like. Maybe one day we should try something different," Elena cleared what was left of her ice cream and stared at Gavin."Maybe, I'm willing if you are," Gavin smirked. He reached for a napkin and reached over to clean a smudge off Elena's cheeks to her utmost surprise. She blushed in return."Sorry, sorry. You just looked too cute with ice cream on your cheeks," Elena laughed. "Are you always this flirty?""No, I'm kind of shy a
"I— I'm sorry but I can't." Gavin stopped in his tracks, recalculating his steps. He stepped back and cleared his throat awkwardly. "I'm sorry, I'm sorry. That was way too strong," he scratched the back of his neck, embarrassment engulfing him."I should not have. I think I'll leave." He turned to leave but she stopped him. "It's okay, I enjoyed today." "Me too, but I really should leave." Elena shrugged off his jacket and handed it to him. It was a lot bigger than her so it swallowed her. "Here," Gavin took his jacket and put it on."Thank you for tonight, and the jacket, " Elena said, trying to lighten the mood."I should be thanking you. It's been so long since I felt this normal,"Elena wanted to ask him what he meant but he had already begun walking off. Once more her thoughts drifted to Marcus and he had driven off that night after giving her a bundle of dollars. As she thought of it, her phone rang. It was Marcus. She was so shocked she watched it ring for a few seconds befor
"You have not given me an answer, Elena" Marcus said as he shifted closer to Elena, he tilted her chin up and made her look at him in his eyes."Is this not what you wanted?" Marcus asked, tilting his eyebrow."I—" Elena stuttered. She could not form words anymore. Her anger had died down in her throat and she was too confused to move. Was he going to kiss her? He had to be bluffing."If you're not comfortable enough then," his words sent shivers down her spine, his touch on her chin was the cause of the goosebumps on her skin. Why did he have such an effect on her? Why did she let him?Marcus shifted away without another word. He buckled his seat belt and continued driving, leaving Elena in awe. "Why— why did you do that?""Because you wanted me to? I'm sorry if I invaded your personal space but you complain a lot, and I thought if I gave you what you wanted then you would not complain anymore."Elena gaped at him. "I do not complain a lot."Marcus did not say anything in return he
"Excuse me?" Elena asked. The cafe suddenly felt hotter."You heard me," Isabel said, she maintained a predator look in her eyes but she still looked annoyed."I don't think I understand what you mean." Elena shifted in her seat, she was becoming uncomfortable by the moment and kept glancing towards the restrooms hoping Marcus would come out and end her misery."Why would he date you? You do not look like his type. Are you a model?" Elena shook her head, the intimidating stare Isabel gave her made her squirm in her seat."You are not a model, of course. You do not even look like one. So what is it that attracts him? You are not that beautiful, I mean, just look at your cheeks." Elena's hands instinctively went up to her face."Have you heard of the word diet?""Excuse me?" Elena asked, her cheeks heating up with anger and embarrassment."I'm not trying to be mean or anything it's just that there is nothing physically attractive about you." Isabel stood up, she seemed happy to have acc
"You don't like sushi, do you?" Marcus asked, noticing the sour look on Elena's face as she moved her food around."I hate to be ungrateful but the idea of raw fish freaks me out." Marcus's lips tilted up a little in a smile. "I guess that's on me, what would you like? I'll order something else. What about Chinese food?""I love Chinese food," "Give me a minute." He stood up and walked towards his landline to make a call while Elena sat back staring at the platter of food. She and Marcus had talked more throughout the day than in their entire relationship of weeks and it made her feel giddy. And now he was ordering Chinese food for her.Her mind immediately went back to Gavin. She was surprised she had not thought about him most of the day, last night felt like everything but today her mind was only on Marcus and their little moment in the car."Food will take thirty minutes," Marcus said once he came back. "I'll go put these in the freezer. Meanwhile you can pick out a movie or some
Brunch was tense and uncomfortable. You could feel the tension weighing on them both as the sounds of cutlery making contact with plates came into play."So, your sister. How is she?""She is doing well. Her surgery is in two weeks so we're just hopeful.""Hopeful?" Marcus asked with confusion all over his face."This is going to be her third one this year. It's all the same I guess, we're just hoping that she's lucky and gets back on her feet after this one." "I'm sorry to hear that," Elena nodded. She didn't have anything to say, she was just trying desperately to get out of her headspace and the voices that were taunting her."Are you okay?" Marcus asked, his blank stare scanning her face. That question was the final straw, it almost broke her. At that moment she could have started shedding tears but she didn't."I think I should go, Marcus.""Oh." She stood up abruptly and almost bumped down the table. "I'm sorry,""Do you need a ride?""I'll manage." She murmured and made her w
"Sorry my apartment is a bit cramped and not appealing," Elena blushed with embarrassment as Gavin's tall frame walked into her home."No worries. My mom and I had almost the same kind when we were living together," Gavin was wearing a light blue shirt that hugged his body and exposed all his muscles and a pair of black jeans, he held a tub of coffee ice cream in one hand and an assortment of cookies and chocolates in the other. He carefully set it down on the centre table and smiled down at her."Before she got married to your stepdad?" "Yeah, she was just a single mother trying to make ends meet with her seven-year-old." Gavin reminisced about the old days, eating cold leftovers in the dark while his mother cried to the electricity company. "Uh, no offense to your home, it's not like I see you as a struggling single mother, which again would be fine. I'm a feminist," once the words left his mouth, he face-palmed himself.Elena burst out laughing at this, his facial expression was e
Marcus had been strained with work. His company was not making as much money as it used to and his father was on his neck; always criticizing every decision he made and silently judging him with his eyes.Marcus had never been a people pleaser but for his father, he would bend heaven and earth to receive a look of approval, it was that bad.A soft knock on the door interrupted his thoughts, he had been lost in them for a few days now, and it distracted him."Come in," Isabel walked into the large office. She had started dressing more suggestively ever since the coffee incident. That day she spotted a black camisole and a very short skirt, the suit jacket she had matched it with was long gone."Yes, Isabel?" Marcus raked his eyes down her very exposed body but immediately shifted them to his computer. Isabel smirked, a look of accomplishment on her face as she shut the door and strutted towards his table."Here are the files you requested earlier concerning the Singapore deal." She sai
